I did pre-clinicals at Cambridge and now doing clinicals at GKT in london
Hi
rico are you going into a speciality eg. GP, A&E, ortho etc.
Are you enjoying it? I'm in year 11 and considering medicine an A&E doctor but probably will go into the RAF as a doctor and just wanted to know what it was like really!
Thanks

That is a very old post you have written to, its unlikely you'll get a reply from rico!!
Hmm, well you can have this reply. I'm a 4th yr at Liverpool and sponsored by the RN.

Not really sure what you'd like me to say about Medicine. It's varied, challenging, rewarding and frustrating in equal measure.

If you've got any questions then fire away. If I remember correctly the RAF cadets can't go into A+E Medicine but then again my careers aspirations change by the minute.

xx
I thought i'd give it a try even though it was old!
What are you going to specialise in if anything?

thanks

Am prob going to do A+E or gastro. Can't make my mind up and it changes generally by the day. It is fast becoming a diagnosis of exclusion. Just keep crossing off those careers which do nothing for me.

Having said all this, I'll probably end up in Public Health.
I'm currently applying for the Sixth Form Scholarship with a view to doing medicine, and regarding the point about having to do OASC minus hanger and fitness, is that definately true?

All the websites I've seen are very ambiguous as to whether or not you do, and I could do with finding out before I splash out on a gym membership!

I'm also looking to go down this route very soon(now that I have sorted my own medical issues out...RAF fit )! Will keep an eye on this old thread

To be honest, if you can do that, do it! Getting into the habit of going to the gym on a daily basis will stand you in incredibly good stead now. You'll only be paying for it while you're in sixth form, as 99% of universities have free or subsidised gyms anyway.

Better to splash out a little now and never have to worry about your fitness at all, than lurch into a sedentary lifestyle through university that leaves you worried about pre-IOT fitness and the suchlike.
I'm going to start a proper fitness regime etc anyway, as I'm disgracefully unfit, just if we don't do fitness tests at OASC there's no flat panic about it!

I can't believe how little there is about the sixth form scholarship on the RAF careers website! I would have thought they'd give out a lot more information about it...

They haven't got many to give out and so there is no need to increase the publicity and therefore the pool of applicants. Those that really want it and have the initiative/research skills will find out enough.

I'd suggest that you would want to give the best impresion to OASC regardless of whether you have to do the fitness test. There are a lot of people after such places and you need every advantage. The dvantages of not being a fatbody should be evident to you more than most.

Thankyou for that kick up the backside  I need to sharpen up!

You can't. You would have to leave the RAF and go to university to get the necessary degrees to become a Doctor. You might be able to get a cadetship or bursary from the RAF whilst doing the second half of your medical training. Do you have the qualifications to get onto a medical degree course?

Few points before even considering...
1)Med school competition is extremely high
2) Tuition fee rise in the coming years

Based on 1 and 2 - can you get in and afford to go if the RAF dont sponsor you, or do you rely on work/need to work in order to replace RAF income etc?

After 1 and 2 are solved, the RAF has high levels of competition for medical bursar/cadetship spaces, with a long process before your selected...

Its extremely hard, and would require you to accept the odds and go for a place at med school, with no assurance that you would be sponsored by the RAF..

No it's Pilot Officer. There's a few kicking around the UAS system so I'm pretty au fait with cadetships and all!

Wanted to pos rep this for good knowledge of UAS ranks, and also eloquent usage of "au fait".

At the moment it's tough getting sponsored to be an RAF medic, I know of one guy who did well at OASC but was told there are no spaces. But if you're in year 11, by the time you apply it will be better.

Don't join the RAF, join the army, the AMS is a far bigger organisation and will probably give you a better career as a doctor.

It's all pretty purple and generic other than Aeromed and Paramedic training ( as Flight Nurse and FNA are crab only trades and the crab side has got it;s stuff together over paramedic training a lot better than the others - though they are generally RW WSOps rather than MAs)
Hello,
I was just wanting to ask, I am studying my A Levels presently and was wondering whether after applying to the RAF I could get into Medical School through the RAF?

Thank you for and help/ advice given.
