Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park?

- Weston Hall -
My advice is to avoid this place, it's overly priced and dingy. I can't say I agree with the crime story, as the university's security team is based just across the road.
The student life here is what you make of it, if like me you prefer not to go clubbing all the time, then you'll like this place as it's mostly quite quiet here, and you can just spend your nights with your mates in the common room having a laugh etc.
And if you do want to go out, Weston Hall is in the city centre and just around the corner from a few clubs. -
Re: Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park?
I live in Weston Hall right now and it's alright. It was my last choice and I was really disappointed when I got the email saying I was staying here. My first choices were Sheavyn house/richmond park.
Good Points:
You can walk to uni in 15 minutes or catch the bus for free. As for someone saying you walk by the motorway, you don't. There's a short walk beside the mancunian way on a pedestian path. It really isn't an issue, I enjoy the walk. The queues for buses in Fallowfield go round the corner in the mornings, and at night. Most of the time.
Huge common room for 8 people with sofas, table etc. You host a big party in one common room easily.
Close to Picadilly and Oxford road train station (good for me anyway because i go home a lot)
Very close to town and clubs like Factory, Joshua Brooks, 5th Avenue etc and within walking distance from Deansgate where tiger tiger is etc and walking distance of Sankeys
I have never witnessed any crime at all. I feel very safe walking round Manchester at night
Reception 5 days a week makes it easy to pick up parcels
Close walk to Arndale centre with 240 shops
Bad Points
Rooms are small and overpriced, you're paying for the location
You really do have to make an effort to socialise. Freshers week was sociable but it just gradually wears off
It sounds bad that is is a bad point but it is ~50% maybe more international students. The vast majority are understandably shy. I can go a week without seeing one person from my flat but luckily ive made friends around my halls and im living in a lovely 8 bed house next year.
This has only happened once but once when we were having pre drinks and playing loud music security came round and had a go at us saying we should be respectful because were next to a hotel.
With it being close to the city centre the supermarkets tend to be "express" or "metros" so theyre quite expensive. However I just walk 15 minutes to Aldi.
--------------------
Overall i would not recommend anyone to stay here that does not like spending time on their own. Luckily I do, and i would hate to have been in a flat where people were constantly banging on my doors and guilt tripping me into socialising when i really had to get on with work. But it does get really lonely.
However going to Fallowfield doesn't suddenly mean you're going to have an amazing social life. My boyfriend lives in OH and his flat never really "clicked". My coursemate moved to richmond park from OP (OP was too noisy) and it is nice there but he still prefers to go home at the weekend. Whenever i have stayed in OH it has been very noisy, as in ive been kept up til 5am.
Sheavyn house is meant to be really good. It's got the right balance of a social life and being just out of fallowfield so its a bit quieter. It is really competitive though, a lot of people in weston hall said, like me, they applied to sheavyn but didnt get in.
If you dont get to stay where you want, you can change fairly easily. Two friends I made left weston hall to go to owens park because they wanted to be catered. Also you get to move into a house in second year which is better than any halls
Hope this helps

Re: Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park?Would you by any chance have any pictures of your room at Sheavyn? I applied there and i'm just really curious.. thanks in advanced :P(Original post by fretter778)
I do
I'll agree with the rest of the people that the rooms are great and it's a nice place to be. It seems very sociable unless you have the people in my flat. Got a couple of 3rd years and people who are always off out elsewhere with other people. Guess I just got unlucky. I'm not that fussed though. -
Re: Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park?If I remember to post one tomorrow I will (I've kinda just got in from a night out). That's if I clean the room to what I deem acceptable to post online(Original post by aprilannep)

Re: Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park? They're definitely on the larger side. My room is crammed full of stuff and I still have room. If I didn't have my guitar and stuff lying on the floor it would be a lot more spacious. I've managed to have 3 people sleeping on the room with a bit of room to spare.(Original post by aprilannep)

Attached a picture of my room too just for good measure, since I know people have asked in the past.

Re: Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park?Ooh . . . do you think I could use those photos in the Accommodation FAQ? The link's in my sig, if you want to take a look. A short (100-150 words) piece on what it's like to live there would also be much appreciated, and both would be fully credited.(Original post by fretter778)

Re: Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park?
I currently live in Sheavyn, and it is a great hall in terms of ticking parents boxes: green open spaces, modern decor in rooms and communal area/ kitchen, very safe and somewhat secluded from the Fallowfield Frenzy (ashburne, Sheavyn and Richmond are all on the outside of the fallowfield campus).
however in terms of socialising it has not been great. Freshers was amazing reps definitely gave us a week to remember however, as you live in flats you are limited to only 8/9 people in the flat and frankly once freshers week is over you have missed the opportunity to make your flat known as the 'social flat'. THere are a lot second and third years in sheavyn along with gap year students who are 19/20 when starting uni so the environment is slightly different due to their experiences so far at uni or on their gap year. Unless you have an outgoing personality, Sheavyn probably similar could be said about en suite accommodation, can become quite a lonely place. Especially if some of your flatmates are medics, dentists or engineers (they will get really close really quickly with their course mates rather than their flat).
AND...
it just depends who you actually live with. Some flats are really close which is great but there are equally loads of flats that don't talk have never spoken since freshers etc.
If you do get en suite, your gonna have to join societies and participate in them a lot more to increase your network of friends. Sheavyners are mainly students from middle class background/ education, so some can come across aloof and sound condescending when the speak (after a few weeks that facade will go). -

Would you then say Sheavyn is good for those who like a quieter environment but want to stay in Fallowfield?(Original post by chanchan)

Re: Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park?Possibly. The fact still remains Sheavyn is in Fallowfield which means if you want a 'quieter environment' City or Victoria Park campus maybe for you. That said during the exam season there is a zero tolerance on noise and disruption (no loud music, parties etc after 11pm) and generally everyone respects it. Even though it is only first year the fact is Sheavyners do revise hard!! So in terms of it affecting your studies this will not occur.(Original post by Maerzin)

However, my flat (and a few others) are not quiet in the slightest and I was a very quiet and private person when I began university (a lot has changed throughout the year).
To be fair the walls are pretty sound proof so you shouldn't hear to much of your flatmate antics if you're not into socialising by drinking and partying, (unless they open the kitchen door). Finally, freshers in general tend to quieten down as the year progresses and many tend to have 'big nights out' ie end of term parties, after exams parties, city invasions or go to Parklife or Pangea. Though they are expensive it is defo good days/nights out. Instead of the 'Pout on Mondays', 'Revs on Tuesdays', 'Juicy on wednesdays' etc (it gets very boring and repetitive.
Just to reiterate, your flatmates will have a big influence on whether Fallowfield is quiet for you. So be prepared for it to go either way. Remember if you don't like it people do change halls. -
Re: Social life in Sheavyn House, Weston Hall and Richmond Park?I guess I'll just have to wait and find out then. I really like Fallowfield as it seems to give some experience of a campus in a mainly city-based university. Plus the accommodation looked better to me compared to City for some reason. I do have one choice in Victoria though.(Original post by chanchan)
