Am I the only one that gets annoyed......

When you whole class takes a mock test. For the first Unit of the AS course, and they all fail. I dont claim to be some sort of genius. But I find it really annoying when we do a test, that is meant to be very easy, and I get very high marks, whilst everyone else gets low marks.

I just find it frustrating having to retake test, or go slow just because the otheer 90% of the class doesnt bother to revise and fails. :L .....

Does anyone else feel this way about their classes?

A lot of people genuinely don't understand . It would be annoying say if we didn't get time to cover everything but normally it helps to go over stuff again with the rest of the class seeing as everything is taught ridiculously fast compared to GCSE.
but yeh i kinda agree i don't like accommodating people who don't try at all and consequently fail everything.

its not being a P****
Its very annoying when you are the only one in your class that tries. And when it comes to test, being the only one to do when. But then having to re-do tests and going back to things, just because everyone else cba to put some effort in. Im not calling these people dumb. They're are very smart, cos in class the seem to get everything, even better than me.

But its annoying to just seem them fail- sigh i feel like a teacher.

This is so true.

No I went to a grammar school, everyone was clever.
I also did the bio, chem and maths for A2, very few people at my school took them for the sake of it, and most were good at it too.

Maybe they're busy socialising like normal teenagers/working/ill/have personal issues/struggle academically so depsite revising still fail or simply have realised mocks aren't the end of the world.

I got a U on my maths mock and 90% in the exam. I'm thinking getting the best marks in the class won't help you in the real world if you can't understand that not everyone is the same as you, others may struggle so the teacher can't just go at your pace.

QUESTION: Are you streamed? Or at a selective school? Before going to a grammar school I found maths too slow at primary school, so I can get where you're coming a tiny bit, then again I was 9 and a huge geek.

streamed. :/ - I can appreciate that not everyone would get everything right away. Thats not the problem. I also dont mind it if they get a poor grade because they genuinely do not understand.

What gets me is when I see people who are clearly capable, do bad because they cant be asked. Especially when they dont care that they got a poor grade. And it does usually mean, having to revisit things and do retakes, when we could be advancing a head, its not like we have a lot of time. Considering we are meant to be doing a full A-level in a year.

They just don't try, or care for that matter, that it's not the real exam. That's beside the point for me as I'd rather see how well I do and work from there. It doesn't annoy me because they can do what they like, it does annoy me, however, when they made fun of people who do try hard and try to bring them down (this was apparent in the lower school). Thankfully now my sixth form kicks anyone out who doesn't work.

i do understand where you're coming from here, even if you do sound a little immodest.

i did a-level biology and it was VERY annoying when we had to spend 2 weeks on one topic that i'd got in 5 mins. some people failed because they really didn't get it - i understand that. but most people failed because they couldn't be bothered. they would spend most of the lesson complaining. I'd sit at the back and be bored out of my mind. i learned quickly not to answer any questions because i got teased mercilessly for it. (yes, in a class of 17 year olds). luckily i had teachers who gave me lots of extra work and would give me interesting sessions out of lessons. i then got an A* in biology. so all the people that didn't bother didn't ruin my life as i decided to spend my time wisely and my teachers let me read articles/do extra work/ read other biology books while they were explaining things to the rest of the class.
maybe you should ask your teachers to give you extra work - it is their duty to do the best for every student, not just the ones who are taking up their attention.

what you need to do is read the book. when you're bored and fed up, read ahead and it will pay off in the end when you do really well in your exam.

although remember this:

unless you got 100% in every test, you'll still benefit from re-doing it. and even when you do get 100%, you can still improve your answers by making them more concise and thinking of other possible answers.

No... I think you're bigging youself up a bit, some practice isn't gonna do any harm, is it?

Yeah our sixth form is nicer than yours xD. I do wish they would try though, it doesnt help anyone. Especially teachers- it sends the wrong message. If no one will bother with mocks, whats the point in having them....But if they assume that people are trying....it just sets the class progress back. Since they teachers have already planned lessons for the whole year. So when it comes to exam periods, we end up rushing and having to cramp, 2 lessons into one etc.

I think it would be better, if they had the retakes after school. That way, class progress is not slowed down and its a bit of an incentive for the lazy students to try, if they dont wanna be heard back for an extra 90mins after school to do the test.

thats good advice thanks. Ill use the time to read ahead and what not. You make a good point too about re-doing. thank you.

1) If I was you I'd read ahead myself and start my revision extra early, maybe even ask for extra work.
2) I did badly at AS because of a lack of confidence, I had to improve my grades in maths and chemistry by 2 grades during year 13, it was really tough. Other people may have similar problems.
3) You're streamed but do you feel you are you in a high enough set?
4) They may actually try, and just pretend that they're not, the majority of people in my 6th form seemed to have this attitude.
5) Not everyone is ambitious at this age, it's actually relatively rare, it might not have hit them that exams are important, or exams just aren't the be all and end all for them (they're not imho).

I already said in my OP that i dont claim to be some kind of genius, nor did I call my classmates stupid or anything along those lines. Its their disregard for their education and lazyness that annoys me. Because it means that the progression of the course is being slowed down.

I think i will start reading a head and asking for extra work.

Its not possible to move sets. As far as im aware the AS classes are set up so you have a high and low class. As far as I know anyway. I also cant move it another class because we only have on class for the subject I'm talking about. Its only the class for this subject that I do not like.

Ok fair enough but I really think you need to get your head around the idea that not everyone thinks like you. Most teenagers don't, if anything you're "abnormal", you have to learn that you live amongst tons of other people and your teachers have to ensure that those who are struggling, can keep up, even if they are just plain lazy.

Trust me, you'd feel far worse if you were at the bottom of your class!

Just hack it for this year, it'll be over soon and thanks to reading ahead/around the subject you should hopefully get a fantastic grade.
