If any prospective students are unsure about whether to go catered/ self-catered I found this article useful...www.redbrick.me/2014/10/more-for-your-money ...gives you an idea of what you might actually buy
Cool, thanks Are you enjoying birmingham? And do you find the union is good and have good events on most of the time?
yeah I love it so far and yeah its good, in the evening theres sports night every wednesday if you do any sport at all and from what I can remember its pretty fun, and then fab n fresh every saturday at the guild (that has a silent disco its so great) and then there are special events like tonight at the vale there were loads of fireworks and fairground rides and candyfloss and stuff it was super fun and there was fab n fireworks at the guild tonight but that sold out super fast I didnt get tickets and then like if you wanna go out more theres like gatecrashers mondays and stupid tuesdays and idk stuff on every day at various clubs in birmingham its fun, and it costs about £2 in taxi money to get to city centre (from pritchatts park at least, thats where I live)
Anybody know how do the different halls differ in terms of how social they are (parties etc etc)??
I'd say all the accommodations are lively and social, wherever you are there will be a party going on. The Vale is perceived as being more social because there's more people but when I've visited it hasn't seemed different to any of the other accommodations.

Does the university have lots of sports teams for all standards or do only the really good (county or above people) get into sports teams?
Some sports are very high level and some are mixed, you can find out at the sports fair they do at freshers. I wanted to do hockey but speaking to them I found that you had to be proper good at hockey to play. There's so much to offer so please don't worry about ability - I've never played the sport I play before uni and I train with GB standard players
Can any current students please advise on how likely it is to get a top accommodation choice if you apply on the first day of applications (Dec 1st)? Like can you play it tactfully and put your favoured accommodation 2nd or 3rd so you're more likely to be allocated it?

Accommodation allocation was really weird this year. I got my second choice, but people I know have gotten their last choice but applied early... And got their first choice and applied late... And applied middlish time and got no accommodation.

Well I'm thinking of putting Mason as my first choice, but I've heard people call Mason-ers names because it's really expensive is this true or do people not actually care?
That's true. I applied in mid-April and got my first choice. One of my coursemates applied relatively earlier and didn't even get any accommodation on campus (he's been allocated to a room in Liberty Close, which is one train stop away from the med school). My advice to all applicants would be to apply early but there's no guarantee you'll get your first choice, let alone any of your preferences.
I'm going to apply really early in the morning on the 1st

They are called Mason w__kers and there's a lot of teasing... but people in Maple Bank get called Maple W__nkers. And there's rivalry between Elgar Court and Maple Bank...
It's pretty light-hearted. I've been to pres at Mason and gotten called a Maple W__nker and had 'poverty' yelled at me from Mason windows, but it's 100% fun and not mean. Don't worry about that stuff, the competitiveness is funny and the chants are great, just get stuck in and don't mean what you say! (otherwise you're just mean oops)
Ah okay thanks! So in the vale there's not much difference eg tennis court & mason?
Hmmm, I don't live in either but I have friends in TC so I'll do a little extrapolating of what I know...
I think TC is more social, lots of events and they seem interconnected between the blocks, nice RAs that look out for you Mason has Made in Mason nights out and they seem a rowdy bunch on freshers nights out Maple Bank (MY HALLS BEST HALLS OK) are so close, everyone loves each other and helps out, amaze pres and nights out, fundraising events too - we had bucket shaking at Bristol with a night out and meal out for £7! Aitken I'm sure are lovely... but I don't see much of them... I don't actually know where their hall is even though it's on the Vale, but I'm sure they're just the same as us Liberty Close/Garden/Court are so far away! I know people who live there and the distance from campus is the biggest negative. IQ is in Five Ways, and I have one friend from there, again nice but farrrrrr Shackleton is just above the Hub on the Vale, literally has everything you need, I think they're really good for socials and things like that Selly Oak is a bit rough but it has take aways and Aldi and Lidl and train station and everything and it's cheap and really sociable, please don't feel if you end up in Selly you're missing out. You're also 5-10mins from campus so you're laughing at people on the Vale
Basically wherever you go, you'll find people you like and events to go out on, and please ignore my bias toward Maple
I think that's all the accommodation options? If I missed one out please say and I'll tell you about that one too, haha
