Rank these 5 universities for geography
I've had offers to study BA Geography at these five universities, i'm 99% sure of my top choice and just wondered how others feel they rank against one another in terms of prestige. How would you rank the following 5 for geography and why?
Leicester
Queen Mary, University of London
Royal Holloway, University of London
Sheffield
Sussex -
Re: Rank these 5 universities for geography
What do you want to study? Human geography? I'd discount Sussex and Leicester tbh. In terms of decent staff currently teaching undergrads I'd go with Sheffield (although they have just lost Gill Valentine to Leeds... which is a bit of a blow) or Holloway. That said, QML is probably one of the best postgrad geography departments in the country. Id i had offers for all of the above I'd take Sheffield or QML.

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geography1st. Sheffield - biased but great course, bit boring in first year but everywhere is, disagree with above poster about losing academics, we have Danny Dorling! and then(Original post by swbp)

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geography
This is really funny, because i'm choosing Sussex haha! I appreciate the opinions though, and i agree that Sheffield and Holloway both have better reputations for it. However Sussex is still well ranked, and Sheffield didn't have a campus feel so that was a definate no. I appreciate your effort though

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geographyNo problem, some people are definitely more campusy people anyway, I'm definitely a city person! Would have died of boredom at Holloway personally! I do have a friend at Sussex who loves it so I'm sure it's the right choice for you(Original post by swbp)

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geographyI'll upvote you when I can as I agree.(Original post by Hanshen)
I'd defo have taken Sheffield out of that lot like I say. I know my comments were down voted, but really... it is true
Sussex is still decent though.

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geography
Sorry guys, i've just confirmed Sussex as my firm choice and RHUL as my insurance. I agree that Sheffield is great, however the non-campus layout was a massive drawback for me, plus the course at Sussex seemed more interesting and i like the university better overall.

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geographySussex has everything i want to be honest - a well ranked university (in the UK and the world) as well as a brilliant city to live in. The course looks dead interesting, and also gives me the oppurtunity to take modules in other subject areas which is great for me as i'd love to do some anthropology and sociology alongside my degree. The campus is in a national park, yet you're 5 minuets from the city, so it has the best of both worlds. It just looks brilliant and i can't wait to start(Original post by lucas13)
what did you like about the uni?

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geography
I see that you've already made a decision but if you/anyone else is still interested, the Guardian league tables for subjects can be a useful starting point:

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geographyGuardian tables are a complete joke. There is no way Exeter is better than Sheffield for geography, it doesn't even have 5 for research assessment.(Original post by Haz606)

Re: Rank these 5 universities for geographyThe Guardian tables don't take research into account as it's not really one of the main factors that students are interested in when choosing a University.(Original post by Chapeau Rouge)

Sussex is still decent though.
