Re: St John Ambulance SocietyWell we have some in our divison...tut...tut :P(Original post by zippyRN)
cycle first aiders are not meant to lone respond.
you CANNOT be a Cycle Responder until you are 18 due to legal issues over initiating oxygen therapy or offering entonox.
also there are a number of CRUs who do not have Cycle first aiders at all as the cost / benefit for Cycle FA is not felt to be adequate in that locality -
Re: St John Ambulance SocietyI suspect what you've actually got are cycle first aiders, using 'downgraded' Cycle responder 'yellow pannier' kits rather than the CFA kits ...(Original post by Natalie21)

Re: St John Ambulance Societyi say this again you CANNOT be a cycle responder until you are 18(Original post by ~Justin~)
However they can access the training at 16...
16 -18s in CRUs are Cycle First Aiders , they cannot solo respond, they cannot use medical gasses -
Can 16-18year olds treat without an adult present, according to guidelines?(Original post by zippyRN)

Re: St John Ambulance SocietyYES, assuming they are a First Aider (old or new spec) or an (old spec) AFA , as new spec AFA is 18 + only because of gasses.(Original post by Natalie21)

Nothing stops any member treating off duty or beginning to treat while on duty, it just requires that at least an Adult FA sees and signs off for discharge when on duty. so cadet FAs or TFAs can start to treat while on duty but would need to review the case with an FA or more clinically senior person before discharging the patient.
When C008 medication policy comes out and IF it changes the minimum age for gasses administration the restrictions on access to Cycle responder and new spec AFA may change, however it's unlikely that crewing will be opened to under 18s at any point. -

Any LINKS members here at all? -
Re: St John Ambulance SocietyHey,(Original post by rlw31)
Hello! I'm at uni and I'm a member of the uni's First Aid Soc, but I don't think I'm Links member. I had all of my basic first aid assessments ages ago, but I still haven't got certification as they haven't arranged a CRB check for us yet
Shame about your CRB; chase them up!
I did some duties with Surrey LINKS division for the Rubix nightclub were fun times got free refills of coca cola lol -
Re: St John Ambulance SocietyYeah, it's so annoying, I did my last assessment in December, so many of us are still waiting on the CRB check and I'm a little worried that I might have to redo the assessment if I don't get it done soon.(Original post by KingGoonIan)

I would have loved to have done the Great South Run had the check been done in time! -
Re: St John Ambulance SocietyEssex LINKS member here.(Original post by carl_senior)

I'm pretty sure that with these boards being aimed at university students, there are quite a lot of LINKS members around.
Hell, even I've just spotted this thread, and St John Ambulance is a big part of my time at uni. -
Re: St John Ambulance Society
Doing a fire station incident practical in about 30mins at my local fire station - should be really fun. We usually get the firemen to smash two or more old bangers into each other then we put a few volunteers in them to be casualties and then we work with the fire crew to get them out of the cars. Usually involves smashing windows and sawing off the roofs of the cars. This time am gonna be treating I hope, bet I'll just be holding someone's neck for 30mins lol.
Anyone else ever done an incident night like this at a fire station? -
Re: St John Ambulance SocietyThat sounds really really interesting. Our unit plans on doing something similar close to the university campus where we get a few smashed up cars and involve the police and fire brigade. Sort of a mass incident scenario. Should be good.(Original post by KingGoonIan)
