University course discussion for history.

Re: 2013 History Applicants!I recommend going to the taster sessions- I've done Media before and that was unusual but I really wanted to do Law instead. Let me know if you find any good ones(Original post by Kimiechi)
AQA B for me, I think. I don't remember seeing those books on the spec, so probably not.
I wish we could study more interesting stuff in history like that, I have done Germany and the world wars waaaay too much, it's awful -__-
I've just goggled the taster sessions things, they don't seem to do them at Leeds, but York have some in March, but it's too early to book. I don't want to go to York (don't like the course) but it's nearby, so that's good.
I wish I lived near more universities, cos then you could go for visits and stuff. All i live near is fields (that's Yorkshire for you :/)

Re: 2013 History Applicants!Archives work at a national library and also work at a newspaper. I'm not going to bother with a museum to be honest.(Original post by EloiseStar)
Has anyone got any History related work experience/enrichment? -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!I was thinking about doing History and Lit. but Durham is waaaay too far away from home, and there aren't any other really reputed universities which I'd actually want to go to that offer it.. *sad face*(Original post by EloiseStar)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! *excuse freak out!*
You're the first person (other than myself) to post about joint Literature and History! -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!Quite a few Russell Group universities offer it(Original post by soindie)

Re: 2013 History Applicants!Same, hoping with alot of hard work to get A/B in history,Politics and English Lit. With French which is the subject I'm currently planning to drop I should get a C in or at a push a B. Possibly going to look, not sure yet(Original post by EloiseStar)
Yeah! Same here, I'm predicted A/B across all my subjects, however in English and History, they believe that this is a minimum, as for Biology and Maths, I'll probably get a C or a B if I'm very very very lucky! I could probably get A/A* at the end of A2 for Eng/His but getting the other grade up will be a struggle :'(
Will I be seeing you at the Leeds open day?

Re: 2013 History Applicants!Exactly same! A s for His. Pol and Lit., but might get a B for French..(Original post by pink pineapple)

Re: 2013 History Applicants!I won't be the last. It's a fantastic combination. The two disciplines link so closely and beautifully that it just demands academic attention(Original post by EloiseStar)

Which period of literary history interests you the most?
I'm quite taken by post WW2 American Lit, but then I'm doing an EPQ on medieval Norse Lit and its influence on folklore... -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!
Mature student here.
I originally planned to apply for English at university this year, but having studied it at my local college, I steadily became aware that I just couldn't envisage myself studying it for three years. So a change of plan — a gap year, namely, and a different subject, which, I think you can guess, is history. Absolutely love it, particularly histriography, I've discovered.
There are no universites to which I'm certain about applying. I shall try to visit as many open days as I possibly can and then take it from there, I think. Also, it depends how well I do with regard to my college work.
I only live about two miles away from my local history centre, so I'll certainly look into gaining some work experience there — if they permit that kind of thing, that is.Last edited by DisconcertingWink1; 24-12-2011 at 19:52. -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!Oxford do offer it: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/under..._englis_4.html(Original post by soindie)
I know. Nottingham appeals, but Oxford and Bristol don't offer it :/
As for work experience, I'm going to try and get work experience at local museum-y things over summer, if possible. There's a castle near where I live, but the museum bit is pathetically small, so I don't know whether they'll take me on :s -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!Oxford offer about 5 places a year though.. I doubt that would be me!(Original post by Kimiechi)

Oxford offer about 5 places a year though.. I doubt that would be me!
a success rate of 9.3% is pretty off-putting though - compared to 26% for straight History.

Re: 2013 History Applicants!WW2; from the historical view its so interesting to see not only the British view point (which I grew up with, having grandparents who were children during the war) but also how the war affected the allies and people in Nazi-occupied countries.(Original post by JollyGreenAtheist)

Also, the literature produced during that time is rather amazing, as with most post-modern novels! -
Re: 2013 History Applicants!I don't know any books of the top of my head, but some universities have recommended book lists which prospective students can look over to get a feel of the course specific to that university and the modules which they offer.(Original post by SSDD95)
Hi fellow historians
I'm mostly interested in 19th/20th Century British and European history, has anyone got any suggestions for books that I should have a look at?
If they do it, it will either be on the subject's individual sub-website (linked off the main page) or on the specific course which you're interested in.
