There are students like that everywhere I would imagine. We get quite competitive but all in good sport and as far as I know.... Lots of boys, not many girls.

ahan.so what is the employment rate for the graduates?specially the mechanical graduates? do they plan to go overseas e.g countries like Germany,USA,China for jobs.

what is your call on the professors.

Hi there! Just wondering... What are the most fun halls outside of Fallowfield? I've been doing some research and I think that Fallowfield is just a little too far for me, and among other reasons, just isn't what I'm looking for. Any advice?

Here's my take on the Victoria Park campus area:

- St Anselm's hall is quite lively, but it all male.
- Don't really hear much from Dalton-Ellis.
- St Gabriel's Hall is alright, but their socials are awful.
- Hulme is okay, but very much keep to themselves.
- Canterbury Court is pretty good.
- Pankhurst Court seems alright, never really been in there though.

Don't know about city, but St Anselm's Hall is certainly the liveliest in the Victoria Park area - if you get over the fact it's all male.

There is research out there dedicated to this (i.e. UNISTATS).

It is generally unwise to do that. Better to work in your native country or the UK for a couple of years and then think about international travel/assignment/reallocation once you've established yourself.

Depends on my relationship with them. I call my PDEs lecturer Tony, whereas I call my real analysis lecturer Dr. Coleman.

I hope that helps.

I believe they are quite high. Have a look on unistats or something like that.

ah right did you mind that it was so close to home ?

Well I had an offer from Manchester, Leeds and SOAS. And basically, I decided that I would choose Manchester if I didn't live nearby, so that shouldn't be a factor in the decision.
because until i got my offer I was dead set against going to manchester but I'm kind of reconsidering because it is a really good university. and yeah I'm definitely going to pick to be in halls don't fancy being the fresher loner hahaa ! did you like it there ? and was it easy to make friends ? also was it catered or self catered ? sorry for all the questions :P

I really like my halls. I have a friend who's flat has been called to talk to the warden because their parties were too loud, and it can be a bit annoying when you have to defend your right to have loud music playing at 11.30pm on a friday because some foreign student is sleeping or something, but that doesnt happen very often at all! But there is a good social committee (I was on it but I dropped out) and it was easy to make friends. I kind of stopped going out after about November, and so I dont socialise as much with people from halls now - but I see on facebook that there are at least three really tight knit groups of friends in my block alone.

do you prefer it to richmond ?

Well VH was my second choice, after Richmond. I wanted to be in Fallowfield and I wanted there to be a bar specifically for my halls. Also Richmond is a little cheaper. But, my room is massive, the staff around the place are friendly, and it's a 10 minute walk (max) from South Campus. If your course is based in North Campus there is a bus (147) which leaves from outside VH and is £1.50 a day, unless you walk down to the SU on Oxford Road and catch it from there - with a UoM student card it's free from UMSU to Sackville Street. (That's Uni. Manchester Student's Union and Sackville Street is where North Campus is)

well thank you for telling me a bit about richmond and victoria it all helps  hahaa true what course are you studying ?

Glad I could help! I do Middle Eastern Studies, what are you thinking of?

I know the feeling ! and hahaa okay well thanks for all your help. And I like the sound of a 24 hour library as nerdy as it may sound is that far from a lot of the accomodation ?

The library is behind the union building, in the middle of the main campus. However there are smaller, specialist libraries for some subjects. And it's only open 24hrs during exam period :'( BUT there will be a new "learning commons" on South Campus from September, and that will be open 24hrs all year round. Which is fab, because I work best after midnight, but not from home.

Sorry for the mission of a reply!

Oh no. That means most of the good ones will be taken up already by then right? Which is a better one, a catered or a non-catered hall?

Self catered, without a shadow of a doubt. And I don't know, I mean someone dropped out of my flat before the end of freshers week, so it can happen that good rooms become available!

aimed at anyone, is it worth it to pay more for a washbasin in your room?

No no no no no no. That extra £10 a week you'll have from not having one will be worth it.

No they don't you can't just come out with facts like that. I knew about 30-40 people in Oak House, Fallowfield. Not one of the was kicked out after first year, some may have had to do a re-take in the summer but they all came through fine.

Fallowfield is definitely the place to be, well it was at least when I was there 4 years ago.

Beware lots of people on this forum try to justify their inadequate social skills by suggesting things like this.

Well, you may blame me for having " inadequate social skills".. But what I say is what I hear from people who live in there (Owens Park Tower) and I don't make it up. Read what people post twice before making such harsh criticism...

Ah, thank you so much!

Late reply to it now so the issue might already be cleared but I went to Manchester a couple of weeks back but the girl showing us the accommodation didn't know about the firm or insurance thing so I phoned up instead. Good news, accommodation is guaranteed for both so I applied last week even though I haven't sorted out my firm or insurance yet

I have one in my room. TBH, I'd sooner have the extra £10pw that it's costing me. All it means is that I have to walk 3m less to brush my teeth in the morning, although some guys seem to think that it also allows them to walk 3m less when they need the loo :s-smilie:
Also, how have I only just discovered the Happiness Cafe (Precinct Centre)? £2 for a toasted baguette omnomnomnom
