I think I've added everyone that expressed an interest into the OP, so when you create new accounts you'll be able to edit them into your first post. Let me know if I've missed anyone!

I am suggesting that TV is not cultural per se. The first bullet point definition on the Wikipedia article for culture is 'excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities'. It goes on to say the concept first connoted a process of cultivation or improvement. TV fits neither. Indeed, it is a sad reflection of today that TV has such an influence on modern society. Perhaps if we all went to the theatre there would be far less dispute.
I don't particularly want to derail the thread with a tit-for-tat "what I like is better than what you like" argument. Suffice it to say that each of the media I have listed do have merits, and are considered by the majority of people to be culture; just flick through the culture sections of any newspaper and you'll find movie reviews and TV schedules.

As to why some have been missed off, that is simply an issue of practicality. I could list theatre, opera, ballet, but in reality I know I'm probably not going to see any of these next year, so there's little reason to try and chart them.

In the last year I've read approximately 375 - 400 books (a book being defined minimally as one dramatic work or epic poem, etc), seen half as many previously unseen films, took on or revisited three languages at some point, and brushed up on my knowledge of art, theatre and history. I've also been cracking on with my painting, drawing, and been writing a helluva' lot in the past six months.

It's amazing what you can experience in what's a relatively short period of time.
Wow, that's amazing. I was aiming for about 50 books. :p:

On goodreads you need to read 20 books before you get personalized recomendations. TWENTY!! Thats more than I read in a year.

One of my New Year's resolutions is to try and watch more films and read more books next year. The problem I have with resolutions though is that I find them easy to start but quickly fall back into old ways. So I was thinking about a way to track what I'm doing and motivate me to keep going, when the idea expanded into this thread.

I'm going to create accounts on a number of websites to track the different books I read, music I listen to, videogames I play, TV shows and movies I watch, and keep these updated throughout the year. I think it would be awesome if other TSRers did this as well, and we could see how much culture we all manage to get in a year.

The sites I'm going to be using are as follows:

    • Books: http://www.goodreads.com/
    • Music: http://www.last.fm/
    • Movies: http://www.icheckmovies.com/
    • Videogames: http://darkadia.com/
    • TV Shows: http://followmy.tv/

If you're interested in getting involved, then sign up for a new account (it has to be a new account, as otherwise it defeats the purpose of seeing how much you've seen in 2012) for as many or as few of these sites as you want, and post your account links in the thread. For many of them you can add friends, so we can all add each other and see how much we're watching, playing and listening from the 1st of January. On top of that we can use this thread for chatting and to provide recaps for what we've been absorbing over the past week/fortnight/month if you like.

I'll try and keep a list of members who have provided account details in this first post so they can easily be found.

Yeah, I agree. However it looks like we can make different book lists, so perhaps we can have lists for 'previously read' and 'read this year' so we can get recommendations without hindering the challenge?

Will do it if I can get away with just doing books and films?

I'm shocked at how few people are taking part in the music aspect of this.

I would but I don't want to create a whole new last.fm account when the one I've had since I was 13 has got thousands of tracks on it already.

Unless there's some way I can make a new one and have them work in conjunction?

I'll try books and film. I have read a lot of books and watched even more films but I think it'll be interesting to see what I do in 2012.

    So here's my accounts:

Yeah, perhaps it's worth pointing out that you can use a scrobbler on last.fm to have songs that you play on itunes/ipods/etc update last.fm automatically, so it requires almost no effort. Or perhaps everyone has last.fm accounts already and doesn't want to start again...

I've added the account Anna suggested to your post so that you could be indexed in the OP. Let me know if that's the correct account!

I think it's just a case of searching for the film, going to it's page and hitting checked. Don't start until 1st of Jan though! :p:

So the films I watched (the ones post) don't count?

I've updated the OP to have everyone's details in, and created a bit for my sig so that more people around the site will hear about this. If you want to have something similar feel free, the template is below:
