I looked at: Nottingham, Loughborough, Manchester, Warwick, Liverpool, and Leeds.
- Then applied to Nottingham and Loughborough, and could have gone to eather. (i got places in both, btu picked lufbra as prefrence)

There all good uni's, i really liked nottingham and manchester a lot, as warwich too.
- Manchester was in the middle of merging, and i think that put me off a bit.
- Liverpool said again and again how there coause was "proper" and "very much theoritically based" which is no what i wanted.
- And Warwick didnt really feel right.

Nottingham was amazing, and i ace'ed the interview, and would have loved to go there. But Loughborough clinched it, espcially after the second openday at each.
- The main thing was it seamed to be the most practical/hands on couarse, which is what i wanted, and what i beleave a lot of companys want.
- And speaking to people who i know who imploy engineers, including my uncal, they say that they would loughborough very highly indeed. (along with nottingham, and manchester, and the others, but very highly)

I really really love it here, and im sure i made the right choice.
- This may also be to do with fact ive watched one of my best friends go though a really hard time at nottingham and dropout after 16 weeks of going home and crying every w/end. (shes very clever, freindly, and extreamly persistant! but hated it.)

lol! Your tact is exemplary.
For civil engineering, Swansea is extremely well ranked (2nd in Times University guide), and highly respected. It's well rated for chemical engineering as well (6th).

lol well at least he managed to spell Loughborough right. :P

any suggestions for the best place to go for Electrical Engineering?

And while you're there, how about Aeronautical Eng?
i know someone whos doing engineering at bath....says its quite good ! apparently bath i just after oxbridge in engineering or something....lol
Reply 26
It depends, how do you want to do those specific types of engineering, alone or in a general engineering degree  ?

And Bath is good, but I reckon it would have stiff competition from Imperial too  !

Imperial is the best in engineering. even ahead of Oxford n Cambridge. maybe Bristol comes in fourth. forget about bath, southampton nottingham being among the top four. they all are good uni's but u must remember that certain skls give seek favour frm those who rank unis inorder to raise thier positions.

AAA frm Imperial, AAB bristol, AABa frm UCL, ABB frm Nottingham, ABB frm Southampton, n BBB frm Birmingham

Thats not strictly true, you can't just say that Imperial > Oxbridge, as far as I'm aware Oxford only do general engineering (with economics & management or computer science and specialisation in later years) anyway, so its not exactly easy to compare and it hurts us in the rankings.

Yes, oxbridge engineering seems very different to all other unis. I never applied so i havn't researched the courses, but they seem much broader and more detached from actual engineering. Greater emphasis on the theory, or at least thats my impression.

I'd like to think Bristol was 4th, its certainly got a high enough workload. But i think the rankings can also vary considerably depending on what discipline you are in. For example at Bristol Civil seems to be well ranked, aswell as Aero. The aero's work damn hard! But electrical and mechanical don't seem quite as highly ranked and other unis seem to have more of a specialisation for mechanical engineering.

I don't think bristol even does chemical either, i seem to remember Bath being highly ranked for that. And imperial is one of the best for all branches.

I wouldn't say it was detached, we have great links with industry and we end up covering a heck of a lot of material because its general. I've done more electrical engineering than some of my friends who are doing electrical engineering degrees. And it used to be really theoretical but its not anymore, there's a large practical element which is evidenced with the large number of motorsport, robotics and aviation companies recruiting near-exclusively from us  . It is different to a lot of other degrees though, you can't avoid civil, or mechanical say (or other disciplines) until the third year which makes it unsuitable for some.

Edinburgh.

But being here I am somewhat biased, we have an excellent research rating, department and industrial connections. Your choice ultimately.

lol of course you'd be biased. :P

i tried to send u a PM but it says ur inbox quota is full so i couldn't, tut tut!

The good thing about bias is a lack of guilt!

That said, it can help to find people from a Uni who say something - otherwise I'd just go and recommend everyone else, and I can't do that

is there a person here with an oxbridge offer who is going to choose imperial (or has chosen) for any type of engineering. i think the job prospects for an oxbridge engineer are better then for an engineer from imperial. should i really turn down an offer from cambridge - no. having lived in london i would prefer to stick pins in my eyes than go to imperial (applied only incase i changed my mind). also general engineering with specialisation is becoming more appealing to employers because so many projects are multi-disciplinary (most of the single discipline courses have common first and sometimes seconds years, and they make it clear than some people come out with a different degree to the one they started with). also i am choosing between durham and bristol for my insurance, any help would be great, thnks in advance.

someone help me out with my decisions please, i got offered places at all unis i applied to i.e Imperial(AAA) Bristol(AAB), UCL(AABa), Nottingham (ABB), Southampton (ABB) Birmingham (BBB) i got an A in my maths, an A in my AS physics and i am working towards an A in furthermaths and A2 physics. so wot do u guys think, imperial is definitely first choice, but thinking about taking a risk and putting Bristol as second or playing safe and choosing southampton or notts. wot wld u do if u were me?

for what course??

Bristol obviously....

But really its all about visiting the unis i think. I wouldn't automatically pick imperial because its got the highest offer. The only good things i hear about imperial are its reputation internationally. Everything else i hear about in on this forum is pretty negative about the place.

One thing I've found since coming to Uni is that which one you go to amongst the top doesn't seem to matter! If you're going to any of, say the top 10 or 20 engineering Uni's in the country, I wouldn't worry.

It doesn't seem worth worrying about, in hindsight. (Stressing over Oxbridge can be very bad altogether - nice if you get in but still!)
