Do people actually get kicked out failing their exams :s-smilie:?

Yes, it happened to one of my friends in first year.

So...What do other colleges think of Caius?

...nobody's ever heard of us. :'C

Pretty, but terrible formals, and they make their students live ages away from college and force them to pay for a fixed number of meals. [That's what springs to mind when I think of Caius anyway :p:] The Stephen Hawking Building is very nice though.

What's Fitzwilliams like? All I gathered was that everyone's super friendly.

Has any one heard of cambridge giving an offer by mistake? I don't think I did that well at interview and somehow got an offer, and I'm just really insecure about it. Thanks

Apparently it has happened before because they have a section about it in the admissions handbook if I recall correctly. It warned admissions tutors not to make those mistakes as they may feel compelled to go through with the offer anyway if the applicant complains.

If there are no mitigating circumstances then yes, you are usually kicked out or at least made to resit the year if you fail to obtain honours in a year and get an Ordinary.

Put it this way. I heard a fresher tried to pronounce it "Gon-vi-lee and Kai-Us"

That's true actually! Just to get to dinner, we had to trek through some muddy park, dodgy alleyway and rocky (exaggeration) pavements against the darkness and rain.

But yeah The Stephen Hawking Building is very cool. But Stephen Hawking cooler. :P!!!

So what's are stereotype? - e.g.: friendly (Okay that's Emmanual apparently), cool, nerdy?

To be fair "Kai-Us" sounds cooler than "Keys"!!! At least it's an unique name :P.

PERFECT!! I was looking for one of these threads like 2 minutes ago. Right, I have quite the list... any questions answered would be great =D (just got an offer for maths at Sidney btw)

The terms are quite short, can you come early/stay later? I mean this always seemed like a mega negative for me... how does everyone find it?

What is the LGBT side of things like? (just generally =])

Do people often socialise with people from other colleges or do they stay within their own college?

You pretty much answered my question about social life. I mean sure I want to study and I love my subject but I want the 'experience' so it is nice to hear that most people do manage to go out etc.

Oh and societies, are they a university or college thing. I mean are they university societies or college ones? if you get what I'm saying.

If I think of any more I will post them =p

to expand on what Doughnuts!! had to say-

room licences typically start like 10 days before the start of term and finish 10 days after the end of academic term. i think you can ask to keep your room all year round (except summer) at every college. it's good to have longer breaks, more time to earn spare cash/ go stay with friends/ escape the cambridge bubble somehow!

lively. all the lgbt kids i've met seem pretty  with that side of things, and the society have lots of different stuff going on every week e.g. club nights, lunch socials- although i don't know that many people who feel the need to get involved with the society side of things. google 'CUSU LGBT'

depends on the person- i know quite a lot of people at other colleges and count some of them amongst my closest friends, i assume most use lectures and swaps as an opportunity to mix, some don't feel the need to expend their social circle outside their college at all. some colleges are cliquier than others and as a very general assumption, i reckon students at the women's and the smaller colleges feel the need to get out and socialise with others more. in short- you absolutely should if you can/want to- it's a really good thing to do for your own sense of social security (i.e. having people to hang out with when your own college gets claustrophobic!) and it's very healthy for your college's reputation- but don't feel like you NEED to make friends from other colleges- a lot of people don't.

going out is a priority for many students. our nightclubs are legendary and it's reasonable to schedule and maintain a '5-night-week' during your first term and still get a first. cindies on a wednesday is regarded by many as 'not optional'!

there are both uni-wide and college societies- colleges tend to have societies just for the most popular interests though (think sports teams, music, theatre).

Christ's has the cutest, friendliest cat called Milton. It can play a major role in the life of Christ's undergraduates, sitting on your window sill ( especially if you are on a ground floor building, e.g. in W, Y, New court) and offering essential pastoral, moral and academic support.

Sounds like a nice cat. I hope this rumoured Pembroke cat is still there if I meet my offer.

Well, you clearly seem to have an affinity for cats, so for your sake I hope so too . I am still yet to visit Pembroke actually, but it's on my to do list for this term.

I have been reliably informed that Stephen Hawking attends your formal hall. Although the quality of food is questionable by reputation, this does make me want to attend Caius formal at some point.

Folks, I am also taking questions.

Hii! Is the Homerton library all new and not Hogwarts-y? I think I remember seeing a picture once and thinking '... Oh :frown:' But in any case - is it adequate?

also seeking an answer to this, it seems to be a reputation-less college (unlike me)

Yes, do visit, it's so lovely  Very pretty and very peaceful for a central college. It's sort of a bit like Christ's in a way, in that there's a good variety of architecture and it's quite spacious.

I want to meet Stephen Hawking too...how often does he attend these formal halls, exactly? :ahee:

Trinity/John's= Pretentious pricks. I've got really good friends at these colleges but some of my friends from my college have actually found the stereotype to be true when they've encountered people from those colleges.

King's= Really politically active and left-wing. 'Tis true.
Peterhouse= Conservative bunch of homosexuals apparently.
Sidney Sussex= The 'Sainsbury's' college
Magdalene= Very traditional.
Girl's colleges= Feminist bunch of lesbian sluts. Not entirely true, though I have met many a girl that lives up to aspects of the stereotype.
St Catharine's= AWESOME. And super duper friendly.
Girton= Erm...where? :s-smilie:
Homerton= See above. But also quite friendly.
Selwyn= The 'Sidgwick' college as it's closest to the Sidgwick site.
Downing= The lawyer's college due to the vast amount of Law students there!

Not really sure about reputations of the other colleges tbh...

i sincerely hope this does not pertain to whom i think it may possibly pertain.

also, revisions to this

trinity- agreed. bit cliquey and don't seem to mix outside their college much
john's- like to play up to the 'posh' stereotype but everyone i've ever met from there has actually been very nice and they're quite welcoming to guests from other colleges!
king's- agreed. also very chilled out and super friendly. get the impression it's so large that it's impossible to know a large fraction of your classmates
peterhouse- agreed. 'poofterhouse'! though nobody i've met from there seems to conform, there are quite a few very individual types as well.
sidney- agreed
magd- agreed, plus the guys are supposed to be quality prey.
downing- same as magd
newn- better than mudwards
mudwards- worse than newn
lucy cav- cougars
catz- agreed. sometimes aggressively friendly! lots of fun but i get the impression it's a little intense at times
girton- what on earth i don't even
homerton- <3. lovely and friendly, nice place to live, good social side!
tit hall- see homerton
clare- see tit hall ad homerton
selwyn- agreed but it shares that honour with newn. it's effectively newnham, but traditionally 'cambridge', and with boys.
wolfson- got wolves (male version of cougars fyi)
emma- s'cool. it's a great college and very popular but those at other colleges often feel it's a tad overrated
queens- see emma. also a bit homo (and mostly famous just for stephen fry)
churchill- possibly the only remaining boys' college. most people will never meet a churchill female. exceedingly right wing.
christs- academic, though people i've met have mostly disproved the stereotype. pretentious at worst, wild fun at best.
pembroke- always high.
corpus- occasionally protesty yet otherwise nondescript. i get the impression it's highly underrated tho...
caius- their formal is ghastly.
jesus- keen.

i'll update when i think of more!
