There's been a few Horsie threads, but it seems no one keeps posting and they die out So I thought I'd start one - please keep it going peeps So, here goes:
Who rides?
How long have you been riding for?
Are you competative (SJ, D, XC, etc.)? Or do you prefer to take it easy and have lessons and hacks?
Are you lucky enough to own/loan/share a Horse/Pony?
I ride, I have done for about 6 years, although I've just started again after a long-ish break. I am loving it and totally forgot about some muscles! I used to have lessons and hack really, but I did a few "mini shows" and the like. Loved jumping!
I did have a Pony on loan for about a year, but she was more of a pet than anything, she was "damaged goods" and was hard to back, but I developed a bond with her, tamed her down and taught her to trust again She was great, but it wasn't practical and we couldn't afford to keeo her just as a pet. She was beautiful. A dark Bay colour, with a tiny sock and a star. About 14.1hh. Just gorgeous
I thought there was another Horse riding thread... but that seems to have died
I RIDE! I have done since I was 4... so that'll be 14 years now!
I had lessons nearly every week up until I was 13 then was thought "sensible" enough to look after my own
My first horsey was an old cob type (14.3hh), no one knew her age she was that old. We got her free from my neices babysitter because she couldn't look after her anymore. I couldn't ride her and she was more of a pet, but I gave her a good last few years!
Then I got Robbie my lovely Connemara who I love to bits (during the last summer I had Rosie (the old cob)) and they got on great!
He was the worst thing ever to load... ended up having a horse whisperer come and sort his ways out! Which worked, and he'll now walk in the trailer without batting an eyelid!
Well when Rosie passed away, Rob lived on his own for a few months until he got so lonely with just cows and sheep, so we bought Sooty my little Shetland! We think her old owners beat her or something because she was really nervous when we got her, but she's a lovely pony now!
So that's a short tale of my horseys... so far... However, I'll be leaving for Uni in September. I don't want to sell my horseys!
I don't do a great deal of competing with Rob at the moment. I used to do a fair lot, Pony Club, Riding Club and near enough everything we could find hehe!
Hopefully as my January exams are over I can work on getting him fit for a few Indoor Spring/Winter SJ comps!
Never enough time these days!
I love my horse, he's like my best mate! You fellow horse owners will probably know what I mean!
wow, i really want to try horse riding but don't know where to start - any ideas? I live in Leeds so obviously i would probably have to travel quite a bit to get to a stables. But i'm going to Cardiff uni so i'm sure there would be places in Wales. So what do people suggest i should do to get started?
wehey! god only sold my section D about 6 months ago but it's killing me!
been riding 10 years! best thing i ever did was start having lessons. Got my first pony when i was 12 she was a 3 1/2 yr old exmoor cross and i schooled her tought her to jump etc-was an amazing sj, sold her and she's showjumping bsja well last i heard.
then got molly the evil chestnut mare, stunning liver chestnut hanovarian x appaloosa, i shooled her for about a year intensively because she was extremely temperamental and would nap dangerously-would rear in the middle of the road- almost vertical, jumped into cars tried to roll me off, reared and leapt into a judge at shows, but qualified for SWPA for SHP!!-got her checked over- she was fine but just hormonal!
sold her eventually got mabon- a total sweetheart gorgeous bay section D who i did show a bit and did general RC like xc,sj, etc etc-he put his foot to anything jumped anything i aimed him at, and did anything i asked! but had to sell him cos i have no time!!!
hoping to get into the riding club at uni to start back up again!
so that's my life story haha!

oooh if you're going to cardiff pontcanna is in the centre of cardiff, but if i were you i would try and get to somewhere just outside of cdiff for nice hacks etc because i think pontcanna just use the park! seriously it's amazing!

thanks for that, i'll look out for it. Do they have a website?
Well I'm in Leeds and there's PLENTY of places. I go to Middleton Park Equestrian Centre now, it's RDA as well, which is fab! Princess Anne opened it officially in 1993. It has a HUGE indoor school, a new outdoor school and it's all BHS registered and stuff. It's an absolutley fantastic place to ride and the level of instruction is A* I love it there and am settling in well. Take a look: www.mpec-rda.co.uk

I've been riding most of my life, but had quite a long gap until a few years ago. Then I got Alfie, my gorgeous 6 year old cob. We then got Milly the shetland as his companian. When we got her she was almost impossible to catch, but she is a little angel now.
Me and Alfie pretty much just hack out. He's young and hasn't had much schooling but we're working on it He was very nappy when I first had him but he has got so much better and is a wonderful hacking horse. He also has a terrible habit of getting insanely muddy, and as he's a mainly white piebald it takes forever to get him clean
Are you competative (SJ, D, XC, etc.)? Or do you prefer to take it easy and have lessons and hacks? I used to compete at showing, HOYS/RIHS/BSPS stuff, not Gymkhana's. I gave that up in 2003, sold 2 of my horses and have just had the one + companion for the last 2 years.
Are you lucky enough to own/loan/share a Horse/Pony? Yes, I have two currently. One that can be ridden and one that can't (she's only 1!). But I'm selling her (well, going to advertise her) next month, so I can go to university.
I do feel ready to have a break, now. Having had a horse constantly at home for 16 years, I just feel like I don't want the 'hassle' of having to do them twice a day. I'm not afraid to admit I like going out, shopping, doing what young people do and Horses just simply aren't a big part of my life anymore.
When mine do go, I will find something to ride. Horses have always been part of me, that'll never go. I think it's nice in the way that horses are always something you can come back to in later life. I definitely do not regret for a second having them, I've loved every minute. I loved competing, but now I'm moving onto the next stage of my life and I'm afraid horses can't come with me.
I will bawl my absolute heart out when P goes. I worship the ground she walks on and I can categorically say now she has been my horse of a lifetime. I'll never have as successful or have a more expensive/more suited to the discipline horse again and she's an absolute pleasure to own, look after and love. Bless her, she doesn't have a nasty bone in her body.
Ooooh fellow riders! I've been riding for about 7 years (although seriously only about 2.5) I am loaning an ID x TB chestnut mare (I know, I know...) in about two weeks. I compete with her in unaff. showjumping and dressage. I definitely hope to continue with it at university (otherwise I'll be very, very grumpy)
omg a riding thread!! never came across the other ones that have apparently been posted on here.
iv been riding for 14years now and have managed to get so overattached to all my furry friends that we are now the proud owners of 7!! they go from 8hh up to 16:3hh but mine is the 15:3 connemaraXthoroughbred. i still do pony club stuff with her (mostly for the lessons) but our main thing is eventing.
very much hoping to keep her near uni and get to do some of the southern circuit although that depends on getting into durham as we have friends near there... Either way tho i cant really see her being sold either!! she's been such a brave little star over the last four years - coming from a girl who broke her in knowing bugger all and galloped her senseless she's stretched out all the painful muscles and is longer and looser every day.
anyone else agree that horses are so often amazingly brave? bet you'v all seen the sort of thing i mean in your dealings with them. some people could really take a leaf out of their book sometimes!!
There was another riding thread that died a death juts before chrimbo. Nice to see another one starting. Should it pick up and prove popular I will stick it.
Cheers!...Now if we could get more people talking Talk about anything to do with Horses, be it how your latest lesson went or even a funny thing your horse did...ya know I'm having a lesson tomorrow, so I'll say how that went.

the term 'best ' is so broad! everyone has different preferences etc.
e.g for all round honest fun in a horse i'd say a cob/welsh D. For athletic ability, warmbloods/thoroughbreds, for beauty/elegance i'd say arabs or andalucians( god i lurrve andalucians!) arabs are generally known for their endurance-they are quite fine these days, but the 'old fashined types' tend to be more solidly built hence stronger!
there are just soo many breeds though, and no two horses in any breed are the same, this is a hard question!
you'll probably find a breed you love the most when you start riding though.
Then again a good old heinz 57 could be the best horse you ever have!
Approximately how much does a lesson cost? Are they generally the same prices throughout the country, and if they are different, what is the highest i can expect to pay for beginners lessons.?
you can usually get lessons for over a tenner- £11/£12 is the usual around here for a group lesson, which are best to start with. Private are usually around double that for the same time. This includes hiring a pony, and sometimes you have to pay to hire a hattoo. But you could buy one for about £30 if you're definitely doing it regularly.
