Hi, guys I know this is quiet a contentious issue, but I am kinda put of Leeds because I have this idea of it being quite a prejudice place. I'm not suggesting that the students are like that, its just the attitude of the locals towards 'ethnic minority students', that I worry about. My Dad went to Leeds and absolutely adored it, but I'm not sure. I'm not asking if everything is absolutely perfect and all races interact with each other, because if they don't its matual. Just wondering what are the locals like and the general vibe of the place.
Basically - Can I live there for three years without worrying too much about racist people and have a great time.
I'm kinda South African, Korean and Irish all mixed together with strange results.
The university is a very white and middle class one. I don't think there's any racism at all (well as little as you could ever have) in the Uni institutions and the Union and I've never come across any on campus apart from the odd BNP supporter you get everywhere.
West Yorkshire is probably a more racist place than average in the UK but nothing to worry about.
Mixed race here myself, yet never ever encountered any form of racism in leeds if i'm honest.
This place is very multicultural, but more than that, you'll find the students here are generally very open minded - and they basically RUN leeds!
The Students union here play a very active part in society in Leeds and they do a great job on Race Relations. The certain issues relating to Race in Leeds that you may have heard of are so far out where your lifes going to revolve, most people here dont even know about it.
It may also help to know that the Students at the university are so pro-culturalism, that it is often them who step forward first when any form of discrimination or prejudice occurs, such as the issue at the moment with Dr Frank Ellis (http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/DrEllis)

Will they also be stepping forward to denounce anti-semitism and homophobia?
The question is whether or not LUU will cease to affliate itself with anti-semitic, homophobic fascists in respect of its efforts to promote tolerance and diversity.
In the meantime, to claim that such views can be ignored because there is a Jewish and LGBT society, is like the BNP claiming "some of my best friends are black".
This is not what I said.
If you have any concerns, then like I said speak to one of the exec officers or bring it up at a Union Council meeting.
I wasn't giving *you* the links, the links are teher so people can see what's on offer. I wasn't giving the links as an answer to your argument. You have added 2 and 2 and came up with 5.
You obviously have a problem with the way the union is doing things, and I suggest you do something about it! None of the union exec or union councillors are going to hear about it here.
I will be the first to admit that I don't know all of the facts and therefore can't give a totally informed opinon. I don't use these boards to argue or debate, I use them to advise people about university.

Vienna isn't at Leeds and probably has never visited our campus and is therefore in no position to make any comments. This is shown by the comments she has made being false.

A lot of the locals are ethnic minority themselves, especially in Hyde Park, but there's no real race-trouble going on here.
Some of the locals don't like students, but its not the ethnic minority students they don't like, its the obnoxious posh types from down south who become attention seeking and lairy on pub crawls.
