Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012
We (family of 4) will be in one of the family flats at Bowsden Court from September, not sure which flat number because my wife has all the letters as she will start her degree at Newcastle in September. I will be commuting to Durham each day once I start in October.
The Uni told us that it is not that common for both parents in family accomodation to be students which surprised us.
We also have confirmed places at a local school and a local college for the two kids.
Just waiting now.... -
Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012
Hey I am a prospective postgraduate student for Newcastle uni
I have a question regarding cancelation of the accomodation contract.
What happens if I accept an offer for accomodation (i have an offer for Leazes Terrace) and then due to problems that come up I am not able to attend??
This would include informing the university prior to my arrival and prior to the start of the programme.
Please this is very important, any info would be very helpful. -
Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012Is Central Link as quiet as people make it out to be? I didn't want anything like Ricky Road, but equally if it is ridiculously quiet then that would be quite disappointing.(Original post by NWA)
Hey, i've just finished first year and i stayed in Central Link. If anyone has any questions about it feel free to ask
Assuming Central Link is quiet, how easy was it to socialise with other halls. Can you go to Ricky Road for the 'hall parties' or are they only for people who live there?
How do Central Link allocate the floors, are Newcastle University students all grouped together within each floor, or are you mixed with Northumbria etc?
Nerd question now; Seen a thread below about the internet in Newcastle Uni owned halls being really restrictive ie. not being able to go on Steam/Skype/Xbox live/online games. Is this also the case with Central-Link? I don't intend to be doing heavy gaming but the odd casual game (especially considering Diablo 3 is a single player which is online only...) and not being able to Skype would be a huge kick in the teeth.
Was Central Link your first choice? I applied on the day Accomm opened and put it as my first choice, but I am a conditional offer holder, what do you think the chances are of me getting it as I'd imagine gap year students could potentially fill it up like they do with Windsor Terrace and Castle Court etc?
Sorry for all the questions haha, what was your overall experience with Central Link, did you enjoy it and would you recommend it etc? -
It is worth a try. I heard that they did a couple of times, but i wouldnt count on it. However, you can sign up for a swap in november after everyone is allocated a place, so if you wanted to go to lets say castle court, and you were in st mary's, then if there is anyone who wants to go to st mary's from castle court, they would arrange a swap for you(Original post by lauraatkinson120)
I have applied for my accomodation but im not too keen on where i have been allocated; If i rang up and asked if i could be moved into my prefered choice do you think they would do this?

Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012
Hi!!!
I am a Spanish student applying for an Msc in Mechatronics. Unfortunedly I'm not going to meet the conditions for the application until a week before the registration.
So I have to look for an accomodation to rent outside the campus, do you have any suggestions?
thank you very much,

I put down central link as my second accommodation under a conditional offer and i definitely had a good year there. Central link is quite quiet in comparison to Ricky Road however during freshers there were constant flat parties all over, however these died down as freshers finished. You can socialise in other flats around Uni such as Ricky Road but i didn't do this as my flat was sociable and we got on really well.
As for arrangements they put the first years together in blocks A and block B, Block C is mainly second year students and international students. As for Northumbria students i don't think there was any in Central Link this year.
The internet at central link is separate to the university internet, so you can use Skype and online gaming such as steam etc and xbox live. You have the choice out of a free 4mb standard internet (which i used, and is still fast, even for xbox live) or you can pay extra for 30mb, 80mb and even 100mb!
I'd definitely recommend central link for first years. -
Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012Thanks, makes me look forward to it even more. Was worried that it would be eerily quiet. I'm not too bothered about it being party central, just as long as it is sociable and people aren't just living in their rooms never to be seen for the entire year. This was perhaps my main concern.(Original post by NWA)

Sounds great, hopefully I can get it, an ensuite room would be amazing. -
Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012I put castle court as first and got windsor terrace too.. when we visited castle court and leazes looked a lot busier and I hoped as a gap year-er my earlier application might get me first choice! What part of windsor terrace are you in?(Original post by -Taz-)
I applied early-mid April
Yeah i am a bit disappointed about not getting to Castle Court but oh well

Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012From living in Ricky Road, they are usually just pre drinks before people go out attended by other people in the block and friends though we always used to have coursefriends over and people people knew from home(Original post by PVisitors)

You can get on Skype across uni, infact theres a place in the library specifically set out for using Skype(Original post by PVisitors)
and not being able to Skype would be a huge kick in the teeth. -

Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012Hi Jamal(Original post by Jamal B)
Has anyone put down St Mary's as their first choice? I'm a conditional holder so I'm yet to hear, I'm just interested to see how many have applied
I put St Mary's down as 1st choice, and have been accepted (had unconditional offer).
Maybe see you in September! -
Re: Newcastle accommodation thread 2012Who's knows, I might do(Original post by ZRR10)

I haven't actually had a chance to look around the accommodation in person, so it could be interesting...
