Re: sociology exam 12th January 2012Industrialisation from a marxist perspective is kind of simple.(Original post by ruby_v)
Is indrustrialisation covered in the book? Is there any point going over it?
Its best you know the following:
1. Caused class inequalities
- Bourgeois and Proleteriat
2. Victorian era
- Caused the acceptance of hiearchy and less pay. I.E. Men would make x amount of something, but rather than getting 50% of the profits for example, they would get a vastly less salary at the end of the month.
3. Death of the extended family
- Nuclear fams became more common. These fams were geographically mobile. I.E. could move to where the jobs are. Also, nuclear families are more diverse on social status. I.E. Status is achieved not ascribed. Sons could get higher social class than their parents.
4. Industrialisation led to more wealth and land ownership
- Men wanted to pass their wealth onto biological sons. This forced women in a monogamous marriage.
Marxist Feminist POV
1. Capitalism created domestic violence.
- Men are angry at being exploited at work. They hate it if their wives challenge their authority at home so inflict or use the threat of domestic violence. -
Re: sociology exam 12th January 2012
I'm sitting this exam, our ociology teacher reckos that social policy may come up as a 24 mark because it has not been asked since June 2010 also childbirth, family size and mortality rates could be another possible. If you get a chance take a glance at examiner reports for the new spec and see what was answered well and poorly this should give you a rough idea on what will be put on again.

Re: sociology exam 12th January 2012
Good luck to everyone doing this tomorrow
As long as we get 100% on short questions and remember the theories and mention 3-4 sociologists names it is not to hard to get an A/B
All about mentioning everything for that particular topic so depth is not key when discussing things.
I have a feeling a demography question will come up as a 24 marker and/or Social policy/functionalism and marxism.
Good luck guys

Re: sociology exam 12th January 2012You could write that other institutions could perform those functions (single parents, schools socialise children etc.) and just generally criticise that functionalists see society as a human body.(Original post by helpmekid)

Re: sociology exam 12th January 2012There are my notes that I've collected from books and the internet. They are, however, not very organized and how I write notes is not for everyone. Ignore the Ham; Bull e.t.c it's my database that I use for memorizing.(Original post by ChooChooCherry)

Re: sociology exam 12th January 2012Reproductive: birth rate is at an all time low and women are not simply 'instruments of production' (Marx- Communist manifesto)(Original post by helpmekid)
WHy do people want social policy i hate that lol theres nothing to write about, remind me what it is?

Economic- division of labour is more equal now as wilmott and young found 72% of men help and not the clear division of labour
educational: other institutions have took over this as Parsons himself said since industrialisaton schools perform socialization as it that can train potential workers
Plus, murdock only looked at nuclear but this is incorrect for both femenists and when we see the higr diversity concerning families
i understand it all but don't know how i would put it into an essay or evaluate it . Fingers crossed its not on that!
