it's not really comparable though - piece of piss getting a training contract compared to pupillage, especially when you factor in all the little firms in far flung market towns.
1 in 8 get pupillage. Not bad odds. Try applying for any other job and see how many applicants they get.

I would be curious to know where you got your 1 in 8 statistic from as last year there were roughly 8000 applicants for about 500 places making it 1 in 16 (numbers are very rounded)

Also I have applied to Temple Court and not heard either way yet, and as they are a young set I would agree probably not many applicants so yay fingers crossed last hope for this year!

Where did you get 8000 applicants from? The BSB's website states that there were 2,865 applicants for 446 places, which is closer to 6 to 1.

This seems far more likely if there were 1,432 BPTC passes leading up to that application session. Presumably after 3 unsuccessful sessions (ie pre-BPTC year, BPTC year and year after BPTC) the numbers of people who stick around for a further few sessions rapidly declines (if nothing else given that they'll likely be beginning to pursue work elsewhere and demoralised by the accumulation of rejections) so 2865 applicants per year for pupillage sounds far more likely than 8000.

Edit: there arent even 8000 people passing the BPTC in a five-year block; 7622 passed in the last 5 year period covered by the BSB's stats, of whom each year a number will have been cut out of the pool due to the 450+ pupillage places each year so that you'd never be in a position where ever individual who passed the BPTC in the last 5 years is applying for pupillage simultaneously.

If you take a pool of 7622 potential applicants for pupillage over a 5-year period and then subtract there having been 4 sets of 450 (ish) pupillages in that period you end up with about 5822 potential applicants per year, oh whom many are reported to go back to practice in their home country and a number will have given up since that pool of potential applicants includes people who have then had 3/4/5 previous application sessions of disappointment.

I think it's important to differentiate between applicants and applications.

Which date(s) have been people been allocated for the CPS final interview stage? I was wondering how long they were going on for. Mine is scheduled for two weeks before posts are offered and I'm just hoping that they speed up the process and we may hear earlier?!

comparing statistics taken from those who pass the bptc is pointless. about a quarter of those in my bptc class are on sponsorship schemes and they 'import' themselves over from the asia/far east just to complete the course. theyb openly confess that theyre not even interested in pupillage, taking the qualification back home makes you highly respected and gets u a fab job in a sometimes poor country.

The main issue is that the stats are meaningless compared to most other graduate jobs. It is very rare to have a graduate job competed for by such highly qualified graduates with also a range of real world experience on their CVs. Very few careers compare to the Bar in this regard - perhaps only things like investment banking.

It's comparitively pretty easy getting to interview stage for a range of other graduate careers, going off personal experience.

Absolutely! And in reality the stats even within the Bar aren't fully useful in that they don't account for differences in people applying for civil/criminal sets, etc.

In response to whoever negged my post, my point was to clarify that there simply aren't 8000 individuals applying for pupillage every year and no more than that. It is unfortunate that somehow these guestimate figures are hurled around when the actual ones are only a very short google search away.

In terms of total numbers of applications, presumably they're significantly higher than 8000 given the simplicity of multiple applications through OLPAS; even if all applicants applied to only 6 sets, there would be over 17000 applications per year.

That's precisely what was meant by "o[f] whom many are reported to go back to practice in their home country" in my original post

My understanding is: CPS results and offers to be made on 13th august, which should (i stand to be corrected though) mean that if you get offered a pupillage on 2nd, you have 14 days to accept, and therefore time to wait for cps. If that is not right, please correct me!!

Presumably if you were fortunate enough to get a pupillage and CPS, you'd accept pupillage?

I wouldn't be so sure. At the moment, a CPS pupillage looks very attractive compared to a criminal pupillage at the independent criminal bar.

(unsure why this is being negged...hardly the most controversial thing to have been posted on this thread!)

Salaried pupillage at just shy of £22k v grant of £12k with the disbenefits of self-employed practice. Coupled with the locations of the CPS. A very attractive pupillage option. And yes, it is still a pupillage and you get to spend time in chambers, most probably a very well respected criminal set. Its a no brainer!!!
