"the quality of work there will be good to, as they're quite selective with applicants, but the same can be said about leeds."
are they really that selective? i thought they weren't since they have so many places at ccw  do you know the numbers of how many apply and how many places there are?

well it's supposed to be the camberwell, chelsea and wimbledon college foundations all put together, so it's essentially the same amount of places i believe? about 1 in 4 get in, so there'll be about 3000 applicants.

Yess, you guys are right! I got my reply in the post today and I got in!!! Ahh, I'm so happy! I never thought they'd like my portfolio. Even the way they reviewed was so nerve racking. At LCC they have a group interview and you get to talk about yourself also which gives you more of a chance. Who else got in? Well whoever did, I guess I'll see you guys on the 3rd of September!

Did you get offer from LCC or CCW? I got an offer from LCC, London College of Communication, but don´t know what to do, cause I got offer also from Kingston.

I'm the same, I don't know what to pick between lca, ccw or Kingston.. I realise this is not something I should be complaining about!!
Leeds looked like it had good facilities, and the tutors were so friendly.. Leeds seemed like a really fun place to go out and stuff aswel but maybe everyone would just be there to party and have no interest in work??
Ccw, I'd nearly go just for the reputation but it's such a huge course and apparently you only get 3 studio days a week?
Kingston seemed competitive to get into so I suppose the people on the course will be focused and stuff. And it's close to london.. Does anyone know if it has a good reputation when it comes to getting onto a degree course?

hello  I am facing similar stuggle, Kingston vrs LCC (UAL). Kingston is competitive this year, indicating that the quality of students will be high, when I had a phone interview, they´ve said that they take 106 home students and only 25 international, the course is cheaper, the campus looks friendly, but the LCC has name, prestige from big UAL and the thing that matter to me the most is the fact that I can choose a pathway right away. But it still breaks my heart to say no to kingston so I haven t replied yet...Any advice before I say yes to LCC?

apparently the head of LCC messed up and got fired/quit or something, so it's not been left in the best state? i just recall hearing about that, but don't take my word for it! but that's something to consider anyway. you've got a tough choice, as LCC would be really good for building a portfolio right from day one as all your work will be related to the field you want to go into, but kingston is so competitive to get into! good luck with your decision.

If you want to base your choice on prestige (not a great idea to start with...), then Kingston has a far better reputation for their foundation than LCC. It's a myth that all UAL courses come with automatic prestige attached to them, because whilst a lot are industry leading, fantastic courses, some are not so hot, and are running purely off the back of UAL's name. UAL have simply become very good at marketing themselves.

(I was going through exactly the same decision as you last year, between LCC and Kingston for foundation. I went for, as you would guess, Kingston, and have no regrets. Having said this, my friend went to LCC and has had a similarly good time, and got offers for his top choices.)

Could you tell me something more about what you think about Foundation courses at Kingston and LCC? Can you make some more comparison? I woul be very thankful since I can´t decide! I am not basing my decision on name, the thing that attracts me the most on LCC is the fact that I can choose the pathway right away, in my case 3D. I am quite sure I want to do this, so I am afraid that I will "waste" time with things out of my interest such as fashion or fine art. What would you do in my case? was your friend satisfied with his decision to go to LCC or was sorry about not choosing Kingston? Thanks by now

My friend tried for Kingston but didn't get in. He does graphics, so it's a little different, but he's satisfied with the course. He doesn't have much praise for it, but it's done its job in terms of places next year. (He's going to Chelsea)

I, however, have nothing but praise for Kingston foundation. I'm also in graphics, but the people in 3D are, on the whole, loving it. I don't think that you would be wasting your time doing rotation; it all feeds into the work you end up producing, and it's good to get a grounding in several disciplines before settling, even if you know what you want to do, in my opinion.

Because the kingston course is small, you get to know pretty much everyone. Usually around 20 people do 3D, which means you get a tonne of tutor time. This is compared to (at a guess) 100 at LCC. We are also expected to be in pretty much 9-5 5 days a week, whereas my friend at LCC is in about 2-3 times a week. It depends what you're looking for in a course really.

I obviously can't make a fair comparison, because I've never studied at LCC, but Kingston seems far more tight knit, and I personally found the work at the end of year show last year at Kingston more exciting.

I know about all advantages of Kingston, that´s why it breaks my heart to refuse the offer. I have this feeling of my heart telling me that I should choose Kingston. As I have said, I would do that immediately if I was sure that I can concentrate on 3D. Usually, the deadline for submiting application for degree courses is at the end of January- I am afraid that I will not built strong portfolio for architecture or other spatial course if I spend too much in other fields. I know every area has its magic and is worth trying, but...Well, it might be just my misconception, right? Could you tell me, how it works? You mentioned rotation. I guess it is spendind time in each area. How long does it take? When Can I work solely on 3D?
I don´t know who you are, but I am very thankful for your answers. It is the most important decision in my life that I am going to make, so I want to make sure it is the right one. The time I have to make final decision is April 4th. Two days left.

Hey,

No worries, I was feeling the same thing as you last year.

Basically the way it works is the first thing you do is a 6 week rotation of all the different disciplines you can specialise in (Fine art, graphics, illustration, 3D, fashion and moving image[although you cannot specialise in moving image, it comes under graphics and illustration]). Then there is a 3 day drawing trip, over which you make your decision over where to specialise. So you can work on 3D about 7 weeks in. Keep in mind that the course starts at the very beginning of September, so this is an extra 6 weeks compared to most degree courses. You break up late for Christmas, on the 15th or so, and come back early, on the 3rd of Jan. There isn't a reading week or half term or any break at all in the first term.

Because of the tight turn around for uni portfolios, you're expected to work extremely hard. You'll be in 5 days a week, sometimes late into the night. I personally didn't mind this, as everyone was in the same boat, and was working just as hard. I can honestly say that if you put in the work, and listen to the tutors, you will get onto the course you want. They're fantastic, and I wouldn't worry about the time constraints as long as you're willing to work.

Ah, almost forgot to say - A lot of the work I did in my rotation (everything apart from fine art which I didn't document...) went into my portfolio for application to Graphics. Tutors across all creative disciplines want to see potential, and a creative mind, as much as subject-specific work.

My account is naturally pretty one-sided, but I cannot recommend Kingston highly enough. I never like to tell someone to definitely go somewhere, but it sounds like the only issue is the rotation thing at the beginning - if this is the case then I would take the offer!

I decided for Kingston. It wasn´t only your advice (but for sure, it played a significant role in my decision making), it was also the gut feeling, I literally followed my heart. I am now satisfied with my decision, which I was not when I thought I will go for LCC. I can´t explain the feeling...I think I am making good decision. Btw, where are you studying right now? At Kingston? Maybe I will meet you one day and well, I hope I will be able to honestly thank you for helping me to make the right choice

congratulations man, sounds like you're excited. I'm excited.
Yeah, I'm at Kingston at the moment. Maybe we will bump into each other next year, who knows.

I have just finished CCW foundation. I URGE anyone to read this before accepting a place. I chose CCW for the reputation and i regret it SO much. You specialise in January, 3 course days a week with a different tutor each day which means I had to make my portfolio with hardly any help what so ever. Applying to fashion meant i was going for an extremely competitive course and applied to the top universities.
None of my work from before january was even vaguely relevant because even though i knew i wanted to do fashion the tutors i had for the fist part of the course didnt let me do any fashion/textiles work because none of them were designers and were allocated randomly. So from january i have barely slept, have no social life and have been so stressed because i had no idea what to put in my portfolio what so ever to get in. Luckily, due to this extremely hard work i got my first choice but many people didnt.

You dont get your own space
we had 90 students crammed into 2 small rooms so you couldnt move and most people went to college a few times a month becuase it wasnt worth it.
the CCW name isnt as respected as you might think.
No support for work outside college. (i have secured myself many internships but this was down to me and i was pretty much discouraged from doing so even though everyone knows internships in fashion are crucial)

I will answer any questions on this as I wish someone could have told me how bad it would have been.

oh man, this really sucks to hear as i've accepted my place and declined my offers at LCA and manchester school of art. :/ i'm hoping that because you went in the first year it opened, they will have seen what didn't worked and how the course could be improved for next year? but i guess the obvious thing to do would be to decrease the numbers which they haven't done. reading this i feel like an idiot for not accepting manchester, i had SUCH a good vibe for the course but the location scared me off as it's very far from home. my current art teachers are useless and i did my portfolio on my own this time round as well, so at least i'm used to that. thanks for the heads up.

do you know if the course was better for communication arts specialisms? one of the reasons i chose CCW is that i really want to do an illustration degree at camberwell.

Ok dont panic i think there are ways to get good things from this corse. 1. live as close as you can to the campus, the bernard meyers halls are very nice and close and because you dont get your own space, if you have to carry heaps of stuff in every day from a long way its very hard to get good work out of it.
2. Find the communications tutors early. Get your tutors to introduce you to them and be very pushy about getting time with them.
3. If your sure about communications then dont take no for an answer, from the start on each project try to make communications outcomes; dont let the other tutors convince you not to.
4. I think the communications classes are smaller than fashion so it should be a better experience than mine.

Hope that helps!

Yeah i was panicking aswell, but yeah I'm almost definitely going to do Communication, and live relatively near-ish so hopefully all goes well - thanks for the advice  !
