Re: St John Ambulance Society16 and 17 year old members can take the 'adult' First Aider qualification and be used as First aiders on duty once they have passed , there are few restrictions that remain in place for under 18s , but you'll be able to treat independently once you've done the First Aider qualification.(Original post by Natalie21)

some Cycle Response Units have 'cycle first aiders' and it may be possible to join a cycle response unit as a cycle first aider at 16 or 17 , but not all CRUs have First Aiders some are strictly 18 + and Cycle Responder / Ambulance Crew cyclist / HCP cyclist ...
Advanced First Aider ( per the new syllabus) , Community Responder and Ambulance Crew qualifications remain restricted to those 18 or over, and access to driver training requires you to have had a full cat B for 2 years as well as any additional categories required for specialist / large vehicles -

Re: St John Ambulance SocietyVarious SJA divisions will be run in different ways by volunteers so it is hard to predict how long you may have to wait but I can tell you that SJA divisions like the one you have applied to will be very keen to get you on board ASAP.(Original post by Link96ra)

Hi, I really need some help basically, I wondered how long it would take to get a membership for SJA.
I applied for an Assistant Youth Leader role in January and I only did my training in May, now I am still waiting for a response and I dont know when I will be able to start.

Re: St John Ambulance SocietyI'm 15 and I've been in St John for six years now, I'm currently giving myself a headache trying to add up volunteering hours; 239.5 and counting 0.0. I'm now a sergeant at my cadet division and I also help at the nearest badger sett on fridays

Re: St John Ambulance SocietyI did an Olympics duty today (of sorts); did the Olympic torch relay. I got a really great view and was camped there for like 30mins waiting for the torch to come, as the police came round the corner I and my patrol had to attend a casualty with a suspected stroke, was such bad luck.

Did anyone hear from a company called wesser before? They have invited me to an interview for a job which involves doing door-to-door fundraising for St Johns Ambulance.
The problem is that I need to relocate to wherever in the country they are short of staff. So I will be living with other fundraisers in an appartment.
Apart from it being a regular job, I think it would also nicely fit into my medical school application.
I would be grateful if anyone that has done a smiliar job could give me some more information and how they found it. -

Re: St John Ambulance SocietyGot my first invitation to the new spec AFA course. Interesting how the course overlaps on modules with the PTA course so is taught alongside it. Also here is the entry criteria (for anyone who is interested):
- Have completed a full first aid course.
- Have passed an assessment for role in the past calendar year
- Be medically fit to undertake the role of advanced first aider. (participants will be required to lift a 70kg manakin on a carry chair, up and down a flight of stairs).
Will anyone here be going for it anytime soon? -

As I know the majority here are probably over 18, I was wondering...are the over 18 units much better? -

Re: St John Ambulance Societythere isn't a LINKS unit at Leeds Met although there is at Leeds Uni ( and the infamous LMSU) , plus there's West Park who are a 'normal' unit who meet Headingley ish , Armley + Wortley who meet in Armley ... and a few other units around Leeds(Original post by KingGoonIan)

there was a LINKS unit at Leeds Met a few years ago but that folded because of a lack of people willing to take on committee roles iirc .Last edited by zippyRN; 17-07-2012 at 18:50. -

Re: St John Ambulance SocietyYou can join the adult division at 16. At my division there are quite a few new members who have joined at 16-18. I don't quite understand what you mean by transferring when you go Uni(Original post by wolf-pack)
I want to join when I'm 18 so I don't have to join the cadets :P hopefully if I go to university they'll transfer me or something- I have no idea how it works! Does anyone have any advice?
