GCSEs are an utter joke
Discussion for GCSE students, including those studying for IGCSEs and O Levels.

Re: GCSEs are an utter jokeYou say you're clever, but you derp like a pro.(Original post by Aldridge)
Are you referring to me? -
Re: GCSEs are an utter jokeA-levels are a bit of a joke TBH. I mean, they make them sound so scary, Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computing, all such easy A-levels. You could practically turn up for any of those exams and get an A. Revise for just a tiny bit and you might get an A*. It's really disgusting.(Original post by Aldridge)
Does anybody else agree GCSE's are a complete pisstake?
They are far too easy, you can practically turn up on the day and get an A* using common sense.
IMO they definitely need to make them far, far more difficult, to separate people with intelligence from people with common sense. -
Re: GCSEs are an utter jokeThis seems on the right note.(Original post by Pn94)
Just goes to show how detached TSR is from real life. Maybe the OP is true for a select elite of students, but for the vast majority, it really isn't.
Really?(Original post by Sabster)
13 A*
What scores? (UMS)

Re: GCSEs are an utter jokeThe system needs to change so that it suits you? Get over yourself.(Original post by Sabster)
For a joke go into a Biology/Geography exam with no revision and you will cruise an A*.
The subjects are soo ridiculously easy, dont get me on to Maths/Languages - I could have done Maths GCSE at the age of 8 and French/Spanish/Latin at 11.
THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE -
Re: GCSEs are an utter jokehmm, i'll give you that one(Original post by JOR2010)
I assure you it's true! (Saying that, I am Italian, I just took informed guesses.)

Re: GCSEs are an utter joke
I pretty much ****ed up by GCSEs; probably because I did no revision whatsoever, due partly to constantly hearing about how easy they are and partly because I was a bit cocky.
I got a B in both English subjects (My best subject - I was gutted
)
C in Maths - messed about in almost every maths lesson in year 11. I just find the subject extremely tedious and, after the basics, irrelevant to life for the average person.
U in As Biology - We were forced to take it a year early, instead of doing triple science (I got Bs in my Sciences). I've never held an interest in science at all so I didn't put any effort in, wrote all joke answers in the exam and still got like 8 marks somehow
GCSEs really gave me the kick up the back side I needed though. I've put quite a bit of effort into my A levels and i'm expected to get AAB
Anyway in relevance to the original point, GCSEs are not a joke. They are a means of testing everyone, not just the really intelligent minority. Plus, I think they give the opportunity for the not so academic to earn qualifications, and for those that are academic, the opportunity to gain experience and learn important lessons before entering into higher education.Last edited by Rock_and_roll; 31-12-2011 at 15:14. -
Re: GCSEs are an utter joke
They seem hard at the time and when you get to A level you think they're easy, but I'm sure most university students would say the same about A levels; it's all a matter of perspective.
I did well in my GCSEs, and although I didn't work anywhere as near as hard as I do now, I did have to work for them, though maybe not so much for the softer subjects like ICT and RS. The thing about walking into an Italian exam and getting an A* with no knowledge of the language is also bull****.
GCSEs could probably be made harder, but you've made a generalisation which doesn't take into account the fact that abilities differ among students and ignores the fact that most people do have to work hard to get 10A*s or whatever, and if they don't then it suggests they were spoonfed a lot of their courses and are going to get a nasty shock at A level. Also, you sound like a pillock.

Re: GCSEs are an utter jokeDon't talk f**king *******s, there's no way you can just "turn up" and get an A* in any subject. Yes, certain GCSE's have become too easy and there is a case for improving their standard or perhaps switching to the IGCSE, but to say you can get top marks by just using "common sense"? BS.(Original post by Aldridge)

Re: GCSEs are an utter joke
I know this is a student forum. Therefore you are all students. (I used to be...really should get off here at some point! But.so.addictive).
But I need to say something....
GCSE's feel like the most important thing in the world when you are 15/16. They are not.
A-levels feel like the most important thing in the world when you are 17/18. They are not.
University feels like the most important thing in the world when you are 18-23. Well it is pretty important depending on what you want to do...but ultimately it is not.
The society we live in dictates that everyone must have these three things to be deemed intelligent. This is not true.
So yes, while GCSE's are p*ss easy compared to A-levels which are p*ss easy compared to a degree. But just remember to enjoy life. And stop worrying about them. Do the best you can.
And no. You cannot casually stroll into biology/maths GCSE with no work and get an A*. Just no.
I know this post is not entirely relevant to the OP bar the end. But seriously people. I wish I realised all this at 15. I thought GCSE's were the most important thing in the world. They really are not... -
Re: GCSEs are an utter joke
yup they are an actual piss take!! and then the step up between GCSE and AS is massive. GCSEs should definitely be made harder just so there isn't as much of a jump between year 11 and sixth form. All you need to well at GCSE is memorise the make schemes and the same questions come up, at AS it suddenly turns into a lot more of application, and the content itself is much higher level. GCSEs need to be made more difficult.

I disagree with this. I think that the exams should be structured in a way that prepares the student for their A levels. I finished my GCSE's last year, and it isn't possible to turn up on the day without any revision to get an A*. You must be one of the 'smart arses' who can remember a load of information when you don't think you're taking it in. You're pretty much saying that those people who don't have intelligence just common sense are pretty much thick...and get through life just by choices of their common sense. Well i think you're wrong. You may have completed your A levels already, and going to University..of course you're going to find it much easier. But if you're in a persons shoes at the time with no revision backed up in your pocket...tbh i think you'll be screwing yourself. Because NOT ALL people are like you. For most individuals...gcse's are as hard as it is at the time..the questions just need to be made so you are prepared for your years in the future, and so that you have to actually understand and let the information sink in, other than just flunk your way through ticking boxes.Last edited by Dimples18; 31-12-2011 at 15:42. -
Re: GCSEs are an utter joke
I agree to some extent that GCSEs are easy and now I'm doing my A-levels they seem like nothing. However, I disagree that you can just turn up to the exam and get an A*. Although some people may be able to I don't think this is true for the majority. I had to still revise for my exams and work hard to get my grades, alhtough they weren't the top grades I'm stil happy with them and am hoping to do better on my A-levels

Re: GCSEs are an utter jokeyou sound like you have fun(Original post by JOR2010)
I did a Spanish GCSE Higher Reading as a laugh (never studied Spanish), and got a comfortable A*! :') -

Only a few years ago those who went on to go to top ten uni's and do classical subjects achieved a number of A*'s. Nowadays any idiot can achieve that. -

I got a C in German GCSE although tbf I didn't really work for it and I got high Bs on the actual exams and was just let down by my coursework.
