Re: 2013 History Applicants!I'm looking at joint honours with English so at the moment I want to look around(Original post by Kimiechi)
Oxford/Cambridge, Durham, St Andrews, Edinburgh, Nottingham/Glasgow/Lancaster (depends whether I decide to do normal History or Ancient and Modern). Ideally I'd like to specialise in American history, but I'm interested in loads of other areas too
what about you?
East Anglia
Southampton
Queen Mary
Cardiff
Nottingham
Liverpool
Leeds
Reading -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!Hey, possibly considering doing History and possibly with Politics as a joint degree. Where I apply depends on my AS grades although I'm considering somewhere like Leeds at the minute.(Original post by EloiseStar)
Where have you considered applying for?
-
Re: 2013 History Applicants!Yeah! Same here, I'm predicted A/B across all my subjects, however in English and History, they believe that this is a minimum, as for Biology and Maths, I'll probably get a C or a B if I'm very very very lucky! I could probably get A/A* at the end of A2 for Eng/His but getting the other grade up will be a struggle :'((Original post by pink pineapple)

Will I be seeing you at the Leeds open day?

Re: 2013 History Applicants!I looked at Southampton and Cardiff from that list, but Southampton is really far away from where I live, and Cardiff doesn't offer any American history modules(Original post by EloiseStar)

Leeds is nice, but a little too close to home for me unfortunately.

I've given this list to my parents and they have kind of mulled it over; none of the universities are too far away!
Hopefully my list will become shorter next year. What AS levels have you taken? (if you don't mind me asking) -
Re: 2013 History Applicants! From my rather short list, Leeds is asking for AAA, and anything higher is expected from places such as UCL.(Original post by soindie)
Where should I look at with these "possible" grades: AS - AAAB and A2 - A*A(*)A. Also, what A Levels you guys doing?
You may find this useful, as despite being the 2012 version (as 2013 is yet to be released) you can get a rough idea:

I'm taking AS English literature, Maths, Biology and History. Next year I will either drop Biology or Maths. -
Re: 2013 History Applicants! My parents like the sound of Durham, since it's fairly nearby. York and Leeds are even closer, but I don't want to be living too close to home, I'd like to live somewhere new, not somewhere I've been around all my life. (Unlike my brother, he's the opposite!)(Original post by EloiseStar)

I take English Lit, English Lang, History, French and IB Beginner's Spanish (don't worry, no one ever knows what it is, it's basically GCSE, but slightly different :/) -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!Sounds interesting!(Original post by Kimiechi)

I have ruled out Birmingham on the basis that it is too close to home and I wouldn't be able to stop in student residences. My dad brought this issue up with me as he wants me to enjoy uni, and socialise and he believes staying away from home is the best bit (he never got to go at all).
I'm so glad that I've found more 2013 potential applicants! I hope I get to meet some of you at the open days!
Has any one been to 'taster sessions'? Many universities near by have been offering some but the majority are for Psychology, Journalism and Politics. -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!PS- how are you enjoying Lit. and History? What modules have you been doing?(Original post by Kimiechi)

Re: 2013 History Applicants!I'm sorry but I don't know... you'll have to research that yourself(Original post by soindie)
I'm doing History, Politics, French and English Lit. I want to drop French! Which top universities offer a lot of freedom in modules/mainly modern modules (I'm not particularly interested in medieval history)

Re: 2013 History Applicants! That's almost exactly what my dad said (he never went to uni either)!!(Original post by EloiseStar)

Yeah, it's good to talk to other people who share my enthusiasm for History, my school is literally full of scientists and engineers, except for me and my best friend
I haven't heard of any taster sessions going on near me, but I don't really live near many unis except leeds and york unis... I'm going to have a google now....
As for Lit and History, in Lit we have been doing coursework on A Streetcar Named Desire and Othello, I've finished my Othello piece but have to do my Streetcar over the holidays
we've also started to move on to Aspects of Narrative, with Thomas Hardy poems and The Kite Runner. It's been a bit chaotic, tbh, what with the problems we had with the Streetcar coursework questions meaning we've ended up writing two coursework pieces simultaneously, as well as starting on the next module. Argh!!
In History it's much more relaxed (almost too relaxed, tbh). We study Churchill, and Germany 1919-63. The class is tiny though, since History (and all essay subjects) are so unpopular at my sixth form. The teachers aren't too good, unfortunately, though
every single person in the A2 class is resitting at least one module! It doesn't bode well.... -__-

Re: 2013 History Applicants! You can do degrees in solely Modern History, try UCAS course search, I don't know any off the top of my head sicne I'm quite interested in medieval stuff so it's not something I've really looked into.(Original post by soindie)

Re: 2013 History Applicants!I'm guessing from that we're not on the same exam board! I'm studying 'Top Girls', 'A Doll's House' and 'Spies' in English and in History we're studying Imperial Russia as well as Britain 1815-55(ish- give or take a few years).(Original post by Kimiechi)

I'm surrounded by universities- wish I could get away sometimes. -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!
I'm hoping to apply for a joint honours in English Literature and History at:
- Durham
- York
- Exeter
- Nottingham
- Lancaster/Sussex/UEA/Sheffield/Leeds/possibly elsewhere
It would be nice to get AAAA at AS. I study English Lit, History, Politics and Sociology, and expect to drop Sociology after AS because it's ever so slightly mind numbing.
I'm writing my Lit coursework at the moment on A Streetcar Named Desire, and Hamlet. Afterwards, I'll be moving onto aspects of narrative with The Great Gatsby, Birdsong, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and assorted Hardy poems. I'm aiming to get 30/30 for both of my c/w pieces, which will hopefully compensate for my often poor exam results.
I'm sitting sociology and politics exams in January, which (without trying to sound arrogant) should both be As, questions permitting.
If I get amazing UMS at the end of AS (which I doubt) I might half-consider Cambridge, but I doubt it. -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!AQA B for me, I think. I don't remember seeing those books on the spec, so probably not.(Original post by EloiseStar)

I wish we could study more interesting stuff in history like that, I have done Germany and the world wars waaaay too much, it's awful -__-
I've just goggled the taster sessions things, they don't seem to do them at Leeds, but York have some in March, but it's too early to book. I don't want to go to York (don't like the course) but it's nearby, so that's good.
I wish I lived near more universities, cos then you could go for visits and stuff. All i live near is fields (that's Yorkshire for you :/) -

You're the first person (other than myself) to post about joint Literature and History!
