Re: (SC) 2011/17: Concerning continued humanitarian crimes in SyriaHmm, didn't this fail, as the AG intervened to give a veto for China? Otherwise the GA would never see this.(Original post by thunder_chunky)

Australia hopes the General Assembly will support this resolution to ensure that a clear message is sent to the Syrian regime that the relentless massacre of civilians will go neither unnoticed nor unpunished. Australia urges all nations to vote for the protection of human rights as it is our moral obligation to do.
As detailed in the resolution, we express our gratitude to the Arab League for their contributions, but we are concerned that the full potential of military observers in Syria is not being utilised due to the conditions demanded by the Syrian regime in relation which not only limits the Arab League contribution to a smaller number of observers than requested, but who are also unable to roam freely due to the requirement of Syrian security escorts.Last edited by Darren-M; 07-01-2012 at 23:49. -
Re: (SC) 2011/17: Concerning continued humanitarian crimes in SyriaI have never heard if this AG's privilege before so I have to look into that more. In the meantime I didn't want this postponed any longer so I brought it over to the GA.(Original post by Darren-M)

Also remember that now it goes to the GA even if it fails in the SC as tge GA can veto the SC vote. -

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea believes that the UN should stay out of the conflict, although we fully agree with the aims of the rebels. We (North Korea) believe that what they stand for is right and honourable and support the revolution.

Re: (SC) 2011/17: Concerning continued humanitarian crimes in Syria
Libya supports this resolution and recommends fellow nations join us in recognising the Syrian National Transitional Council as the legitimate government of Syria. On behalf of the Arab League we also thank Australia for commending our efforts in negating violence.

Re: (SC) 2011/17: Concerning continued humanitarian crimes in Syria
It is the opinion of both Argentina and Tanzania that this does not go far enough.
As members of this planets security council you have a responsibility to protect the people of this world from violent oppression.
Both Argentina and Tanzania believe the time for talk is over and call for immediate military intervention in both Sryia and Yemen! -
Re: (SC) 2011/17: Concerning continued humanitarian crimes in Syria
Australia thanks Nigeria, Poland, France, Japan, the United states, Libya and Vietnam for their support.
Our aim with this resolution is not to manufacture change within Syria, but we are however extremely concerned about humanitarian crimes being committed by the regime, and it is this that we aim to end by the referral to the International Criminal Court.(Original post by mevidek)

Australia accepts the concerns of Argentina and Tanzania, yet we hope they will continue to support this resolution. We assure you that our commitment to ending this abuse remains steadfast. We are wary about sending an international force to Syria but have ruled no options out in the long term.(Original post by Rakas21)

We are also worried about the situation in Yemen and are concerned that developments there are being overshadowed by other world events. Our commitment to Yemen is the same as it is to Syria.Last edited by Darren-M; 08-01-2012 at 16:19. -
Re: (SC) 2011/17: Concerning continued humanitarian crimes in SyriaBoth Argentina and Tanzania support this resolution out of principle however if genocide goes unpunished then what is to prevent any other dictators from holding onto power through aggressive means.(Original post by Darren-M)

We and many others in the general assembly are tired of sanctions which are not achieving what is required.
We hope that the SC is indeed considering the prospect of forced regime change in support of the people of Syria (and Yemen). As a member of the African Union (Tanzania) and a non-NATO ally (Argentina) we will support such action such the SC press ahead.
OOC We should have a hype involving the liberation of Syria. OOC -
