Re: The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support and Discussion ThreadI feel like I HAVE to make notes though, or it doesn't feel right and bothers me(Original post by kayleigh.jean)
How about not doing lots of notes, but do a few past papers open book so you can revise as you go along and then you'll gradually get better and not need the books/notes? that's what I do otherwise I'd never get onto past papers!
you'll be fine though
awww, that's a very good friend xD it's one of my favourite pon & zi type pictures :')
She's a very good friend
We've been together a month(Original post by popple7)
ooooooh new boyfriend?
you're a fast worker lady! hahaha good on ya girl! how have you been since we last spoke? it's been ages, im sorry! i dont know where the time is going, it's just flying by!
how come you are being taken off your meds?! i hope you get things sorted with the doc and counselling and whatnot.
ooohh trichsters, dont judge me but my guilty pleasure is the dailymail... and found this article the other day, sam from TOWIE has trichotillomania too!l i know she's a z-lister... but i really admire her having the courage to admit to it and discuss it openly... even if she is desperate for any publicity to promote her new book
still, i was genuinely impressed at her honesty.
as for me! the cycle continues. good times and bad. think im about to enter one of my bad phases. left eyebrow has took another beating.. and some lashes. my lashes are finally normal though, so i really cant **** them up again. i just cant.
let me know how you all are fellow trichsters, not heard from you all in ages! hope you're all well. and you lovely OCDers too!
hope the compulsions and thoughts arent too dominating and rituals arent taking too much of your time/energy

I came off them myself
I felt they weren't working and just made me TOO much better and then suddenly REALLY not better at all
How's the trich going now hun?

do i have ocd?
So this may sound silly, but I'm beginning to wonder if I have ocd and what I can do about it.
I will do things like check I have turned a light off at night many times, getting in bed and getting out to make sure its off, I worry really badly about my hair straighteners and even have to call my mum to tell me that they're off so I can relax and other things like when I leave the house, I have to lock the door, check it and then I'll get like ten minutes away from the house and have to walk back and recheck it.
Sorry if this sounds all stupid, just wondering :/ -
Re: do i have ocd?
people nowadays believe they have all forms of disorders. they do a few tests online and boom; depression, addiction etc.
to give you an example of ocd: someone who washes his hands a 100 times a day until they start bleeding. or somebody who won't use a plate, glass, fork etc twice because he is afraid of bacteria.
you problems sound rather minor but please see a psychiatrist. if it is really an ocd it will worsen over time. also, symptoms of ocd may last indefinitely
good luck -
Re: do i have ocd?
it does sound like you have some symptom of OCD , but to get a proper diagnose of OCD , you have to have a set of requirment to fit and it have to significantly effect your life while you clearly know it is irrational and uncontrable . (compulsive or obessive )
not all OCD will worsen , but it is ideal to see your GP regarding this ,dont worry .they prob wouldnt even refer you to Psych or CMHT , but if you are being refer ,please be prepare for months of waiting . i think even if a diagnosis will be given it is still a very mild case atm .
a low dose of anti depressent would prob do you some good,it would be worth mentioning to your gp if it worry you so much .
good luck .

Re: The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support and Discussion Thread
OCD is wasting so much of my revision time. I'm trying to revise now without making so much notes but I can't help it, I know I will finish everything if I just read and make no notes but the impulse to make continuous notes in the exact way is really making it difficult to do that

Re: do i have ocd?Well they are obsessive traits. But no one can diagnose you here. If you feel the symptoms are causing you problems in life or are distressing you speak to your GP. If not, don't worry about it but just keep an eye on them to make sure they don't cause problems for you

Re: The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support and Discussion ThreadHey guys. Just to say that starting tomorrow I will not be active at all on TSR for a few weeks, or be rarely active (like once a week, but it's unlikely I'll be on at all) for various reasons I don't want to go into here, but I'm just letting everyone know. I know some members have already said it's a bad idea whilst some have understood, but I have my reasons and it's unlikely I will change my mind. As my user title says you can leave me a msg (by VM is preferable but if it's more personal then leave me a PM if you want to). Take care everyone and when I'm back I'll carry on doing the normal things I do like helping out and posting and such. Much love

Edit: Just adding that it will be much the same with Skype, MSN and other means just like it will be with TSR, for those who have other methods of contacting me. I will keep my phone with me though for those who want to text me (that have my numbers). This will all be starting tomorrow. -
Re: The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support and Discussion Thread
Today I've been diagnosed with OCD. I have offers from UCL and York and waiting for my examination results. Do you think I should request extenuating circumstances from these unis? I don't want to gain advantage over other people because of sth I cannot influence in any way, but I suppose that this disorder spoiled my revision to examination...
Thanks in advance

Does this sound like OCD?
Do I have OCD symptoms?
I think I may have 'minor' OCD, but I'm not sure.
-Basically I feel the need to touch things all the time, which is annoying in school because I'm there touching my pen 100 (sometimes 200) times before I can start writing, while everyone else has already started.
-Plus I always have to have one side of me feeling exactly the same as the other side. So, for example, If my right hand is cold, my left hand has to be the exact same temperature. It's also the same for textures, which usually means touching things with both hands. And if someone touches my arm, for example, then I have to touch my other arm. Not sure why, it just feels right that way.
-And occasionally I also have to switch the light on and off three times, but not all the time; only when I think about it.
-I also have to keep things really neat. So, for example, in school when we get new homework books I always lay it out perfectly using a ruler, and add in an extra section (for when the homework is due). At first I thought this was normal because it was simply for convenience, but I've started to do it for days that I'm not even in school. It just has to be like that.
-I'm not really that tidy (no more than normal) and I don't have to wash an abnormal amount of time. I don't have to collect things like receipts either, so there's nothing wrong there.
-But I do get constantly worried about getting ill, so I will do things like look up symptoms (and nearly always relate them to myself) which gets really annoying.
The way I stop this is usually just avoiding anything that could make me ill, for example, I have to eat a citrus fruit everyday without exceptions so as not to get scurvy.
-I also sometimes plan what I'm going to do before I do it, so, for example, I usually plan exactly how I'm going to get dressed, and if I don't do it in that order then I undress and re-do it again until it is right. For example, putting trousers on before t-shirt.
-I also quite often read a question about 5 times before I can answer, because I am scared that I have read it wrong - but this may be normal because I only want to make sure that I don't make mistakes.
-And I also sometimes read a line in a book over and over again because I'm scared that I will not take in all the information.
-This also sometimes happens when someone is talking to me - I'll repeat what they're saying over and over so I fully take in what they are saying.
-I also have things that aren't habits, but more thoughts.
-Like I constantly doubt whether I really like someone - which has previously caused a lot of friendship trouble and minor depression.
-I also get scared that I like one parent more than the other - even though I don't. And I get really scared that they know what I'm thinking and then they'll get really upset.
-I don't really have any religious obsessions because I am atheist, but I do occasionally have ridiculous thoughts about kissing my best (female) friend, even though I am straight and don't like her in that way at all.
-Sometimes I can't get to sleep because I constantly think about a person I know dying - and the only way I can reassure myself is to perform CPR in my head for hours, and rehearse exactly what I would do.
-Before bed, I also brush my teeth for ages, sometimes until my gums bleed and I have to go to the toilet at least twice before bed every night, even if I don't need to (because I am scared of getting a bladder infection by not going to the toilet for hours).
That's all I can think of at the moment. Although I have listed quite a few symptoms, these don't really take up more than about an hour a day (except for trying to get to sleep). But I'm quite worried that it'll get worse - and even thinking about it makes the symptoms more exaggerated).
I am a teenager so some of the symptoms may be just because of growing up.
Please help - and no one say that I am weird, I just want to know if it sounds like OCD. Also, if this does sound like OCD, then could I get diagnosed without telling my parents?
-
Re: Does this sound like OCD?
To be honest I opened this thread with the intention of telling the OP they're an idiot and to stop wanting to be labelled as OCD because they think it's cool.
But honestly, yes. It does sound you are compulsed to doing things, (like rubbing your pen) and it does sound like you do it in an obsessive way. If what you're saying is true, it sounds like it's really affecting your life which must be hard.
Although I do roam the mental health forum often, I know much more about anxiety/depression than I do OCD. Perhaps someone with better knowledge can relate to, and better advise, you on this.
Of course you can get diagnosed without telling your parents. If you did decide to go to the doctor, it would be 100% confidential. Of course I'd urge you to share your problems with your parents so that they can support and help you, but I can understand why you wouldn't... Some people shrug off depression/OCD as attention seeking or just 'made up'. Mental health problems are equally as debilitating as physical ones.Last edited by Rybee; 16-06-2012 at 01:08. -
Re: Does this sound like OCD?
A lot of what you have listed there does show signs of OCD behaviour, so it may be worth going to the doctor's if you feel that it's becoming an issue for you and that it's starting to take up a lot of your time dealing with intrusive thoughts/obsessions and doing compulsions.
You can go to your GP and your parents don't have to know, but I'd really recommend that you do tell them if you feel comfortable enough with it and explaining some of your problems; they can be great for support if it gets worse or if you're having a bad day. Until I went to the doctor's my parents thought I was just being ridiculous with my obsessive cleanliness and hoarding, but after going and getting a referal for CBT they realised that it was an issue and have been more understanding. A lot of people say that finding information online to explain what you're going through can be really useful in helping you to explain it better
When speaking to your GP, it's best if you're able to explain why you do what you do - if you panic if you don't do a compulsion, if you have intrusive thoughts that won't go away if you don't do a compulsion etc. -
Re: The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support and Discussion ThreadWhat did you do to work your way out of it?(Original post by WalkerPassingby)
Great idea for a thread.
I used to have very major OCD, but managed to gradually work my way out of it.
Now I just have the occasional minor thing

Re: The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support and Discussion ThreadIf you're worried about that, you could write down everything you'd like to say, any questions, worries, everything. Then you can give it to him/her in your appointment. That would help you to write everything down you might otherwise forget, and ease the nervousness or worry of you feeling you might be time wasting. The GP will know what to do from then. It won't be that bad honest!(Original post by charliecrucis)
I'm contemplating asking my GP about OCD, but I would feel really bad if I end up time-wasting. Any suggestions???

Re: The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support and Discussion ThreadThanks, that's good idea. I didn't know you could do that with doctors!(Original post by ViceVersa)

Re: The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support and Discussion Thread
Hi guys, another one here!
I'm so glad there's a thread here on TSR about it. I don't like admitting I had OCD but I'm in a bad way at the moment.
I'm not so much about order as my things are generally scattered around, but I'm more of the ritual variety. I have to make sure people are protected if I do certain things, and have to do them at the right time. It sucks when I'm out and I have to think things over in my head rather than saying them out loud. It was so hard when I was at work and constantly trying to wash my hands at every opportunity - I had to use hand wipes at my desk.
I'm petrified of people close to me or even celebrities being harmed. It doesn't help that people spread rumours and tweet about bad things happening - I try to avoid newspapers or else I'll go back to see what I've done to cause it
It's horrible, especially when people I know have such a morbid humour. I'll want to cry and my blood runs cold and I won't get the thought of my head. If I have not heard from someone in a while, I will panic and be afraid to call them just in case the worst has happened. I go through all my rituals but I get more scared.
My next door neighbour has a child who cries and I worry that the worst has happened or that they're in trouble. I've been crying for the past hour as I didn't know what was going on. Even sirens can really upset me. I'm on citalopram and it helps a bit but I need CBT. I have made an appointment but I'm really embarrassed. I treat the concept of death like a small child, but I'm in my 20s.
Sorry for such a long post. I need to get it out there
