Resentment of the wealthy?
Hi everyone,
So I'm not new to TSR, but I wanted to make this account particularly for this question and I may continue to use it as anon. The reason I wanted to be anonymous is kind of embarrassing actually. I'm planning on moving to Edinburgh in either Sept 2012 of Sept 2013 (still undecided.) One thing which has been concerning me is how people will react to certain things. For example if I get a Ferrari on my 21st birthday or live in a penthouse in the city centre or something instead of student accommodation. In Dubai people don't really think twice about how much money I have, because there are people with so much more, but this is not so much the case with Edinburgh from what I remember when I was at boarding school in the UK. I mean even though I went to a top British public school I was called rich, posh etc. I don't really want to sacrifice the lifestyle I'm used to, I am willing to to an extent, but I don't want to do so completely. I was just wondering if anyone knows if I'll be able to fit in comfortably. Even my friends in Dubai joke about me being rich and I used to enjoy the attention, but now I feel resentment from others who aren't as well off and I also don't want to attract people only because of, not even mine, but my father's money. Thanks in advance guys

Re: Resentment of the wealthy? He went to a private school in edinburgh, he knows what scotland is like!
OP did you go to fettes?
TBH people will only resent you if you brag about your money and are arrogant about it. So if you start flashing your money around here and there then people will start to get pissed off. If i were you I wouldn't get a ferarri............... well ok I would, but I wouldn't drive it to uni everyday to show off infact a good idea would be to take public transport everyonce and a while to show you do normal things like everyone else. There's no need to hide the fact you are rich, but you need to let people know that you are normal like them and money has no impact in your personallity. -
Re: Resentment of the wealthy?Hahaha, thanks everyone. Nope, I went to Merchiston. I don't even know why I've said this because if there are any Merchi lads here they'll know exactly who I am. FML.(Original post by Foghorn Leghorn)

EDIT: I was thinking of just toning down my lifestyle a bit, like get a nice car, but not a Ferrari. Live in a nice area, but not ridiculously expensive etc. I don't think anyone needs to know the extent of my family's wealth, I mean uni is about reinventing yourself

Re: Resentment of the wealthy?
you might attract the wrong kind of friends (like show offs or leeches), perhaps not a ferrari at uni and something more modest like an audi r8 or bmw?, keep the ferrari at your home
but don't worry too much, i'm sure you'll find good friends and haters gon' hate.
you should be a mind **** and drive a banger like a 10 year old fiat punto and when your friends see where you live, or the penthouse people see what you drive they'll be like :O.Last edited by F1 fanatic; 04-12-2011 at 10:38. Reason: cos of your last post -

Re: Resentment of the wealthy?well you could always lie about how rich you are, I mean, all anyone at uni knows about you is what you tell them (provided they don't snoop around on your facebook or whatever). It would be cool if you just went into the same sort of accomodation as everyone else has, then after you've made friends, spring it on them that you're obscenely rich and want to treat them to the finer things in life.(Original post by bayernmunich)

Re: Resentment of the wealthy?
Thanks everyone, actually some decent advice here. Also yeah, about the Audi R8 being modest - okay so maybe not as flashy as a Ferrari, but still think people would think I'm rich if I went around in that. I just don't want to be judged based on how much money my parents have and I don't want people to think I have a cushy life and don't need to work and stuff.

Re: Resentment of the wealthy?Zooooom.(Original post by No Future)
Audi is probably fine, it's very middle class. Though if I had the funds, I would go with something like a Maserati. Nothing wrong with having a good lifestyle.
**** me, you guys have serious moolah, I thought I was lucky for getting a Lotus, jesus christ... -
Re: Resentment of the wealthy?Lol just saw this thread again. I like Maseratis but here in Dubai it's mostly girls driving them which has kind of thrown me off them(Original post by No Future)

Re: Resentment of the wealthy? As I'm from Edinburgh I can assure you that you will fit in perfectly fine with the posh people of Edinburgh. The only hassle you'll get is from people like me that are not rich and are jealous of your lifestyle. Also, I'm pretty sure that there are no 'penthouses' in the city centre unless you're meaning an old fashioned flat at an expensive price.(Original post by bayernmunich)

Re: Resentment of the wealthy?
In my experience people don't really resent wealth; they resent ostentatious displays of wealth. If you live like a normal human being most people won't particularly care how well off you/your family is. Conspicuous consumption is going to get you attention, hence the term, and that attention won't necessarily be positive.
