Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012
Anyone got any ideas on the Mann-Whitney U test and Chi Squared? My teacher went through the skills list for the first time with us today and we were like what are these and he just dismissed them?! Am I missing something important? Had a look in our text book like mentioned to do and I have no idea how to use them or why they would be important for statistical analysis! Any help please?
Also not looking forward to any question that ends in 'has helped your geographical understanding' -
Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012Are you doing 4b or 4a? Sounds like 4b to me.(Original post by 0zzy94)
Isnt it on the city 'Poole' thought it'd be the same for everyone..? -
Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012Same as me, i think the mann-whitney U looks to see if their if is a significant difference between two variables, to see if their is a strong or weak relationship in realtion to your aim.. but im not too sure. All i know about chi sqaured is that you can only use count data and you have your observed and then expected and then you can see if their is a significant difference from that.. all so confusing i hate it! Im not looking forward to the bit after the fieldwork.. not sure what its going to be(Original post by S.Pink)

Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012Yes i am! and whether it increases as you go further in land and stuff!(Original post by popnit)
Went through loads of stuff today with my teacher and feel abit more confident on this paper..
Is anyone doing %vegetation in a sand dune system? -
Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012Ahh Im glad someone is feeling the same as me(Original post by scared!)

The books explanation was very confusing but think im going to stick to a very simple idea of it and then hope it doesn't come up! Fingers crossed!
I never feel under prepared for exams but I do for this one and I am hoping for a decent A at the end of it but not feeling it at the mo
What did you do? We looked at the regeneration of Gloucester City and it is really really hard to write about! -

I'm hoping for a question that asks how my investigation helped my understanding of the geographical theory. For the actual skills section I'm just hoping for something easy that I can figure out

Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012Oh good, yeahh me too! Really not hoping for chi squared, it's time consuming!(Original post by S_123)

Its horrible, and the books don't help at all! Also our teachers haven't done lessons on it, they've just continued on with our topics.. werid! and yeah chi sqaured shouldn't! i heard that sampling has never came up, but i could never talk 12 marks on that! Yep i was hoping for a B or A for this, then the second paper wouldn't be as tricky to gain marks.. but im not feeeling it either, more panicking!! and oh we looked at if these sand dunes fitted the pssaomosere model of plant succession. funfunfun.xx

Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012I find them really difficult to link to my aim and I find I just ramble on about the same point! Oh well...(Original post by popnit)

With reference to Figure 2, outline and justify one method of sampling that you
could use to select further data to investigate housing characteristics. (8)
This was the second part of the section. SEC B -
Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012
Chi squared came up in the June 2011 paper, it is unlikely to come up tomorrow.
Mann-Whitney U is used to see whether two sets of data, same variable but different area, are the same or not. The book I has talks about the amount of acacia trees per sample square in a national park and an area used for grazing. I have looked at bedford roundness along two parts of a river (upper course and middle course)
The null hypothesis would be 'there is no difference between (x variable) in (first site) and (second site).
The alternative would therefore be that there is a difference.
Mann-Whitney tells us that there is/isn't a difference but doesn't tell us why, it leads us to use our own geographical knowledge or further investigation to do this.
Hope this makes sense and helps.
Good luck to everyone for tomorrow! -
Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012
Few possible questions:
START
1) In the light of your aim why was the location selected?
2_ Why was/were the aim/hypotehsis/es chosen?
3)How important wasthe theory in the choice of aim?
4) How important was location in the choice of aim?
5) How important was theroy in the coice of location
METHODS
1) Describe and justify the risk assessments that you did
2) Justify the methods used to collect data
3) Explain how and why data was selected for the investigation
3) How was data selected; what improvements would you make?
5) Explain the importance of sampling to your investigation
SKILLS
1) Data presentation skills, why selected what were stregnths and weaknesses
2)Data presentation, evaluate the alternatives?
3) What skills were used to present the data and why were they useful?
4) How did the aim influence presentation methods?
5) How did results influence presentation skills?
INTERPRETATION
1) How and why were the techniques of interpretation useful in developing understanding
2) How did the aim/data influence the skills of interpreation used
3) Interpret the results in the light of the aim - how was understanding broadenedd/ contributed to?
4) How did the results influence interpretation?
5) How important were anomalies in the interpreattion of the data collected?
CBA WITH THIS SECTION
CONCLUSION / EVALUATION
1) Evaluate the success of the investigation in the light of the aim.
2) What did you learn from this study - geographical understanding
3) How did theory influlence your evaluation of this investigation
4) How can your investigation be further devlpoped and extned?
5) In what whats would your conclusions be of use to other geographers?
fml just copied them from a sheet, most qs won't come up, -

Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012
I read through this thinking it was all for the Geography 4B paper..... and still not sure. the two sound very similar. on geog 4b would we get a question on how something has "improved our geographical understanding"?!?!?!?!!? if so, i have never been told those words before!!!!! major panic now!!!!!

Re: AQA Geography GEOG4a February 2nd 2012So if chi squared came up then Mann Whitney might come up... thanks for the heads up on that, my teacher is useless he never mentioned the june 11 paper and I couldnt find it on aqa! Not sure if I want it still though...(Original post by ngray4)
