it was originally an optimistic battle cry/shout of victory (not sure how else to phrase it concisely!)
it basically means 'whoever says the following will be happy: true/eternal is the great/timeless lord (god)'
    or something to that effect
you can read a loger and better explanation on wikipedia and sikhiwiki
btw where from pakistan are you from?
cos my grandparents were born there!
really, where? im from jhelum city, my mums side of the family come from amritsar but i dont know where exactly.

(i'm terrible at arguing my opinion online, but about the drinking thing...)
i agree that it doesn't necessarily make you a better person if you don't drink, but it does usually have a negative effect on the person's mind...
a sikh should always be alert and in control of themself
i guess it is more of an issue if a baptised sikh is drinking, but it seems a bit unfaithful for even an unbaptised sikh to drink, doesn't it?

Agreed, being from a Punjabi background does not mean you are neccesarily religious, and I think it is unfair highjacking this thread just to voice your religious views. If anything we should be discussing the various cultures in Punjab: dance, food, drink, rituals and anything else that comes to mind:bhangra:

    BANG ON TRACK BTW.

Who says anyone was hijacking a thread? :lolwut:

Being Punjabi USUALLY means that culture and religion plays a part in your life, whether you are religious or not. India itself is a cultural place, alot of its traditions, dance, food , drink and rituals are influenced by religion/culture.
Its not that far-fetched that RELIGION, NAMELY SIKHISM WHICH ORIGINATED FROM PUNJAB, should be mentioned.

Also, there's nothing wrong with having a bit of interesting and contrasting conversation here tbh. If you're getting offended by anything said here so far, you should possibly open your mind up a little. :pierre:

Anyway yeah, I had a samosa earlier today, it was well nice.
