Re: Warwick Firm/Insurers 2012!Don't worry, London is so overhyped..and King's is a second tier London school (joke)(Original post by Gigamonkey)
Hi, I am probably putting Warwick down as my first choice, with RHUL second. Would be turning down a place at King's.Last edited by Tsunami2011; 08-04-2012 at 04:00. -
Re: Warwick Firm/Insurers 2012!Well do you think King's is better than Warwick then?(Original post by Tsunami2011)

Re: Warwick Firm/Insurers 2012!Personally no.. King's doesn't seem to be a top 10 university, and the london factor seems to be one of its main selling points. Warwick is usually compared with Durham, St Andrews and UCL, whilst King's doesn't seem to be(Original post by Gigamonkey)

Warwick is pretty consistently in the top 10 for everything. Only thing is that my degree would be Classics, which is about 4th best done at King's, between 10th and 20th best done at Warwick. Would an employer look into that kind of statistic do you think? (ie. quality of subject at that uni, rather than quality of uni overall?)

Re: Warwick Firm/Insurers 2012!I just checked the guardian and Warwick is 6th for Classics with King's 7th? and in the Complete university guide Warwick is 5th King's is 10th( Obviously rankings are flawed but they are a good general guide).. Most employers seem to look at the overall university, largely because a specific degree isn't needed for the majority of graduate schemes. Most recruiter won't even know how good a university is for a particular subject, and will just consider its general reputation..(Original post by Gigamonkey)
OK thanks

Out of interest why are you not considering King's? -

I was considering King's until a recent open day. The subject talk seemed really complacent, distant and not even interesting really. The university felt like all it cares about is you getting high marks when you go, rather than enjoying the course. It didn't feel personal. Also I realised that I am probably not ready to live in London, as it's pretty daunting to me (I live in the countryside and have never lived in a city). Other people seem desperate to go to London for the nightlife but there is a good nightlife almost anywhere anyway, and even so I am not putting a good nightlife ahead of anything else. I just had a good feeling when I went to Warwick, and then when I went up to King's it just didn't feel at all comparible. Another thing is the workload seemed huuuuuge at King's, and un-necessarily so. On many levels I think Warwick suits me personally better.
Are you at Warwick? Why did you choose it ahead of your other options (and what were your other options?) -
Re: Warwick Firm/Insurers 2012!haha fair enough! Both are great universities, and a few places in the league table, really won't an awful lot! I had a similar feeling at LSE so can relate to you completely! I've lived in London all my life, and I'm quite suprised by how TSRians seem to think the streets of London are paved with gold judging by their perception of it(Original post by Gigamonkey)

From what I've heard London is not suited to students, largely because students are just a side aspect of the city, unlike other cities where the city almost revolves around the students. The nightlife is London (bar the seedy clubs) is also quite expensive in comparision to other cities, and unlike other cities, you won't get many 'student offer' £1 shots, since you'll be going to the same bars/clubs as professionals so they will charge full price. In London, the campuses are all detached, which erases any homely feeling. The London universities are great in their own way, but from speaking to friends it seems like they aren't great for socialising and making long-lasting friends, since lots of students are commuters or internationals!
I'm not at Warwick! but most probably firming for Law! my other choices were Cambridge, LSE, Nottingham and Birmingham! rejection from the first, and offers from the latter three.

Re: Warwick Firm/Insurers 2012!I agree with what you say about the aspect of the city "revolving around the students". Obviously with Coventry I felt like it was a student town, and that's one of the things I really loved about it actually. One of my concerns about King's was that friends you meet at lectures/out/wherever are likely to be living a long way away from you, and that isolation (as opposed to a homey feeling) is something I felt at the open day. At my school Nottingham seems to be everyone's top choice (can you guess why...? lol). I just want to go somewhere where the people are cool, the atmosphere is relaxed and the standard is high. = Warwick(Original post by Tsunami2011)

URGENT: Can someone please tell me if PPE is a Band 1 course or Band 2? (Tuition fee status) because band 2 is 17,400 pounds. I'd appreciate a quick reply as I'm working out the finances and my acceptance depends upon it. Thanks!
