Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012No worries!! I got an email from UCL saying that my second reference had been received, then an email 2 weeks later saying it hadn't been received and I needed to send it straight away - panic!! After discussing it with the senior admissions tutor, she said that my application would be considered without the second reference until it was sent through (which was probably after the deadline)(Original post by juliamcgowan26)
Don't believe it! I am such a reference jinx!! just called QMU to make sure my references had been recieved and they said that the 1st page of one was missing so they couldn't use it!!!! Arghhh!! STRESS!!! I've just had to email my old lecturer again to get him to resend it - I hate harrassing people about references!
It's just given me another reason to freak out!! Hope they don't just ignore my application completely now! Don't want it to be chucked in the bin!!
I hate this must admit reading other people's experience really scares me! I'm a nervous wreck!!
Don't freak out! All will be ok x -
Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012Haha it does..... thought I might have heard from Essex this last week, but no....(Original post by dreamyfleur)

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012
Hey guys!
Quick update for you - spoke to the admissions lady for the Newcastle course the other day, and she said successful applicants will be contacted before Christmas, because the interviews are gonna be the week starting 16th January!
Eeeeeek, I literally can't stop checking my emails!
xx -
Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012
So apparently I accidentally applied for 2011/2012 entry for Newcastle *facepalm*. Kind lady at admissions changed it for me before I had even noticed (cue me having a little heart jump when I got 'application withdrawn' email
). Although I don't really understand why it was even possible to still apply for that entry date... but anyway!

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012Hello!(Original post by JoJo_G)
Hi Everyone,
I am so happy to have found this thread because I thought it was only me who was in a postgrad SLT-induced panic!
I applied last year and didn't get in so I'm even more nervous this time around!
Did you have any interviews or feedback last year? x -
Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012
Hi everybody,
I wish everyone success with your application. I've actually decided that it's time for me to pursue what I am passionate about. however, it's too near the deadlines, so I think I'm applying for 2013. I hope later I can get some advice from those going to city.
My background is engineering. I resigned from my work when my son was identified as a deaf son and help him to learn to talk. It's been 5 years and now he is going to normal school. speech therapists and audiologist said he would never speak, forcing me to do a lot of self learning to help him. Then, I find I love this field very much. For everything the deafness has taken, I agree there is something of greater value has been given.
It's rewarding to help people to communicate. I know very well how frustrated it is when we cannot communicate what we want and understood by others. You feel alone and isolated. Though I don't have communication problem, but I couldn't share joy and sorrow with others; things like when my 2 yrs old start making sounds..people only think he's delayed, they don't think ' wow, this kid has start to make progress'....so I kept everything to myself.
So, I am happy to know many of SLT-to-be here. You help to make a big difference in people's life, the one with the problem as well as the families too. -
Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012I'd thought I'd share my experiences in preparing for applying in case any of it useful to you.(Original post by neffie)

Do you have evidence of recent study within five years? If not have you considered what you will do to cover that requirement? I think an A-level in a relevant study might do but its best to email the university yourself. If its financially feasible, I took the open university route. I emailed the universities (not city unfortunately) with what I was planning to study and they advised me on what was best and whether it was acceptable.
I probably took too many credits but I was worried about how competitive it is and worried about my academic ability (2:2 is my first degree) - and I'm only applying for undergraduate SLT - however I think the requirements for recent study are the same for both.
I did two modules, Discovering Pschology and Health and Social Care. I've really enjoyed doing this and if you've studied at degree level before you can do the work required through studying on average a few hours a week so it was easy to fit around other commitments. I found the OU system set out very well and both modules are interesting if you've had no knowledge of the subjects before. If you do decide to do this route, the deadline for applying to some modules is early January. Its imprinted on my mind as I missed the deadline for applying last year.
On experience, I don't know what you've done but I was told to cover a range of different groups, children, adults and learning difficulities. My main experience is in voluntering as adult literacy tutor (and the reason why I first heard and became interested in SLT). I don't know what the system is like in England (I live in Scotland) or even other local authority areas in Scotland, but this volunteering is actually very useful and relevant to SLT. We see people who probably should have got SLT or some kind of support when they were at school, fell through the gap and now are with us, so I've met a range of people with language and communication difficulities, so its a good way of meeting a lot of client groups. In addition I get a frequent range of training courses in learning and communication difficulities. So this might be something to consider and of course see how professional the organisation/volunteering opportunity is. In Scotland adult literacy has been a lot more organised and professionalised (you have to go on a training course for example) in the last couple of years.

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012
Hi Keith,
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I'm in a non-UK, non-EU country. we don't even have SLT in school setting. so not very diverse experience that I can get. Anyway, I will try to volunteer in places for autistic child and asking the therapist if I can be their speech assistant. Here, we don't even have enough SLT for us to get weekly treatment. If you can get once in a month, that's considered very good here.
You give me a good point about study within the 5 years. I need to ask the uni. I've emailed many times but no reply at all. even the agent here still didn't get any reply from the uni representatives. I wonder why?Last edited by neffie; 12-12-2011 at 14:26. -
Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012Although its good to have work experience and contact with SLT, volunteering with people with language and communication difficulities would also be of benefit. For example many potential students have experience with volunteering with a charity that helps people who have strokes in the capacity of a communication partner (including myself as this was suggested to me by the university).(Original post by neffie)

Who have you emailed? For one university I emailed the department directly, for another university I emailed the admissions people. I got a reply within about two weeks.
Have you also considered undergraduate, it is the same course as a Master's, its just a Masters takes less time. You are allowed to apply for both. There are quite a few people with a degree who do the undergraduate as well for various reasons such as getting a 2:2 (me), not having enough work and volunteering experience or not having a relevant enough first degree. This would be something to check if your first degree is engineering which some universities might not consider relevant.Last edited by keeth; 12-12-2011 at 14:49. -

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012
Keeth,
I've checked other universities but it seems only city admit ppl from different background. I also like this uni for having modules on hearing, research and evident based.
in my case, I do a lot of volunteering in helping hearing impaired child to talk. Personally, i don't know if this is right or not, basically helping a deaf child to talk give an advantage where you have experienced range of communication difficulties starting from helping them with acquiring vocab, sounding the words out, then helping them with making sentence, and correcting the syntax, literacy to name a few. Compared to hearing kids with communication disorders, many have the vocab but they have other problems like sounding it out, or reasoning, or making sentences. Basically, the kids whether the hearing kids or not, we will have problem with the behaviour and not getting attention from them and challenge us to keep them interested in doing the therapy. helping people with stroke sounds good. will search around for the opportunities.
I've emailed both to the department and the uni, still no answer... should I wait until after they finish with selection for 2012? -
Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012I had an interview at Sheffield which I thought went well. On the day they basically said that everyone who is offered an interview is suitable for the course but it's a case of too many people applying for the number of places. The only feedback I got was that I should get more relevant experience and they gave the example of working as a SLT assistant.
So fingers crossed that the additional experience I've got this year will be enough

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012
I literally just cried on the phone to City admissions, how embarrassing.
Turns out all of the Unis i've applied to haven't received one of my references (even though he told me three weeks ago he had sent my references). Reading and Sheffield were really friendly and helpful about it, said I need to contact him and get him to send them asap and gave me direct email addresses. This happened a little while back with UCL and they were great too, really helpful and let my application be considered without the reference.. but the lady from City was extremely rude. She didn't let me finish, cut through my sentences and told me i'd missed the deadline (Friday afternoon) and there is nothing I can do about it. Absoloutely gutted
Need cheering up!!! x

sorry to hear that! Could you try ringing up tomorrow and asking to speak to the course leader instead? The admissions lady might have been rude, but the course leader might be more sympathetic about it if you got your application in on time? References are out of your control! Hope you're okay xx

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy 2012One of my friends has had this problem- it states on the site that everything has to be in on the 9th no exceptions- my friend didn't get her written additional statement in! X(Original post by Kath_H)
