Publishing Houses

I'm trying to get hold of a week's worth of work experience this summer in a publishing house, at the bidding of my school. The fact that neither me nor any of my classmates have finished our GCSEs yet has proved to be a bit of a problem, but I've managed to secure a week in a couple of other professions. And now it's time for publishing!

I'm intending to follow the same tactic I did to get my other placements, which was basically call up all the relevant businesses in the area until I found someone willing to look at my CV. The trouble with publishing is that I can't think of very many publishing houses off the top of my head, and the Yellow Pages is not proving helpful. :rolleyes:

I would be very grateful if you could post the names of any publishing companies you know of that have offices in London, however famous or unknown they may be. Preferably I would like publishing houses that publish fiction (as opposed to science journals, etc), but otherwise I'm open to any suggestions. If you can think of one but they don't usually take anyone except gap year students, graduates, etc, please post the company name anyway - I'll just keep it safe until I'm older!

Also, if you have any useful tips for applying to publishing houses... I'm all ears!

These are listed as children's book phouses but most do other types of fiction too if you click on them and go to their sites.. there are famous and relatively unknown choices.

It's not to hard getting work experience at Penguin, they are on the Strand and are very nice.
