Does anyone know if you use subjunctive after pongamos por caso que? I'm writing an essay and wanted to use that phrase

Would you mind providing the whole sentence for context as I don't think I've ever heard that combination before

I am trying to use it like "let's say that" instead of por ejemplo which I've used too much:

Pongamos por caso que recibas/recibes un correo electrónico....

No, that is not follow by the subjunctive, but by the present tense. Another way of saying that which is also followed by the present is "digamos que..." :smile:

Now, this is odd. You are a native speaker and therefore you will be correct. However, if we are supposing a situation that isn't a reality, I would have thought it would trigger the subjunctive (but I'm clearly wrong). But my vocab book (palabra por palabra) from last year, in fact, puts 'pongamos por caso que' in a list of constructions which are followed by the present subjunctive. Would you say the same for 'pongamos que...' and that it too takes the indicative, as here it is stated it requires the subjunctive? http://blogs.transparent.com/spanish/advanced-spanish-lesson-23-expresiones-de-probabilidad/

I'm not trying to insult you in any way, nor undermine your Spanish, by the way; I'm curious, for my own benefit, so I can write more accurately in exams.

To me it sounds correct to say "pongamos que" is followed by present tense

Also, strictly speaking those phrases don't express uncertainty really, they're more just giving examples, hypotheticals if you will. They're not insinuating that it will/could happen to you :smile:

So they take the same tenses as "por ejemplo" which takes the present

I don't know why I think it's fine digamos que takes the indicative but am questioning this haha.

Okay, but if we were to express something similar to the si + hypothetical clause + conditional clause, would it be the same for pongamos por caso que?

E.g.
Pongamos por caso que viniera ella, se lo diría o no?

But does imaginemos que take the subjunctive? I mean, I know that website says it does, but id be interested to hear what you think.

That example with pongamos por caso que followed by imperfect subjunctive doesn't sound right. Because "pongamos por caso que" cannot be equated to "if". They are fundamentally different. If expresses uncertainty of an event, "pongamos.." is merely a hypothetical or example situation.

In my experience "imaginemos que " is always followed by present. It's a very common phrase in Spain, I've used it many times and heard my Spanish relatives use it and they always employ the present indicative. Again, "imaginemos que" is the same as "por ejemplo"

Pero no os quejeis porque nosotros los que vivimos en España también para aprender inglés no nos enseñan a hablar en una situación cotidiana, sino que nos dan toda la gramática y todo lo que no nos va a servir para nada en un futuro. Yo voy a ir un mes a Sheffield a hacer mis prácticas de profesora en un colegio, y estoy segura que voy a aprender más allí que aquí, y eso que estoy estudiando magisterio de primaria en bilingüe.
En resumen, que se aprende más en el extranjero.

also, I've also seen 'la subida de adrenalina' somewhere, don't know where though.

This is how I would translate them, open to corrections, as always. Bear in mind, I'm not a native, so there is probs some really beat 'everyday' way of saying it.

Sí, eso es lo normal para mí jájajaja como dije 'there is probably an everyday way of saying it'. La verdad es que me costó mucho traducir exactamente la última frase. Gracias por traducirla :smile:
