still haven't decide which uni to choose......Kings or LSOP?....i mean, yeh, Kings may have a better reputation, but according to the lastest uni The Times uni league table, (in pharmacy) Kings is 17th whereas LSOP is 10th....and LSOP has always been above Kings in Pharmacy...........if ur talking which uni has a better reputation on their Pharmacy dept, i'd say LSOP...and when ur employed by companies, im sure they'll know which uni's pharmacy results is better anyway...i don't think they just look at the uni's reputation on the whole, otherwise it would be so unfair to LSOP since it is a small institude that specialises in teaching Pharmacy......wot do u think of my view ppl???
(since a lot of ppl say they'd go for Kings cos of its reputation, i think this may let u have a fairer view rather than judging it only from wot u've heard)

anyone went to LSOP open day today? how d'you find it?

..........so no one know anything bout LSOP's bursary or any kind of financial help it offers then???
hey robusty,

i'm a first year pharmacy student at king's. haven't seen the school of pharmacy but heard it's a rather small building that reminds people of college rather than university. they also say that a lot of people go there because king's rejected them.
there also seem to be differences in what they cover in the course. overall i heard they have less to do than we do at king's. :p:
so... if you prefer to have an easier course go to LSOP.

as for the reputation... may be it is higher in the league table. but based on what criterias? and it also depends on which tables you look.
so, i wouldn't worry too much about the reputation. these league tables might look compelety different by the time you graduate.

i would go to both unis and have a look where you feel more comfortable!

there are also threads about this topic in the "pharmacy & pharmacology" section.

good luck.

I was there today. It was a lot better than the Kings open day but the atmosphere of the university didn't appeal to me. The facilities for pharmacy were great but everything that wasn't to do with pharmacy was below par.
We were given a information pack which contained some useful stuff, from an example timetable to info on bursaries. Haven't read through it yet.

o great Harleen,

can u tell me some info on the bursary? i couldn't find anything on their web site, nor did they tell me anything useful on the phone....

Thanks:wink:

hi Lauren_benz,

i agree with the reputation and the league table bit..it goes up and down every year...where did u get the piece of info that LSOP has less work then Kings? ok, if its true, i'm under an impression that ur saying LSOP is a 'college' for lazy ppl.........conversly, in other threads bout Pharmacy, students from LSOP compared their course with their friends who studied in Kings and said that they regret going to LSOP cos Kings Pharmacy course had less work to do...However, I don't think it is the matter of how much more or less work u do as long as the course content is sufficient and appropriate.......and yes, i'll be going to Kings and LSOP next Monday to take a self guild tour around (for the second time).....thx for ur views anyway Lauren_benz....although its not surprising I found them quite biased when u sed ur from Kings....

offer from LSOP:BBB
offer from Kings: BBb (AS biology)

I seriously don't think that we do less than Kings. Trust me, I talk to them and I find out that they haven't done what we did. I think we even do more sterile products than them. Also, we also get the oppurtunity to make make medicines such as creams, solutions, lotions. Some topics may be different, but in the end, there is basically the same amount of content I guess as otherwise it wouldn't qualify as an MPharm degree.
Don't say stuff like saying that the course at LSOP is easier without proof or experience, as it doesn't carry much weight in the argument!

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I was pretty annoyed at as Robusty said, making us sound like lazy people and a bit 2nd class.
hey robusty,

some friends in the course at king's also know a few people in the course at LSOP and then they often discuss what they have to do, and so it seems that we have a bigger workload with lab reports each week etc. i think they also do more anatomy and physiology in the first year than we do.
but you're right... i don't really know.

if you want to i could show you round sometime. may be that's more interesting... i could also find out about someone at LSOP. if that would help.
hi xenon!

of course i don't mean to say you're lazy or anything! i just said what i have heard. and i'm sure it's true what you say about the MPharm. after four years we're probably all on about the same level.

we also make up creams, solutions, mixtures on one afternoon every two weeks. nothing sterile so far.

Cool. I thought that that was a wicked part of the course. We spent 4 hours every 2 weeks and those hours flew by! It's cool, don't worry. Yeah, we probably will all reach the same level. I mean, one of the main parts of the MPharm is to do a project (which I am doing this year-half do it in winter), and all unis do that...

If you do want a personal guided tour of LSOP, like Lauren said of Kings, I would be happy to show you around when I am free.

hi,

I have went round to Kings and LSOP today (for the second time)....when i was in Kings, i went up to the 5th floor in the recpetion room and Dr Howells came in and had a chat ......then went to LSOP...i have to say, after 2 weeks of serious think and consideration, i'm going for ................LSOP!!!!!

PPl in LSOP are friendly, it has a better community , in my opinion...ppl who went there in the open day kept on saying the canteen was very small and crappy....but if u visit there on a normal day, its full of ppl and full of live!!! i can see myself there chatting to friends, getting to know new ppl in the next table...discussing things taught today and all the rest of it!! When i was waiting the the lift, a mature student and a girl in 3rd year were there talking, i had a chat wiv them and found out more bout LSOP...if ur in LSOp, u're not a statistic but a person, a student that teachers can get to know ur name rather than ur candidate no. Went into this lab on the 2nd floor and this guy called Kenny, in his 2nd year, chatted to me and gave me some insight... overall, i really like LSOP, its HUGE compared to the pharmacy in Kings, which only consists of one floor (5th floor with all the labs.....just a corridor and looked boring) and 2 more floors of classrooms........i have to say: Kings is newer, but LSOP is a place where people can find live when studying pharmacy and i really liked it!! Xenon, were u there today? if u saw me, i was wondering round the place with my parents (how embarassing) who insisted to come with me:rolleyes:
LOL hope it wasn't Sian Howells that put you off!

Robusty - thank you for your account on LSOP, i really appreciated it. Can I just ask though, what is the 'social life' like in LSOP? From what I have read, it does not seem to have that much to do!

the social life?? well, if u r talking bout having a place to chat wiv friends and chat wiv ppl from a higher year, then LSOP has that kind of place!! i think u need to be more specific on ur question tho...if ur talking bout whether theres a disco or anything like that, then i dun think there is.....the interior of Kings is all steel and glass, giving me a cold feeling...its old in LSOP, a bit like a maze in the bottom floor but i thnk i can get use to that (my secondary school is even more confusing since it was HUGE)..maybe there are some secret passages that i can find.... i say again, i like LSOP very much, but thats only my personal opinion, i talked to ppl there who also got an offer from Kings but they chose LSOP....didn't get the chance to chat to ppl in Kings tho, since it was in the morning and most ppl are in their classroom...but there must be a reason y ppl go to Kings instead of LSOP and vice versa, and for me, i've gone for LSOP rather than Kings cos i can 'feel' myself there. You can't decide like this by reading these forums, u hav to go there urself to look around...and, again, i went to both uni TWICE for the same purpose and now i've made my choice.

btw, i've found out bout bursay in LSOP, its 500 pounds if u receive the full 2.7k maintance grant + another 500 pounds (the maximum) if u got A in alevel Chemistry and an A in alevel Maths Or Physics OR Biology.........i've got an A in maths already.....now i need to get an A in Chemistry!!! im bordering between an A and a B atm........

Hope this helps anyone who were also not sure which uni to pick.

o yeh, ppl organise society round the college...the one that caught my eyes was the one on football and badminton (my favourite sports!) so if thats wot u mean by 'social life' then yeh, u can do things in ur spare time, usually on Wednesdays and Saturday (but dont forget ur here to study as well!!)
