No, I would love to do biochemistry!! The facilities for it are fantastic, and I can transfer into medicine later.

If there's under-bed storage then there should be more than enough space to put it, just be a pain setting it up every time I want to use it, but no matter! :P

    Thankyou for the advice!!

Fair enough! My friend does Biochem after wanting to do Medicine, but missed it by a grade or so. He loves it here, and says that to some extent you really do more than Medicine - lots more detail and so on, so it's really interesting.
Check out the video on page 2/3 of this thread and you can see the rooms. Also, the university website: http://www.shef.ac.uk should have information too.

There will be room, honestly. And if you don't want to set it up each time, there is a gap behind the bed - lots of people put their suitcases here, so it does show you that there is a fair bit of room. I'd say a keyboard would fit there personally. If not, you can always see if it fits under the desk.

I doubt it! I mean, most students tend to stay with their flatmates, but some tend to move in with coursemates. I'd say unless you expressly asked them to, I'd doubt they'd rely on you for a house! Most people sign for a house in November/December (very early, I know!), so I can't imagine so unless you asked them.
NB: Recently found out that you cannot rent a house out with more than 3 students in without a particular licence, so if you needed any extra money or had a spare room, you could always have that as an open option. With £90/week inc bills, it could make it easier to get by.

I'm a fresher too, but slightly odd question. Do/you can you drink the water from the bathroom? Came up in conversation today and no one could decide ...

I think it tastes better than the kitchen water, and it's closer.

Hi I was just wondering a few things:

I plan on going to Sheffield given that I pass my foundation course and I was thinking of getting the Deluxe room. How likely do you think I will be in a flat with more than a few people? I'm not from Sheffield and I really want to make some friends since I'm alienated at the college I'm currently at. I suppose I would make friends on my course and stuff but it would be nice to live with more than a few people.

I was also wondering how easy is it to get a parking permit and is it safe to park around the student buildings? And how likely is it to get a parking space?

Hah! Well, we're in the UK and have water standards - it's not going to kill you.

I've been drinking pints of the stuff because i'm too lazy to go to the (disgusting) kitchen to dilute my squash and i'm not dead yet. I do think something is a little bit funny about it though but it won't kill you
The water in Sheffield does taste weird compared to home.... (Half an hour away).

I imagine you probably want an answer in terms of weights etc. so i'm not really the best person to answer. The gym has just been refurbished, and is kitted out with Life Fitness machines now, plenty of cardio and resistance machines. I have an off-peak membership so I don't know if it gets bad during "peak" or what but off-peak suits me fine.

This is the general website, but what might be of more interest is this. Post about the refurb, can see the layout plans. There's some comments at the bottom (mostly people speculating about the free weights) which might help answer something, if not i'm sure someone else will come along who knows more.
Thanks for the in depth post. I've got you on recharge.

It's pretty good. Has everything you need. It can get busy, but apparently the free weights area is better now. I've not been, but I've heard there's two squat racks now which is a nice improvement.

Membership includes access to the pool (sauna and steamroom)

I have an invitation for an open day which "may involve an informal interview" , what are these interviews like and what do you wear? (its for software engineering btw)

Is the accommodation new and modern or old and traditional and how much choice do you get in your accommodation?

Is there anyone here who does software engineering? Whats the course like in general?

The informal interview for biology was I think just to make sure you knew what the course involved. It wasn't a test in anyway; they might ask you a subject-based question, but they probably won't be expecting you to give a correct or a knowledgeable answer.

I'm sure there is no dress code, but maybe not shorts just be safe.

The accommodation is all pretty modern, most is less than 5 years old. The choice is

location (city-based residential halls or halls 1 mile away from the centre and 1/2 mile from uni)
mixed sex or not (not guaranteed to get mixed)
    catered or self-catered
en-suite or not (there are not many non-en-suite rooms, but you might get one if en-suite is over subscribed).

Hey, I'm at Sheffield already but am thinking of joining the Gym. Does it get particularly busy during the non peak times? Do you go to classes as well?

Never been to any of the classes. They're apparently quite popular though, and they are in with the membership...

It's reasonable at off-peak, but they have loads of treadmills and cross trainers (and cycles, and sufficient rowing machines). Unless you're looking for like the specific resistance machines where they might only be one/two of, you're never waiting for anything, and even then if you are it's normally not for very long. Can't say much about the weights section

I imagine there's a bit of an uptake right now, what with some new year resolutions, decent deals and the whole refurbishment, but i've never had issues with it being too busy.
Ooh that's good to hear then. I wouldn't want to be standing around for machines and I doubt I'd be doing many weights really, so that sounds pretty good.

Yeah, I can imagine! There is a good deal which is about £30 for three months I think, which is what has made me think about it. One last thing, did you have an induction? Thanks for your help!

I was wondering about sports at sheffield. I'm from the US, so I'm not sure how they work in the UK. Do you have a volleyball team/club? If so, are they competitive or is just for fun? Thanks in advance

I was iffy about it at first, because the water appears white when you wash plates etc, but it's all good. My flatmate cannot be bothered to move to the kitchen (fair play!) so uses her tap water, and she is still going strong, so there you go. (:
