    String around stomach
I was reading on a fitness blog that it was possible to get a more toned stomach and build up your TVA muscles by tying string around your stomach all day, forcing you to tense in these stomach.

Something tells me that this is not a healthy or an effective way to achieve this. Has anybody ever tried this or have any knowledge about whether this is an appropriate method?

    Many Thanks

Haha, I'm not asking because I've got a belly and I'm wanting to do it, I'm just wondering whether it is safe for people to do.

I would hate for you to think I was letting my country down.

People are always looking for quick and easy fixes.

Vibration belts, acai berry diets, shakerweights... the guys behind all these schemes know that people are lazy and want to get quick results without putting in any effort. The truth is that when it comes to anything fitness related, no effort = no results. Tying a string around your stomach to try and "tone it" is exactly the same kind of idea... trying to get results without putting any effort in.

(oh and please dont say the word "toned" again, its such a failure of a word)

Call me a tit if you like mate but the bottom line is that there is a strong correlation between these non-conventional (and honestly: useless) techniques and fat people who are trying to lose weight but failing.

Same as the correlation between desperate poor people and the suckers in most get-rich-quick schemes.

Can't really deny that in all awareness.

Sounds like a waste of time and pretty uncomfortable. I'll stick with pumping iron and eating healthy to bring out my abs

Yes, this is an appropriate method.
And it will work. And anyone saying this is a 'quick fix' or 'easy way out' obviously havent tried this exercise.

This is another form of exercise to work you Traverse Abdominis. Which helps you pull your core in, giving you a flat stomache. It wont build 'Abs' as such, but helps create a flatter stomach.

If your looking for a 'Six Pack Look', a healthy diet, Crunches, Cadio and this will help generate that look.

For anyone doubting this Exercise, the string is there to act as a reminder to pull your stomach in. This type of work out is the same theory used in ' The Plank'.

how can something that is taking the strain off the muscle make the muscle stronger?

I think you're talking about the 'vacuum pose'. I become obsessed with this a few months ago and tried it for one hour every day for 10 days. I can't say that small amount of time did anything major to my body. Hmm, I might try and experiment with this again.

I think the idea is you have to pull your abs in otherwise the string will dig into them and hurt.

You definitely won't lose fat but if pulling your abs in in the first place builds some kind of strength, then the idea might have some merit.

As stated above, the theory is based on the vacuum pose but almost continuous. Really you shouldnt keep it on all the time only during, say work or shopping. Also as stated you shouldnt feel the string hurt or tense when in the proper posture.
If you are going to try this you must breath out and pull your stomach in so it is comfortably tight then put the string so lt is comfortable at this tension. Then when you relax you should feel the strong tighten reminding you to tense up. Obviously if the string is hurting you - loosen it.
In my experience it has helped tighten the Transver abdominal. This will not build abs or help you loose far. It's an exercise to work the muscle used to gain a flat stomach.
