My dad earns like £150k-£180k per year depending on lists & private work ( NHS base pay is much lower than that)

Tax takes about 40% of that though

Im not too sure what he does atm
He's training with Soldiers now, so he might even do Combat Support
I know he trained with Rifles, Vehicles and CS Gas...
It'll probs be for the sake of familiarisation. He may never use half of his army training in practical terms, but it's taught on the off-chance that you need it.

Well my dad not being able to pay his taxes for a couple of months isnt strugglin rite?? The fact that my dad lost a LOT of money in all those shares crashin?? (But thats kinda unrelated...)

But still we are quite a bad state...
A bad state? You're not in a bad state. I find it hard to believe that a consultant would find it difficult to pay for a couple months worth of taxes. If what you say is true, then you shouldn't even be that worried. He has the safest and most reliable job on this planet.

A bad state is when you live in a troubled council estate, attend an awful school, have no real role-models and always having to combat the affects of a deprived community.

To be fair, your chances of actually getting killed when on deployment are quite low, even if you're a regular grunt. Even more so if you're a medical officer and spending most, if not all of your time on base or at home. It's the combat support medics who are on the front lines and risking it the most.

But the 6 years of service is still a huge commitment.
Right....telling that to the Regimental Aid Post surgeon.

Nope. But then I don't think the state should be paying any doctors. By all means become a private doctor and earn loads but don't force taxpayers to pay above real market rates.

    I didn't mean in the economical/political sense.

Regardless of where the money for their salaries is coming from, doctors certainly are not paid too much. They first have to be accepted into what is a ridiculously competitive course (which requires substantial extras beyond perfect grades), then have to start off with higher debt due to longer education, they then have to work long stressful hours saving lives and are continually assessed for years.

I don't even study medicine, nor am I trying to brown-nose, but if there were any people that should be paid more not less, surely it would be doctors? I personally can't think of a more admirable job...

I don't think that makes sense! Go private and earn more, or get paid above market rates by the state. The only market rate to compare to in the UK is he private sector, where as you said they earn more!

Unless of course you advocate ditching the NHS.

Notice how I said 'real' market rates. State payment of medical treatment has distorted private competition for medical care.

Since the public are unlikely to ever pay directly for the services of a doctor - they will still be employed by hospitals, by insurance companies or by GP surgeries - you will never find a 'perfect' free-market price for a doctor.

There are different kinds of doctors, a cardiologist will be getting paid more then GP, one could be private vs NHS which I am guessing will make a difference as well.

Interestingly it is not as simple as that. Due to Private work, initiative lists, profits associated with being a GP partner, it is practically impossible to say who earns what and who earns more when you have reached the top of your career ladder.

Your earnings are far more likely to be influenced by how you choose to work rather than what speciality you are.

Look at the pay bands for the NHS if you want a general idea of salaries

My dads an orthopaedic surgeon on around 85k with 20 years of experience, 9 of which are with the NHS.

My dad doesnt earn much as some of his patients "forget" to pay....
I don't understand. How could patients try not to pay. Are they not legally obliged to pay him?
