Re: What would you want to know about Oxford?I'm pretty sure that you have to do four years for Biochemistry. (It's different for some other courses.)(Original post by ambertrees)
Hi!
I'm new to TSR and hope this is the correct place to post a question that I have
I've received an open offer to read Biochemistry at Oxford (really excited about this!!) and I know that the duration of the course is 4 years leading up to an MBiochem degree. Does anyone know whether it's possible to receive an undergraduate degree in that subject in 3 years instead?
An external scholarship that I'm considering requires me to get my undergrad degree in 3 years!
Thanks so so much!! (: -
Re: What would you want to know about Oxford? From what I can see the course has to be the entire four years (as opposed to, say, maths, where you can supplicate for a BA after three instead of the MMath after four). If you were careful you could try claiming to the scholarship body that, since 4th-year students have quasi-graduate status in most colleges (membership of the MCR, for instance), the first three years could be considered eligible for the scholarship anyway? Would be a bit tenuous, though.(Original post by ambertrees)

Re: What would you want to know about Oxford? You're trying to generalize based on a student body of 21,500..(Original post by TobeTheHero)
Anyways, my question is, what are the students of the university like? do they act posh, arrogant, obnoxious etc

Re: What would you want to know about Oxford?
No-one told me the Creweian oration (at the end of http://www.ox.ac.uk/media/global/wwwoxacuk/localsites/gazette/documents/supplements2011-12/Encaenia_2012_(1)_to_No_4993.PDF) was so much fun.

Re: What would you want to know about Oxford?
Thanks for pointing that out, skipped over the entire transcript earlier.
hee! This is an especially memorable day. After all, it may be - just possibly - the day on which classical Latin prose has achieved its biggest live audience ever. Cicero can eat his heart out.

Re: What would you want to know about Oxford?Message me any questions.(Original post by G333)
Hey, is anyone doing PPE at Oxford, or already has done it??
I would really like to talk to someone about it (the course etc) - so please message me or something, it would be amazing!!
Thank you
Just finished my 2nd year -

Re: What would you want to know about Oxford?I don't think it is; for instance on the Oxford undergrad courses page physics is listed as BA/MPhys, maths as BA/MMath, but biochem is just MBiochem (hence my post above).(Original post by natninja)

Re: What would you want to know about Oxford?Oh ok... that's odd... e-mail admissions?(Original post by dbmag9)

Re: What would you want to know about Oxford?Don't know about Balliol specifically, but generally colleges have some kind of book grant (and Oxford being Oxford there shouldn't be too many books you need to buy, though it'll depend on your course).(Original post by gimboid)
Do colleges offer academic grants for books and software? In particular Balliol. If so how much?

I don't think it is; for instance on the Oxford undergrad courses page physics is listed as BA/MPhys, maths as BA/MMath, but biochem is just MBiochem (hence my post above).I think you will find that that this relates to what existed before the invention of undergraduate masters.(Original post by natninja)
Oh ok... that's odd... e-mail admissions?
If there was a 4 year BA, then there is now no 3 year BA option. If there was a 3 year BA, there is still a three year BA despite the invention of a 4 year undergraduate masters.Last edited by nulli tertius; 24-06-2012 at 22:27. -

If its anything like other sciences you can choose after you start to do a three year Bachelors courseSimilarly, you cannot leave chemistry after third year: you can only take the four year MChem option.(Original post by dbmag9)

Re: What would you want to know about Oxford? Some ground floor, some first and some second. There's a guy in my year in a wheelchair, so everything is pretty accessible now.(Original post by dancinginrainbows)
Somebody at Merton: this will seem stupidly specific, but I could do with knowing because of disability. How many floors are there in the first-year undergraduate accomodation? -
Re: What would you want to know about Oxford? That's fantastic, thank you(Original post by dbmag9)
