University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13
Couldn't find a current thread for peeps applying to York to do Postgraduate study, forgive me if there is already one somewhere...
Anywho, has anybody on here applied for posgrad there?
I'm finishing my English Literature & History undergraduate at Northumbria, and I applied for the MA in Modern & Contemporary Literature at the end of November.
I'm working at an upper 2:1 and will most probably finish with that, aided with a couple of strong references, two of my best samples of written work (Essays on Modernism and James Joyce's Ulysses therefore very relevant to the department) I'm still awaiting a decision, although I presume it won't be until into the new year until I receive one now. I really hope I get offered a place (and hope the fees don't drastically rise!), what do others think?
Is anyone else applying/applied to/studying at York at Postgraduate level?
Specifically English?
Would be nice to here from others applying so discuss. -

Hi, just so you know, I'm also applying but I have little time to say anything as I'm currently breaking down. But you're not alone!
What are you applying to study? -
Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13
I've gotten a conditional offer for MSc Human-Centred Interactive Technologies. I'm an international student (from the University of Oslo), and it's not all that easy to compare the "2:1" type system to our grades, but my condition is getting a B or better.
I was really surprised to have come this far, considering all paperwork needed for the UK universities, which I had no experience with (in Norway, you send in your grades and desired courses / universities for undergrad, and those with the best grades are chosen. Postgrad-wise, the people with the best grades and personal statement-ish letter will be accepted).
I applied the 8th of November, and got my offer details 10 days later. No interview, presumably because I'm an international student. -
Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13Maybe a bit of an overstatement, I was just frustrated with scanners in the library. In fact I needed them to scan my transcripts for my applications, which becomes even more awkward when they need to be less than 1 or 2MB. I'm applying for the MA in English Literary Studies, looks excellent.

Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13Good luck applying. I'm applying for the MA in Medieval English Literatures, application sent off last week. I'm an undergrad at York and my supervisor said they normally start processing english applications from feb onwards. If you're interested in Ulysses there are some outstanding professors here - if you want any advice on supervisors and topics send me a PM.(Original post by lowradiation)

Also, could I ask how you managed to upload your grade transcripts? I scanned mine in but they're 18, nearly 19mb and you can only upload a maximum of 1MB. I've tried converting it to a .zip but no luck there. I imagine there's really quite a simple way of doing this but I'm stumped. -
Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13Just checked, mine was only like 100 odd KB.(Original post by bretj89)

Basically I got a print out from my school office, scanned it in our uni library which then emailed it straight to me in PDF form. Saved it to my comp then uploaded it in my application and it was fine. Hope that helps, I didn't know any other way!Last edited by lowradiation; 20-12-2011 at 18:14. -
Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13Ah now that has rested me a little, sort of been waiting day by day for a decision as I've known some Postgrad applications take a matter of weeks to be decided on. But I suppose different departments different methods.(Original post by Aeschylus)

I'll be sure to ask about Profs if I get in, since I'll be doing the core class in the Modern School which includes Ulysses, and I can see myself doing my thesis in that. Funnily enough, what attracted me to York was the explanation of the modules online, as you could actually download and look at some of the module schedules and reading lists (obviously things could change for next year) but I thought it was excellent how they provided that info.
What kind of writing samples did you both supply? I just threw in my best essays, which I think should be good enough, and they are both on extremely relevant topics for the York Modern School. -
Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13I just got it sorted but thanks for the help, now that this is aside perhaps we could talk more about the application.(Original post by lowradiation)

Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13I was similarly impressed by being able to look at the reading lists for the year, it was comforting to know what you would be studying rather than just a general statement describing the course. I used my essay about Yeats and one about the Theatre of the Absurd, both did well and the Theatre of the Absurd offered much better subject matter to read.(Original post by lowradiation)

Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13
Sound good, I used a generic (but particularly strong and fairly original) essay on Modernism with a bit of Joyce, Woolf and Ford. Then I used 1,500 word close textual analysis on the opening page of Ulysses which I had to do in my module, that one is a little different and both certainly fit in with what I'm applying for. Hopefully will pull me through!

Re: University of York Postgrad Applicants 2012/13
Bump.
Now the new year's well under way, wondered if anyone had heard anything/ got any further with their applications?
Mine's still under consideration, but I'm no expecting a decision until into Feb/March now. Panicked and applied to a couple of other courses at Durham and Northumbria (where I am now).
Horrible waiting game to be playing, best concentrate on my dissertation and actual work I suppose!
