We're doing exactly what the OP originally suggested, using a (relatively cheap) satellite dish and getting the stream from RTL, with Radio 5 Live - it works absolutely perfectly, the time delay between radio and TV is virtually unnoticeable. Definitely recommended!
Glad it works for you. was wandering if there would be a lag.

I just watch BBC highlights of qually on saturday evening on iPlayer, and the race highlights also on iPlayer Sunday evening.

I would like to subscribe to SKYF1 but I am going to wait at least a third of the way through the season first, to see if they can prove themselves.

Honestly, when it comes to actually watching the race, there's not a huge amount of difference between Sky and the BBC of last year. Just replace DC with Crofty and have Brudle talk a little less.

Honestly, I never found myself watching the buildup much last year, whether that will change I don't know. When you read about F1 on several stires, talk about it on forums and follow pretty much everyone in F1 on twitter as well as some independant F1 technical analysts (@scarbsf1 is my favourite), there's little that needs to be said on TV before the race!

Interesting discussion, the BBC highlights have been ok but I keep thinking that I've nodded off for a second when it skips a few laps! In my travels I found these guys http://www.f1satellite.co.uk which look to be offering an installation for the rtl feed. how good is five live coverage of the race?

Five Live is good, it's nice to have James Allen back if you remember him from previous years with ITV - a familiar face (well, voice), as it were. The before and after coverage isn't that long, but you'd expect that for a radio station. Alguersuari's also a great commentator in my opinion, he takes over the role of driver in situ very nicely.

It's not that bad; James Allen isn't as bad as he was at ITV. My only issue is that 5 Live go for more news headlines breaks than RTL do for advert breaks

EDIT: And you don't need to pay those rip off prices; a cheap dish and a Sunday afternoon to mount/align it is all that's needed (see my post here).
