Re: Pet Hedgehog :)
Very cute, we nursed a baby hedgehog we found on the road outside our house after it's mother was run over for about 6 months. Amazing how social and tame it became - you could happily pick it up etc. They only 'spike' you if they tense their spikes. They also love eating snails, absolutely destroy them (reminded me of Nibbler from Futurama lol).

Re: Pet Hedgehog :)What about in the wild?(Original post by EarthsDaughter)
They eat cat food. Their lactose intolerant so you have to be careful what you give them!
I imagine the portions are pretty small -
Re: Pet Hedgehog :)
I Look after Wild Hedgehogs at a wildlife rescue centre. They are quite smelly, but they really are all characters, you can form strong bonds with them. They eat quite a lot actually!! Roughly a third of a tin of cat food a day. You can also get special 'hedgehog biscuits' which they like dry or soaked. Young hedgehogs are fine to be fed kitten biscuits which are available from all good vets, and also they love Mealworms, which you can get from say pets at home/any garden store.
Hope this helps..

Re: Pet Hedgehog :)
I had no idea you could buy hedgehogs to keep as pets. This makes me quite worried - where are the hedgehogs being sourced from? Are they being captured and imported? That in itself is pretty wrong. And I can easily imagine unkind people exploiting this, if it's a growing market; especially since they can charge £100 or more. It sounds awful, tbh

Re: Pet Hedgehog :)
What does it mean if you get 'spiked' by a hedgehog? And surely the spikes are sharp all the time? I recently saved up every penny ?I had to buy a cat only to find out my mums allergic! Have about £500 put away so a hedgehog may just be the thing! Gonna have to do a lot of research though...

. I know very little about hedgehogs though so consider this a free bump. Hopefully someone who does will see the thread and reply.

Re: Pet Hedgehog :)
PLEASE don't just go out and get hedgehogs people!
do a lot of research first.
This is how we end up with invasive species buggering up the ecosystem, by people being unable to look after them and just letting them go! (If terrapins, parakeets and house mice (originally African) can survive in the uk I wouldn't be surprised if hedgehogs could) -
Re: Pet Hedgehog :)I know I said I didn't know much about hedgehogs but I do know that they certain species are already found in the UK and are in fact protected and more are wanted. Still I agree that people should research before getting any pet and admit that it may be a completely different type of hedgehog that are kept as pets to what is found wild.(Original post by redferry)

Re: Pet Hedgehog :)It is a completely different type of hedgehog, these (the pet ones) are not even a real species, they are a human created hybrid of four toed hedgehog and Algerian hedgehog. God knows what that species hybridisation has done to their genes.(Original post by curtis871)
