Is it a waste of time studying at low ranked universities?
For example, studying at southampton solent... Is that a waste of time?

What I mean by a waste of time is would it be a waste of money to study there as employers wouldn't rate your university, therefore you'd be employed into a low paid job?

And I mean no disrespect to those studying/studied at soton solent.

No, it is not a waste of time.

Tbh if I was an employer, I'd care more about whether or not the candidate achieved the 2:1 rather than what they got at A level (which is essentially the university you attend).

Nahh I don't think so.. A good qualification at a bad university is still a good qualification.

    On this forum, yes.

    The real world, no.

The most successful person in my entire family went to Bournemouth University. This is up against people who went to Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Bath and Imperial. Fair enough, if you want to go into investment banking, or law in one of the top firms in London, then 'where' you got your degree will make a difference, but other than those types of jobs, it won't matter too much, what YOU do with it is the deciding factor.

It cannot be a waste of time if you have no alternative. If you have alternatives to studying at soton solent, let us know or forever hold your peace!!

It's hardly a waste of time, since you'll still get a degree which should theoretically get you a better job than if you don't have a degree.

Employees favor students from certain degrees and universitys. I'm in the process of applying for placements and lots of employees target the management school because it's one of the best in the country. The bigger employers have a dedicated graduate employement section and they know whats good and whats not.

After you've missed the graduation jobs, I suppose what uni you went to will mean less and it will be more on what grade you got and what modules you studied. It will also be more difficult to find a job.

London Metropolitan University - the worst University in the UK - wasn't a waste of time for these people:

-Adel Al-Mouwdah, Deputy Speaker of Bahrain's first elected parliament and president of Salafist party, Asalah
-Zoë Ball, TV and radio presenter
-Lord Bilimoria, founder and chief executive of Cobra Beer
-Noel Clarke, director, screenwriter and actor
    -Alannah Currie, artist
    -Anita Chanda, artist
    -Tracey Emin, artist
    -Francis French, historian and author
    -Kate Hoey, Member of Parliament
    -Sadiq Khan, Member of Parliament
-Gareth Howell, former parliamentary lobbyist and political campaigner
-Nick Leeson, 'rogue' trader who caused the collapse of Barings Bank
    -Maimie McCoy, actress
    -Alison Moyet, pop singer
-Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, King of the Ashanti
    -Lord Puttnam, film director
    -Vic Reeves, comedian
-Daniela Ruah, actress, most notably NCIS: Los Angeles
    -Edwin Smith, photographer
-Irwin Sparkes, front-man of pop band The Hoosiers
    -Peter Tatchell Human Rights Campaigner
-Neil Tennant, from the Pet Shop Boys
    -Jamie Theakston, TV presenter
    -Nick Tolhurst, Author & Commentator
-Charlie Whelan, Gordon Brown's former spin doctor
    -Malcolm Wicks, Member of Parliament
    -Oritse Williams, member of JLS

But always aspire to get into higher Universties.

It was some sort of animation/computer related degree, so to be fair its pretty specialist meaning not many uni's would actually offer it. Not too sure what the job actually entails as its my cousin whom i'm not very close with, but he got offered the job by a company before he'd finished the degree due to some work he did for them, which also got published for something or other. He also got put on a starting salary of around 34k, which is pretty incredible for a first proper salary.

For this post to have any relevance you would have to state how going to London Met got them those particular jobs.

Depends on if you think you can get better results. For law, where you go is essential. What are your marks and subjects?
