Hi, Does anyone have any tips/advice regarding doing a teach a skill task at a primary pgce interview? Also I have been told that i have to provide written answers to some questions about my teach a skill task ie, what do want them to learn, how will you teach it, how will you know when they have learnt it, what will you do if they find it too easy/hard. They seem pretty straight forward questions but im worried they are expecting something more than the obvious answers. Also does anyone have any tips/advice for preparing a presentation on the day?

it was KS2/KS3 combined mathematics ...

    3. If a pupil said that her ex boyfriend was threatening her with violence would you be willing to give the girl a lift home in your car?
What would be the best response to that? Im curious....

The correct answer was "no"

Just think of it like this, if someone spots you in the car with a student.... what will happen? **** will go down! Even if your intentions are good it puts you in a compromising situation

I'd answer relating to what good practice would be in the school I currently work at:

Firstly, I would act according to school policy. If the policy was "no, no way, never" then I wouldn't.

Secondly I would never give a lift alone. At the school I work at, giving a lift to pupils in extreme circumstances is allowed, but there should be two members of staff in the car. This is obviously a good safety net against worries about allegations made against staff members. I would also contact the parents to inform them why and ask their permission.

However giving the student a lift home should be a last resort. Other things you might do first include:

*assessing the pupil's past behaviour/possible motivations to see if the request is genuine or a legitimate risk. Eg. they might have a history of making up excuses to try and get a lift home whenever its raining (I know a girl who does this)

*seeing if there is an alternative - an alternative route, getting a bus, walking with a group, getting their parent to get them a lift.

*talking to them about the problem and finding out the root of it. Is their fear realistic? If it is, how will they get home tomorrow, or the day after that? Is it a problem that can be resolved with the ex-boyfriend? Writing down these concerns, informing parents, etc.

Also, if it looks like you're going to make a big fuss and take everything very seriously, when all the student was after was a bit of attention, they might change their mind and decide to walk instead.

So, yes, as a last resort, with parental permission and another staff member; if there is a genuine risk, you don't want your student to walk into it. But I would try everything else first.

So has no one got any interview offers yet for applications to start in 2013? I've sent mine off and I'm excited/anxious/keen and want to know when they start and what they involve!

Has anyone had an interview at Leicester and can say what it involves?

I've got an interview at Roehampton next week! Can anyone tell me what it's like?

I have to do a presentation and show them a 'learning resource', whether it be a photo, object or activity. Actually have no idea for this! What sort of things do you think will go down with the interviewers?

I've got an interview for Swansea Metropolitan on Wednesday, eek! Seems so soon! For the teaching part I have to take a book or poem in with me and "choose an extract to read aloud and use the extract to teach something relevant for the primary classroom". Really struggling with this part, anyone got any pointers?

I have an interview at Bristol University on November 27th, and I haven't been asked to prepare anything at all, so I am nervous as hell because I am basically walking in there blind. :/

Can't believe I didn't notice that! Obviously too frantic. Not until the 17th Dec, so LOOOOOADS of time to prepare. Phew.

    Thanks

Blimey thats daunting! I am sure you will be fine - and remember that everyone is in the same boat as you!

One of my friends who went on to do a PGCE a few years ago had a similar situation to you. She didnt have a clue what to expect because they didnt say - it ended up being a discussion about a current affair in education - and then you had 1 minute to discuss the discussion to everyone - what you think about it/pros/cons etc. It was only a minute im guessing because you were not given the chance to prepare.

Obviously this is no guarentee for yours, but maybe it might be something similar?

Also, if you go on the university website - it usually informs you of the structure of the interview day. All the unis i have applied for have this. It doesnt tell you what it will entail - it gives you the times for discussions/interviews etc - so atleast you know what to expect.

    Hope this helps!

I've got an interview for Leeds Trinity on the 6th December, so just over a fortnight to prepare! Fairly daunting!
Don't know what I'm supposed to do for the interview, I've just emailed Trinity to see if I'll receive a letter with guidelines of what will happen on interview day.
