Do you even remember playing in the CL? It's the highlight of every club that plays in it.
The theme tune, the Wednesday nights, the players on show. It's the greatest show on Earth. I'd take it every day of the week over the F.A. cup or League cup.

Re: The Arsenal Thread XI
You'd rather play 10+ more matches than win the FA cup?
Oooook. Just answer me this, which are people going to remember in 100 years?
I remember us winning it actually. I remember us setting the record 8-0 win too I think. Do you remember winning it? Great feeling isn't it as the underdogs and all. Especially when coming back from 3-0.(Original post by Hantheman)

Re: The Arsenal Thread XI
This was one of Arsenal's toughest games left. The away form has not been good this season and not many teams go to Goodison and win. This was a big result. Rode our luck with the linesman for the disallowed Everton goal but then Rosicky was bundled over in the box that should've been given as a penalty. The officiating was poor all-round but Arsenal definitely had the edge.
Koscielny and Vermaelen were excellent. Sagna, too. Tactically I don't think Wenger got it right at all. Arsenal weren't able to stamp any authority on the game and cause many problems for Everton after the opening exchanges because there weren't any runners to pick out. Van Persie, surprisingly, had a poor game in front of goal. Had one saved low down that he normally buries from 12 yards out. And the one where he hit the post -- he had half the net to pick out. Ramsey also missed a great chance.
It was a real scrap out there today and not for the first time in recent weeks, they've grinded out a win. Can't really argue with WWWWWW against Blackburn, Sunderland, Tottenham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Everton. -
Re: The Arsenal Thread XILiverpool have just offered me a contract after seeing me walk my dog, they said my ability to keep hold of a lead was worth every penny(Original post by Jim-Jam)
Don't know why you're jumping about being in the top 4, you're never going to win the CL are you? Just competing year after year for nothing.
Seriously, why can't Wenger see you should just push on and win a trophy. -
Re: The Arsenal Thread XI
I actually can't believe that after 8 - 2, 4 - 3, 4 - 0 Ac Milan, 3 -2 Swansea and the leaky as hell, shaky defense and over reliance on RVP that Arsenal are actually in contention for third place. It really just shows how distinctly average and currently pathetic Liverpools season has been. I'm distraught right now but I am happy for Arsenal. I'd like to see Chelsea not get top four but what I want never happens

I want to pull my hair out! If only we had an RVP! Absolute superhero.
But i'd like to point out that Arsenal fans trying to diminish an FA cup and Carling Cup double as an accomplishment sound distinctly bitter and childish. It's always an accomplishment to win silverware and tbh it's a greater high than simply achieving fourth place. History doesn't remember that. Only who won the cups. But admittedly the cup runs do not overturn our shambolic league form. With our luck, I fully expect us to end up with Chelsea in the final. 1 - 1 in the 87th minute only for Torres to score the winner. Kicking us where it hurts the most. -
Re: The Arsenal Thread XI
Thinking about it -- it means Vermaelen has scored the winner in the last 2 league games, effectively gaining us 4 points in a week. For Arsenal league games, he has 12 goals in 58 games. And he took up positions out wide on the left quite a few times in attack. He does get forward a fair bit and you can see him maintaining that sort of record. I wonder if there has been a CB in the English league that has kept a better than 1-in-5 goalscoring record. There has probably been a CB that has taken penalties but discounting that, he must be up there. Can't really put a price on his determination and effort levels.

What you are forgetting is as a football fan! we watch it for the basic reason to be entertained. Watching the champions league is super entertaining and the atmosphere is sublime....it is the greatest show on earth and waiting for the 7.45 kick offs every wednesday or tuesday is just so exciting i cant even describe. Of course i would love arsenal to win trophy but it will come eventually and i can wait i am not glory hunter.
noiw think about it:
cl: play against best teams in world and best players on show. most matches are mesmerising and memorable.
carling cup: couple of matches against low end teams, usually boring matches with no atmosphere. Even the cup looks a bit ****e.
At the end of the day even though as footballing fans we are part of the footballing family but when the team wins a trophy they don't send us a medal in the post do they? Our prime reason for watching football is because it is a great sport and we want to see our team in great matches with lots of atmosphere and against the best sides. Thats what the champions league brings and thats why i think most people would choose it over a fa cup or carling cup win. -
Re: The Arsenal Thread XI
Anyway, Jim-Jam is a child who is frustrated with Liverpool's loss and decided to spout garbage on here. And well done all for giving him that attention.
Any sort of cup run is great. The more prestigious the competition, the better, obviously. You can't put the FA Cup in the same bracket as the Carling Cup. But we really enjoyed Arsenal's Carling Cup run last season and it is exciting to win a final at Wembley. But in terms of progress, cup competitions -- particularly the Carling Cup where quite a few of the top sides field weakened teams and don't regard it as a priority -- are not the best indicator of how good a team is. Birmingham City won the Carling Cup last year, yet Arsenal would not want to swap places with them. The league has been, and always will be, the best indicator of the quality of a team.
It'd be great to win cup competitions and I think there is merit in the idea that, had Arsenal won the Carling Cup last year, it might have given more momentum and confidence to finish the job in one of the major trophies they were competing in. But whatchagonnado. The team is playing well right now and has recorded some fantastic results in tricky games recently and the fans are going to enjoy that. Liverpool fans are welcome to watch replays of their Carling Cup win if it makes them feel better. I don't see the need to compare (mis)fortunes. -
Re: The Arsenal Thread XITouché.
Sure, we've had a bad run the last few years, but we still need to be in the CL, not only for the chance to win it and have big games like the Milan one, but for the money (unfortunately necessary these days) to buy and keep players so that we can challenge in the league. It is a bit frustrating being on the edge of competitiveness but I'd still take the consistency over fluctuating in and out of the CL and the occasional domestic cup.(Original post by Jim-Jam)
But you misunderstood, I want you to do well. At the moment though, in the CL every year and still not winning everything, doesn't it seem a bit pointless? A domestic trophy is what you need. You're not improving and haven't been at all since 06. -
Re: The Arsenal Thread XIDon't get us wrong, we as Arsenal fans would love to win a trophy regardless of it's stature but that has to coincide with decent league runs. You can't win a cup and end up 8th missing out on the Champions league. Football at the moment is about sustainability for us and we are doing very well in that department. We have a new stadium, top 4 once again and we finally have generated a decent transfer kitty to take us from top 4 to title contenders.(Original post by lifeshard)

We will always win trophies, that is the whole point of what we've been doing, to be able to win trophies over the next 20-30 years rather than the next 2-3 years.
