Is Manchester a safe place to study?
Welcome to the University of Manchester forum: where prospective and current students can discuss anything about Manchester Uni.

Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?you call that trouble?(Original post by Captain_Birdseye)
But the most trouble I had was a 12 year old asking me to buy him fags. -
Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?
And while I don't think it's realistic to judge it against somewhere as vast and varied as London, Manchester is certainly one of the wealthier, if not the wealthiest northern city with the biggest student pop. Somewhere like Sheffield, now there's a place that don't care for students!

Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?London is definitely more greezy then Manchester, even central(Original post by EllaService)
Well of course I am not saying that there aren't parts of London that are equally "violent" or have social misbehaviour on a comparable or worse scale - I live in a nice area in London and so am not too exposed. I think the comparison is between central areas - I would say central Manchester has a lot more obvious loutish and aggressive behaviour generally than does central London. I am sure that there are parts of London that have a lot worse than anywhere in Manchester, but I don't get to be there much. I haven't seen obviously racist behaviour in Manchester particularly. It's more of an implied threat of violent crime. I get the impression that street robbery is more common and street violence generally. This could be a false impression I admit. -

Well no, that was my point! (until he beat the crap out of me...) -
Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?
No, I live here. The only racist area is Salford, the rest is okay. Infact, Manchester is probably the least racist area but that's because a white racist guy would probably get beaten up here if they tried saying anything racist in any area which is not salford or wythenshawe.

Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?just a little bit of gangs mainly,(Original post by joshgoldman)
Manchester really isn't a dodgy city. The only things I've heard of are that Fallowfield went through a point where a number of girls got abducted.

dont go into mosside
and some others calmed down abit now, 1998-2004 was grimey -
Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?
Thanks guys, I've been reassured by the posts. It seems like Salford and outskirts you are unfamiliar with should be avoided. I just can't come to terms with what happened to that Indian kid. That sets such a bad precedent for the UK, it would've been big news in the international community I reckon. Even more so, he was in a group of 9, it seems like a cold, calculated, pre meditated murder, shocking, but I guess it could happen anywhere and if you lived life fearing these yobs and racists than you may as well be dead as well.
I will probably stay in the city centre for most of my time there. I may venture out into some of the North West areas like Bolton, Blackburn and Wigan to take advantage of the cheap PL tickets :P but I guess I'll do a bit of research beforehand.
Thank you everyone! And sorry if I've come across as pedantic or a troll...surely its only natural to feel worried after such a killing and knowing you are thinking of studying in the area? :O -
Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study? Is Mosside as grizzley as people make out? Isn't it blacks, do they have a big problem with anyone who isn't black? (Whites/Asians)(Original post by zubz91)

Well yh kinda do, if your asian or white you gotta act like you know what you doing and preferably be with 3 guys or more. And sumtyms its good to carry a weap*n for self defense. Something simple as a few pebbles in a sock will do. just to swing when needed, best not to go there
and by the way its greezey not grizzley LOL

Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?Yh UOM is situated near mosside, but its mainly the outskirts, more to the inside is where **** goes down. They generally mind their own business drugs and weaponry dealings. So if you dont say nothing to them, they wont say nothing to you. Just come across few which may put a hole in your head for no reason.(Original post by srascal8)

Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?
Salford isn't Manchester

I spent three years there and no hint of trouble - don't go looking for it and you won't find it.
Moss Side isn't actually that bad, it's just down to the reputation it gained in the 1980s. Any problems with gangs etc are almost exclusively between other gangs, they don't attack 'outsiders' (especially students) as it's just unwanted police attention - also the areas around both universities are heavily policed.(Original post by srascal8)

Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study? As a Mancunian born and bred and of British-Indian heritage I can tell that racism is not a problem in Manchester/Greater Manchester generally speaking. The last time I had someone make a racist comment was problem going back to when I was 6 or 7 and that was at school in the playgrounf.(Original post by srascal8)
Following the brutal racial attack on the Indian kid in Salford, I'm questioning whether it would be right to go to Manchester now.
Is racist behaviour common in Manchester itself, or is it an outskirts problem? Would I walk back from a club one night and be shot in the head by a White guy with a handgun? I thought this behaviour left Britain a while ago and on boxing day, shocking. Would you say as long as you avoid Stockport/ Salford/ burnley you will be safe? Any other RACIST areas of Manchester you could inform me of? Is Manchester city multicultural and the outskirts ethnic death traps?
Cheers, just dubious.
As another poster pointed out the shooting was in Salford which although Greater Manchester is strictly speaking not within the Manchester boundary and nowhere near the student areas in either Manchester or Salford.
Manc Uni is along Oxford Road which is supposedly one of the busiest bus routes in the country every weekday morning and I think that area (due to location of Manc Uni, MMU, RNCM etc) has the largest concentration of students anywhere in Europe. Anyways it's Oxford Road leads along into Rusholme. I can't guarantee crime doesn't happen as crime is unpredictable and can happen at any time any place. Oxford Road has had muggings in the past but generally it's pretty safe.
As with any big city you need to apply common sense and remain vigilant not just on Oxford Road but anywhere in Manchester really. Don't walk down dark alleys or poorly lit streets especially ones you don't know, don't go round walking around flashing your mobile or ipod and after dark make sure you're with a group of friends and stick to crowded areas. If you are on your own then get a taxi, don't walk around aimlessly. Walking around drunk on your own is never a good idea.
You just have to be careful and like I said exercise caution. Manchester is one of the major cities of the UK and in recent years has been notorious for crime but how many big cities aren't associated with crime?
Stay safe. -
Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?Mosside is a bit of a trek from Oxford Road and if you're a uni student and walking down there then you're asking for trouble.(Original post by zubz91)

Wilmslow Road isn't particularly notorious but as I said before there's always a first time and I wouldn't recommend turning down some of those dark roads especially at night or near where the old Maine Road stadium used to be.
I mean seriously the way some people are talking on here it's as if people get shot all the time in Manchester. Ridiculous. This ain't the Wild West or anything and drawing pistols at noon or anything of the sort.
To be honest if you go looking for trouble then inevitably trouble will find you.
There's no reason for students to be going down places like Longsight, Mosside, Newton Heath, Hulme, Levenshulme and Wythenshawe which are generally the roughest areas.
Also just to point out Salford is notorious for crime and it didn't help that poor Anuj was walking around there at 1:30am.
Having lived in Manc all my life there are some places I won't even walk around after 11pm or even during the day nevermind Salford at going on 2am.
Common sense. If it's 1am or later get a cab back to your place rather than walking back. If you're hungry grab a quick bite and head off. If there's nothing around (highly unlikely) then just go straight on home, don't walk around for a kebab. -
Re: Is Manchester a safe place to study?
I've lived in Manchester my whole life and have never had any problems, but to be honest you can't predict where stuff like this is going to happen, you can be in the poshest, least crime ridden place in the world and there is still a chance something could happen. That's life and the recent shooting was a completely unprovked and out of the blue attack, I've walked on that street where it happened at night (thanks to a crap ex) and was perfectly fine. Just use common sense and don't let one attack that could have happened anywhere, as racist physcos live all over the county, dictate where you go and particularly where you study
