AHRC Funding at multiple Universities

Hi everybody,

I've recently finished my MA in History from the University of Warwick where I achieved a Distinction. I'm applying to go back to University to do a PhD and want to apply to several different universities to keep my options open and to increase my chances. Problem is, I'm hearing mixed messages about AHRC funding. In some places I have heard that you can only apply for AHRC funding once to only one institution, whereas elsewhere I've read that you can do it as much as you want. Anyone able to clarify this?

To show an example: http://www.graduateschool.bham.ac.uk/rsa/researchcouncils/ahrc.shtml
If you look at the 'application' doc, it says that your application may be withdrawn if you apply to several different institutions.

Bit confused. I've known people who have been fortunate to have offers of AHRC funding from different universities, so were they breaking the rules?

Any advice welcome!
Many thanks,
Joe
