Maths at Edinburgh

Hiya, Ive applied for the Maths (Bsc, G100) for entry this September, I am visiting the university for the open day in March. I was just wondering if any current students could give their opinion of the course. Is there options available to take in Chemistry or Physics in the first year of the course? How many hours work a week do you find yourself doing? Have many students previously studied further maths? Also in the university generally; Is there a mix of background of students or are the majority of Students Scottish? I am really looking forward to visiting, appreciate any replys, thanks!

Hey, I don't do maths but I know you'll get the option to do outside courses such as physics and I also know maths is bloody hard, you've really gotta like maths. As for further maths I think it really helps. I do engineering thus have to do 'easy' maths and thats hard enough for me! (altho 1st semester was actually really quite easy)

My flatmate is in 1st year maths, he's doing it with lots of funny philosophy options... so I'm sure chem and physics will be possible.. but possibly not both. Think he's done f maths.

Another friend who's doing maths said the 1st semester was fairly straight forward, but the second semester is getting harder... but she didn't do f. maths at school.

As for scottish students... there's a fair number, but they're probably not the majority. generally i mean, not for maths.

I'm doing Maths as my outside and it's alright-ish. I didn't do Further Maths, but a fair few have. It isn't vital though, the first semester is basically A Level revision and the second semester is a little more challenging.

Providing you're committed, you should be fine.

You should be able to combine it with all sorts, logic, economics, politics, philosophy...... lots!

It's really good, but I'd advise you to keep on top of it. For someone like myself that has only done as far as P3 in Maths the new ideas keep coming, so prepare to work (unless you've done Matrices et al before in which case, still work!)

Assignments are every week and they can be quite difficult. Fortunately, the exams are easy (10 questions equally weighted - 10 marks for proving differentiation by first principles -pfft!).

Anyways, I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, just ask!

Steerz if your doing maths as your outside your not doing maths maths! Your doing non specialist maths (mm1/2 and am1/2 I presume), specialist maths is much tougher from what I hear.

Nope. I'm doing specialist maths (Practical Calculus & Solving Equations in Semester 1 and Geometry & Convergence and Group Theory : An Introduction To Abstract mathematics in Semester 2).

There are 2 other specialist Maths courses in semester 2 that people who have chosen Maths as their degree do too.

My DOS said that the non-specialist Maths wasn't worth my time.
