Student life at Southampton University? Finance & Economics
Got an unconditional offer for Finance & Economics from Southampton. It's a dream course and I'm Super happy about it, with just UCL to hear from next.
I had a quick question regarding Student Life at Southampton to those currently living there and those that have finished. What was your overall feeling? (Even in great detail - I would appreciate a lot!)

And also job prospects after the three years of study? Are there many stockbroking/investment management jobs etc. Also did you go abroad to work after finishing?

For info about nightlife you may wish to check out my Freshers' Guide thread for this year (which is reasonably relevant for anyone applying next year too).

As far as job prospects go, many of the second-years (particularly those in finance) look to get internships at places like IBM, PriceWaterhouseCoopers an Deloitte (+many more) to get some useful experience before applying (or at least thinking about it) for jobs in their third year.

Your job prospects will, in general, be about the same as from most Russell Group Universities - as well as at least a 2.1 degree you'll probably be expected to prepare well for interviews/work well in groups etc etc, and some of the businesses actually come to the Uni and do advisory talks to help you get going.

In terms of work abroad, the only people I know of to have gone abroad were those doing Arts-based degrees, and have gone to teach English abroad for a year, rather than settling down to a (more relevant) job in England.

Choose UCL. There is no competition. The extra cost will definitely be worth it when it comes to graduate positions, etc.

Even being at Soton, UCL puts you in a much better position for finance. Unjustified? Probably. But there you go.
