Absolutely, when I went on an open day to Ricky road it reminded me of a prison cell  it was so small and the walls are basically just bricks which have been painted  Uni life is what you make of it and I have found St Marys to be really sociable, plus there are always events going on in the common room so you cen carry on meeting new people throughout the year!

Is Newcastle your firm choice? What course are you doing?

And the outside looked a bit like old flats from the sixties, just with not as many floors haha this is a great advertisement for Ricky Road :P
I've never had many issues socialising with people before - I doubt I'm going to start at 20!!

Yeah I have an Unconditional from Newcastle so will definitely be going in September  Will be doing Combined Honours, in English and History, maybe Media too. I haven't decided about Media yet.
What do you study?

Ok this might sound stupid but I was just applying for accomodation and one of the questions is "What is the most important factor to you?" and the 3 options are
- Wash facilities
- City location
- Low budget

By wash facilities do they mean access to laundrettes or are they talking about en-suites etc?? Sorry if this sounds really stupid!!

Oh AND what exactly is the difference between single standard en-suite and premium/deluxe en-suite??

Wash facilities are no washbasin, washbasin or en-suite. And a deluxe en-suite tends to be a bigger room with a double bed I think (that's what they were in Castle Court when I went anyway)

Haha we aren't exactly showing off Ricky roads good points such as.... (I don't think there is any good points:confused:) I think parts of Ricky road are being knocked down and rebuilt in order to try and modernise the flats e.g. putting washbasins in every flat and 2 toilets/showers per flat instead of 1.

I study Business Management, not the most exciting degree in the world but I'll get through it.

If you can look past the looks of the place it's amazing (Ricky was actually constructed after the blue-prints of a norwegian prison).

However, it was a great place to spend first year and having spent a canny few nights in other halls would say they're all pretty much the same. Victoria halls were ****e, but that may have been more the people than the place itself.

One recommendation, anyone who is looking for flats for 2nd year. DON'T limit your search just to jesmon/west jesmond (especially if you don't want to be surrounded by mini-driving rah's in their jack wills pj's and flip flops).
Heaton is actually a much better place, alive and full of the arty-kind. As is the quayside (heaton cheaper, quayside pretty much the same).

I've heard that you have a great time in Ricky Road though. So I suppose it's not bad, once you get used to the prison-like buildings haha Refurbishment is always a plus - and having no washbasins atm seems a bit silly. I actually think that was the main point that put me off it, and I think I'd cry if I got put there.

And not exactly exciting, but I suppose it will be useful? I've never really been business and economics minded, but Events Management has always appealed to me! It's one of two things I'd love to go into once I graduate (atm anyway, because that's always changing haha) The other being Publishing.

I hear that the lifestyle from living at Ricky road is meant to be the best but personally as long as you live in a flat where everyone is up for having a good time and having a laugh, then you can have a great time living anywhere. I preferred st marys simply because whilst it isn't one of the most popular choices, it has really nice bedrooms and kitchens.

Haha well the degree would be useful if I wanted to do something business-related at the end but I still don't know what I want to do :s-smilie: I too find something that I think would be good to do once I graduate, only to then change my mind further down line  Business tended to be the subject I did the best in at school so I kind of just stuck with it at uni.

I like the look of the bedrooms and kitchens  I actually can't wait, part of me wants to move now!! At leas then I know I'll be back at Uni, and know what I'm doing with myself rather than just kind of living right now.

Yeah but at least you have choices I suppose. I take it you're at the end of your first year? You've got a while yet before you have to think about it. I always wanted to be a teacher, until I was about 19. Then I decided, no that's not what I want to do haha I tend to go with the "stick to what you're good at/enjoy the most". It tends to work if I'm honest!

Don't worry just found out i can't go you have to be at Newcastle Uni. Why did i mess around at school..
I'm looking for self-catering, en-suite that doesn't cost the earth (about £100 p/w max?). Anyone got any ideas? I'm way behind on all this, as Newcastle is my insurance and I didn't think you had to apply for accommodation at your insurance?

Most of the s/c ensuite on campus is really oversubscribed so you won't have much of a chance if it's your insurance choice, as far as I know. I went for Bowsden Court which fits both of those criteria, but is about 2 miles away, for £94 a week. You might want to have a look at the less popular, further away options, because you'll have a better chance of being given those. Check them on the website - it looks like there are loads to choose from, but I think there's a convenient spreadsheet somewhere that details all the important bits

Is Bowsden popular then? Yeah it does look like there's loads on the website, looks very confusing, was looking around for a spreadsheet type thing so I could see where self-catering, en-suite is available. Thanks for your help :biggrin:

I don't think so. Most of the accom is on campus, so people are reluctant to move further away, the same as with Henderson Hall etc. Then again, for some of my other choices, all the accom was really far away and noone batted an eyelid  I'm not fussed about travelling and I don't want it to be manic where I live, so it seems ideal for me at least.

Yeah I don't mind travelling to be honest.. public transport seems pretty decent in Newcastle from what I've heard. Looking at that overview *thanks for the link* Henderson Hall and Bowsden look good. Castle Leazes looks pretty horrific from the outside to be honest! Wish I knew more about it all, feel a bit stupid for not realising you had to apply to accommodation at your insurance. Tempted to put St Mary's Hall down though.. very cheap, very pretty, nice communal area and a free bus to the uni.. Just wish it was en-suite!

Thanks for all your help:biggrin:

Have you been to uni before then? Yeah September seemed to take ages to come around for me last summer, but working full time kind of kept me occupied. I still can't believe I have been here nearly a year, only 5 weeks left  and then back to Manchester for the summer.

I was thinking about teaching, and I have taken a career module next year which lets me do teaching 1 day a week at a local school/college (we don't get to choose whether its primary, secondary or college :frown: ) I guess if I don't like it, then at least I have tried it. People tend to enjoy the things they are good at so it made sense to carry on with business even though this is my 7th year in a row of doing a business related course!
Hi. I'm moving up to Newcastle in September to study Musical Theatre at Newcastle College, but I'm having a hard time finding any accommodation. Can anyone offer any help? What is the best way to find people to get together to look for accomodation? Thankyou.

I have yeah, I did one year at Durham doing Ancient History, but hated it, failed Latin, and dropped out. So this is my "gap yahh" (but not a very good one) and I'm just sat waiting to go to Newcastle haha

I used to want to teach, but did a few weeks of work experience in high school and college that put me off teaching a bit. I also had a job working in a children's play area that made me think, I could not do this 5 days out of 7. I think I could do it, if I was guaranteed to go to like a sixth form... I'm just finding other options now other than teaching

Just wondering if anyone knows how we find out about accommodation? Like do we receive information of where we've been allocated by email or post?

Newcastle College have their own accommodation scheme
http://www.ncl-coll.ac.uk/undergraduate/full-time/accommodation.aspx

They provide information about private accommodation too
http://www.ncl-coll.ac.uk/international/accommodation/private-accommodation.aspx

If you live in private accom (might be a bit cheaper), you can find a flatmate through 'find a flatemate' websites:
http://uk.easyroommate.com/
http://www.gumtree.com/flatshare/newcastle
http://www.spareroom.co.uk/
http://www.accommodationforstudents.com/Newcastle.asp

Or you could contact student letting agencies, a lot of them will arrange a flatshare for you.

Ah, so at least you kind of know what to expect when you come to uni in September. When I first started uni, it was nothing like I thought it would be like, but in a good way. I didn't realise that we would so few hours of contact, I've only had 14 hours of lectures and seminars this year.

I think whatever accommodation you end up in, you will learn to make the best of it. Hopefully you are given your first choice though

Well I'm going to try it out and see what I think of it. I have no idea what I want to do when I'm older so if I try out many different possibilities I should hopefully find something I like! *fingers crossed*
Hi!

Ah, I applied for accommodation really late (no more than two weeks ago) and my first three choices are all s/c en-suites... how hopeless is it that I'll actually get into one of these? I hear people who applied as soon as possible still didn't get into their top choices.

My three top choices are:
- Central Link
- Victoria Halls
- Castle Court

Are they all really oversubscribed? Should I prepare myself for utter disappointment? :frown:
