Re: Student Accommodation in Newcastle(Original post by weirdwakkidolli)
I was actually thinking Encounters in World History and Aspects of British History... I take it you did E+A and Americas?
First year history is quite frankly a bit ****.
The Aspects of British History and History the Americas are very interesting, as is Themes in European History.
Encounters in World History and Varieties in History are complete rubbish, and I honestly feel they just put them in there to try and justify our tuition fees. By the end of the semesters no one was turning up to these lectures, and the content of the lectures doesn't even have anything to do with the assignments you get.
I enjoyed Evidence and Argument but it largely depends on who your seminar leader is and what topic you are doing (I got a really good seminar leader and I found the French Revolution very interesting).
Second year history looks a lot better as you can actually pick what modules you want to do. Saying that, I was slightly disappointed with first year History and I am going to be doing History and Politics for my second year. -
Re: Student Accommodation in NewcastleAah, Scott Ashley is lovely, I have him for British. Dr Guegan, well, he's difficult to avoid in semester 2 as he does Varieties of History and Themes in European History, so if you really want him you know where to find him(Original post by weirdwakkidolli)
See it sounded really broad, which I liked, but then I suppose that would be hard because there's so much to look at when doing something like that.
And the module leader is Dr Scott Ashley. This ones 100% final examination at the end of semester 2 so I suppose that's a bit better. I don't know how I feel about exams still haha The French, fit gay guy sounds cool though haha I kind of hope I do have him now haha

Re: Student Accommodation in Newcastle
Just done my application now:
En-Suite:
Option A: Castle Court
Option B: Windsor Terrace
Option C:
Washbasin:
Option A: Marris House
Option B: St Mary's College
Option C: Windsor Terrace
Kind of hoping for Marris House if I can't get en-suite but I'll be happy with St Mary's!
Can't wait now, just need exam season to be over!

Re: Student Accommodation in NewcastleWell, because I'm going to be doing Combined Honours, I only need two... right now I'm thinking Aspects of British History and this new World Empires thing I just found on the website haha(Original post by Azog 150)

Was it just that you found the modules uninteresting? I often find that I need to like the people teaching me before I get into the subject... So I always hope I have good seminar leaders and stuff because otherwise I get bored.
I suppose it will all be fine though
I'm glad I'm not doing straight history though
Haha choosing my modules based purely on the fact I know the lecturer is a good-looking french guy may not be the best policy haha but if he's just casually part of a module I want to take... bonus haha(Original post by Molokai)

Re: Student Accommodation in NewcastleTRue, which is why i also applied to castle court, same reasoning(Original post by Nagillum)
Yeah it looks like you have most of the social aspects of Ricky Road but can relax if you want to

Encounters in world History was just far too broad a subject. As a result the lectures came across as very haphazard and disjointed. Not to mention that the lectures, while some of them were interesting, bore practically no relevance to the assignments where you basically have to do all the research from scratch. The seminar structure was also a mess.
As for Varieties in History, the topic is just boring as hell. Its basically about Historical theory and the 'History of History' and that sort of thing. Some of it was interesting at times (but mostly it really wasn't), but again the lectures seemed very disjointed and they bear little to no relevance to the assignments.
The other topics are a bit more focused and hence easier to follow and generally more interesting as you learn fewer things in greater detail, rather then loads of things in practically no detail.
Second year should be better as you get to specify certain topics you want to do.
Aspects of British History is good. We didn't get the choice of doing 'World Empires' although I imagine that is probably replacing 'Encounters in World History' which I hear is getting dropped. History of the Americas is also very interesting and worth picking. -
Re: Student Accommodation in NewcastleA few people I know who had it as their insurance ended up at Henderson and St Mary's. But I imagine Leazes or Richardson road is just as likely.(Original post by Logi)
Anyone know what kind of accommodation you're likely to be put in if you select Newcastle as your insurance please? -
Re: Student Accommodation in NewcastleThanks for the help. Ended up firming in the end but helpful response none the less(Original post by RTom)

I read that as well but just found this -(Original post by Kat.Tales)
Was just wondering Castle Court says no overnight visitors... are they really strict with this does anyone know?? Was just wondering for a friend staying after a night out rather than get a taxi
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/accommodation/c...nightguest.htm
And then if you click on the booking form it asks for the room number and it says to put a prefix on depending on where you are and says to put CC for Castle Court? So I would assume its ok? Not sure if maybe the rules have changed or anything like that? -
Re: Student Accommodation in NewcastleNot quite but close, Flat 31A(Original post by Steerforth)
Room 5 Flat 34A, Marris House
Any future flatmates stalking this thread?

Re: Student Accommodation in NewcastleI stayed in Ricky Road and they were soooooo lax with this. Then again, it was bigger. Unless there are staff constantly there, it's unlikely they'll catch you.(Original post by Kat.Tales)

Re: Student Accommodation in Newcastle(Original post by Beth1793)
Just firmed and applied for accomodation!
1) St Mary's
2) Marris
3) Windsor
really love the look of St Mary's, and really didn't care about ensuite at all! Just hope it's a sociable as it seems to be- the brochure said it was perfect for a great social experience- is this true?
really excited now!
What places did you end up with, how early did you apply(Original post by Azog 150)
Marris House is definitely the best one. Its right next to Ricky Road so you get the social aspect, but its much nicer with two toilets and two showers between 6 people (as opposed to one in Ricky Road) and of course a television and generally much nicer kitchen/living room area. Each room also gets a wash basin which is really handy. There is also a really nice community vibe at Marris House. Pretty much everyone I know from other accommodations has said they wish they lived in Marris. And to top it all off, its not even that much more expensive then Ricky Road and its much less expensive them some of the other accommodations.
