I have always been fascinated by rocks and such, due to that I want to study Geology. However I would like to know what are the best universities for Geology.

Thank you very much for your help.

Would you prefer a more maths heavy earth science course? Also, what sort of grades are you looking at?

I would like a normal math, not to heavy or to light. Currently I'm taking the IB diploma with the following subjects and predicted grades.

    English A1 Higher - 6
    Geography Higher - 5
    History Higher - 6
    Math Studies - 5
    Chemistry Standard - 5
    Spanish A2 Standard - 5

Those grades might be hard to get you into the "best". I would say Imperial College is one of the best for Geology, as oxbridge don't offer a "Geology" course, but rather "earth science" and "natural science" courses, meaning you would have to study other things too. However the problem is that your subjects don't allow you to qualify for Imperial (you need Grade 6 at Higher level in 2 subjects from Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biology and Geography.). You would also need 38 points, which you can probably achieve if you try hard enough. If you really want to get into the top universities for Geology I would recommend you to study over the summer and take Chemistry higher in November, to reapply the next year.

    ^ Good advice.

Oxford does actually offer a 3 year geology degree or a 4 year earth science degree.

OP, if you don't want a maths heavy degree then the top departments such as Oxford and Imperial are not really recommended. I think Bristol puts quite a lot of focus on Maths too.

Leicester is supposed to be good, and no so mathsy.
    Opps, thanks for correcting me.

Yeah, this. You're taking mathematical studies so I assume you would prefer a degree with less math. I'm not sure about how much math you need for the Geology course at imperial, but it seems like you do quite a bit judging from the above post.

Yeah, I see a problem with the subjects I currently have. Would you know then of any good schools for Geology apart from the ones you've already said?

Leicester, Exeter, Leeds, Southampton, Birmingham. There are plenty of good schools around, just have a good look at the different courses to get an idea for which ones suit you better. As for which ones are best, it can be a bit subjective, and as I doubt many people have had much experience of a large number of them so no one can say for sure. League tables can vary a lot (as they all use different criteria - some of which you may disagree with), but sometimes useful to get a rough idea of which ones are generally considered good (and which universities actually offer the course!).

    Hi there
I haven't heard many good things about the course at Imperial (it doesn't seem to be very well rated in the geology world, despite what the league tables say)... Oxbridge is always going to be a favourite with employers however, you need to be honest with yourself, are you really going to fit in there? Will you thrive under the intense pressure of the short semesters?
Leicester would be my recommendation... lots of lecturers are very highly regarded!!
    Hope this helps

Leicester is relatively mathsy! There is a whole unit of pure maths in the first year and there are topics that rely on a sound understanding of maths. However there is maths help available if you really think it's going to be a problem.

Sure ok . I swear I came across a post on here from someone at Leicester who said it wasn't particularly maths intensive :dontknow:. But you go there so you know more than me . I have to admit, I do have a bit of a soft spot for Leicester. It was at Leicester university that I decided geology was definitely for me. Great department.

We have a whole module of maths in the first year so... :P
Leicester swung me to Geology too and I must admit I am more than happy with my decision!!

I felt a bit like I was cheating on Leicester when I decided to firm Imperial instead . Glad to hear it Yeah we have maths modules too. Of course, if people are looking for lots of maths then geophysics is the way to go!

Ranked higher than Oxford in Earth and Marine sciences actually, and the department has a satisfaction rating around the region of 96%. Don't hate.

Imperial is awesome and I love it. Very well organised department, exceptional teaching and it's just generally great.

Imperial could be one of my choices for geology as my neighbours friend who works for VNG said it had amazing job aspects and i liked the fact it was easy to transfer from geology to geophysics as i dont know what to choose. However, its in london and cities scare me (but Ill have to go to a city for uni anyway) and its expensive which is my main concern.

You seem extremely enthusiastic about imperial so i dont know whether you could tempt me?

Haha sure. Yeah I was scared of the city too. I'm very much a country bumpkin . It's really not scary though. You get used to it. I like that the university is in a very nice area with large green areas and Hyde Park just a 5 minute walk away. You could stay in the same area and just pretend you're in a smaller city . I don't really feel like I'm in an enormous city and I fell comfortable as I have a good group of friends and the department is very friendly. I feel very much at home. Yes, it can be expensive, but you will get a larger loan. There's also an option to share bedrooms which can take the cost of accommodation down substantially.

It's probably easier to PM me if you want to ask questions .
