I've never learnt VB but after a first year at uni doing Computer Science, it has been really useful for programming in Java and a bit of C. Originally, I had two monitors for web design - code on one, live view on the other. For programming though I've found it useful to have an API on one and the code on the other. Moreover, when messing around with GUI stuff I think most people on my course have valued having some form of dual monitor setup

2 Monitor set up. For coding. I tend to have databases up on one (Or idle tasks when I'm not coding such as Skype/email) The other is for immediate editing/active workspace.
The most I've had at a single point in time was 5. Back when I was mad about flight simulators.
