Questions about York St John Accommodation?
Hey, looking to go to York St John next year to study Psychology and I was just wondering about the accommodation?
I was wondering what the studio apartments are like-I heard there were two halls with studio apartments-Jessop house and another house. Also wondering what the bathrooms are like and whether they are proper bathrooms. What is the social life like in the studio apartments and are the people generally friendly?

Also wondering about the other en suite accommodation in the halls. I hear city residence is quite good. What are the en suite bathrooms like in the other halls (not just city residence)? Are there any en suite rooms with proper bathrooms (a necessity for me I'm afraid)?

    Thanks!

the studio apartments are at oercys lane and greys wharf, these are the most likely to have a proper bathroom, but still may not. You can ring up the Unis accomodation office to ask. The social life is obviously a lot less, as you don't live with anyone and therefore have to make a lot more effort to make friends. But people at ysj are very friendly imo. City residence is very nice but doesn't have a proper bathroom.
Why is a proper bathroom a necessity?
If it is for disiblity reasons then ysj has accom specifically for disabled people. However if you want a proper bathroom (ie with a bath) then the only ones I've seen are in the grange (st marys house) which are not en suite.
Edit: by saying they aren't a proper bathroom I mean they arerather small, with a shower, sink & toilet.

Sorry I should have made this more clear! When I meant proper bathroom I'm not bothered about a bath, just a ok shower. I visited a friend at uni recently and her shower is a pipe coming out of the wall which floods the floor. I'm not expecting anything flashy but I'd like a shower that doesn't do that.

Hi, I go to York St John at the moment and I live in Percy's Lane Percy's Lane and Grey's Wharf in my opinion is the best! Well all have en-suite, the bathrooms are very tiny but excellent, the shower is better than my shower at home! If you apply for a medium room, the bathrooms are likely to be larger than the standard bedrooms. I wouldn't advise staying in studios are the social life isn't that great. It's quite harder making new friends at the start unless you go over and knock on everybody elses doors. You usually share a flat with four others, although there is one flat on the ground floor I have heard which has four flatmates altogether. The grange is the only accommodation which I'm aware of which has wireless, but with Percy's/Grey's morrisons is just over the road, although it is ten/fifteen minutes away from uni, but the security is excellent compared to the others. Does that answer your query? If not, please ask!

Hi, just seen your post and wondered if you could answer a few questions . I'm trying to decide whether to put YSJ as my firm or not, I love the campus but I was just wondering what uni life is actually like there? Also, what do you think of York as a general city (e.g. nightlife), it's not something I'll be basing my decision on, but I'd just like to know what it's like x

Hi! Sorry! I've just seen your post. I love York. It has every shop in the city centre except for Primark! There's tons of pubs and nightclubs, you won't get bored and there's so many societies at uni as well such as cheerleading, climbing, netball, hockey, sci-fi, orchestra.... the lot! You get really close to your flatmates and floormates and on my floor we have a movie night every few weeks or so and "family meals" where we each cook something. I really recommend it! Leeds isn't that far away as well.

Ah it's fine thanks for replying. I've put York down as my definite firm, and applied for accomodation today. I'm really excited but slightly gutted that there is no Primark! Haha. But yeah, it sounds really good, thankyou . Just out of interest, which course do you do?

Both of them have their own advantages. City residence is closer by about a min or two and everyone has their own ensuites. Grange though is by far the best for parties and socialising however there are certain times you are allowed to enter the accommodation block from the front, you have to enter through the back gates between 11pm and 7am. Hope this helps

Re: Questions about York St John Accommodation?
I live on The Grange and although it can be a pain if you get in from something after 11pm, you can just cut through City Residence, its not a massive problem. I found the Grange really good for socialising as it is close to Uni (so you can stay out that little bit later as it is 5 mins walk from uni so don't need to leave for lectures that early). Also my accomodation there is 5 of us on the floor, we share a bathroom, seperate shower (that we share), kitchen and dining area. Its really good in the sense that you can be a little family and we have found that it works.

We each have a sink in our bedrooms so getting washed in the morning means that we don't have to que up for the 1 bathroom and when someone has drank a few to many the night before, the sink is usually closer than the bathroom if you catch my drift.

The wireless is really good as well. If your anything like me and like watching iPlayer or DVD's in bed you can as the desk is at the other end of the room. The rooms are a good size. I do Music and brought a keyboard, 2 trombones, clarinet, sax, flute and guitar and although I am on the top floor there is loads of room even with the instruments.

The only downside I have found is that some of the walls can be very thin. (Only been a problem for us if the person in the next room has their other half around so bring ear plugs!)

Contrary to what has been said, The Grange is closer than city res. I'm happy with the accommodation I got and I've looked around all the other accommodation through mates living in other area's and I personally think that Baldwin (a house in the grange) is really good for what we pay for. Also we get the place for 48 weeks so its really good if you get a job in York and need to stay over the holidays!

Any questions about The Grange let me know and I will try and answer them

I never had an interview for film and television so I wouldn't actually know, I'm sorry! I would guess any portfolio work though, like bring a dvd or something? The course is really good, I've really enjoyed it. You get to make two documentaries and two fiction pieces and sometimes the lecturers can be a bit useless but it's still really good fun. In first year though your practical work isn't graded and whether you pass your modules or not all depends on your essays! The screenwriting module is group work. You can also help out on 3rd years/master student films which gives you loads of experience and contacts!

There is a gate which is closed at 11pm, blocking off the shortest route into the Grange after this time. You have to walk around and go through the ginnel next to City Res, it doesn't take that long.
