Liklihood of Sheffield giving an offer for BA Modern Langauges
    Hi there

I am hoping to apply to BA Modern Languages (French post A level, Russian and Polish from scratch) Could anyone give me any idea about whether Sheffield take on people with two new, related languages? Has anybody else been accepted onto this programme in these circumstances?

The only thing is, is that I am considering a gap year in a Russian speaking country and France. I would only do this if it is not likely I would get an offer anyway.

    Many thanks

    Hi there

    Thanks for your reply.

I know that but when I asked before hand they said they would have reservations about people starting two new similar langauges, but that if the French prediction is acceptable they would likely give an offer. I am not sure what is meant here. I was wondering whther anybody has experianced anything similar or is currently doing the course could explain what it actually meant by this?

I don't think this would be too much of a problem, but I'm obviously not the admissions tutor. I've got an offer for BA Mod Lang, and a couple of months ago, I rang the Modern Languages office and they said (in passing) that people tend to change their combinations of languages anyway. So I don't really it would matter too much?

    Good luck

Hi, I'm currently doing German, Dutch and Polish! You shouldn't have too much of a problem. During enrolment, I was told that issues only tend to arise when there are two brand new languages that are completely dissimilar from both each other AND the post A-level language. For instance, I was originally going to take Spanish rather than Dutch, as I figured I could pick up Dutch on my own if I wanted, but they discouraged me from doing that (and I'm more likely to pick up Spanish externally anyway). The only time having two beginner's languages has been a problem is in combining Polish and Czech - that is currently possible from the second year onwards, but not in the first years, although this may change in future. They do allow you to sample both languages for the first three weeks ("trial period") before you decide, however, although you still have to sign up for one.

The only problem you'll ever stumble upon is accidentally using Russian instead of Polish or vice versa, enough people have done it in my class already! If you have any questions about Polish, please ask.

Thanks a lot for that reply! It is great to get information from someone who is actually doing the course. How are you finding Polish? Is it quite intense, and is it as hard grammatically as people say? I have been doing bits and pieces of the langauge in free time.

    Dziękuję bardzo!
